Notes: Abstract  The ammine/amine platinum(IV) dicarboxylates have been developed as orally active platinum antitumor agents, and one of these, [PtCl2(NH3)(C6H11NH2) (OCOCH3)2] (JM216), is undergoing clinical trials at present. A synthesis method was developed to radiolabel JM216 with carbon 14 at the carboxylate carbon. The labeling efficiency was 92%, and the purity as shown by high-performance liquid chromathography (HPLC) was 96% after recrystallisation. The radiolabeled JM216 was given orally to BALB/c mice and detailed tissue-distribution data were obtained (blood plasma, kidney, liver, spleen, brain, lung, muscle and skin) for time points of 2 h and 2, 6 and 10 days. Comparison of these data with previously reported data for distribution of platinum obtained by atomic absorption spectroscopy has shown distinct differences, especially for the liver and the kidney. This clearly indicates a difference in behaviour between the labeled ligand and the platinum centre, suggesting detachment of the ligand in vivo.

Notes: Summary The controversial literature reports leave open a question whether apomorphine (APO) and dopamine (DA) share a common receptor? After careful evaluation of the arguments, both for and against, about direct action of APO on DA receptor we propose that rigid molecules like APO holdtrans-cisoid conformation and preferably interact with the pre-synaptic DA receptors while ADTN (2-amino-6,7-dihydroxy, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene) incorporatestrans-transoid conformation and primarily acts on post-synaptic DA receptors. Dopamine, by virtue of its molecular flexibility, can act on both the receptors.

Notes: Summary The potential of utilizing a radio-labelled derivative of the antiviral drug (E)-5-(2-iodovinyl)-2′-deoxyuridine (IVDU) for the specific, non-invasive, in vivo diagnosis of Herpes simplex virus encephalitis (HSVE) was investigated in a rat model of the disease. Following pharmacological disruption of the blood brain barrier radiolabelled IVDU was administered by intra-carotid injection. Brain radioactivity was compared between control and infected animals via gamma camera scintigraphy. After clearance of non-metabolized drug, markedly higher levels of activity were found in infected brain. Post-mortem studies of cryostat sections of brain examined by autoradiography and immunochemical staining showed the radioactivity selectively accumulated in areas of virus infection. These results indicate that radio-labelled derivatives of antiviral drugs may allow the specific neuro-radiological diagnosis of HSVE.

Notes: Summary The extent of natural cross-pollination in Egyptian clover cultivated in Punjab, India, varied from zero to 4.73% in all the three different sowing arrangements. The high out-crossing percentage in the alternate plant (1.57%) and the concentric circle arrangement (1.6%) was due to the close proximity of the pollen source and the abundant pollen supply.

Notes: Summary Inheritance of grain threshability was studied in a cross between two indica rice varieties. Hard threshability was found to be completely dominant over easy threshability. The segregation pattern indicated threshability to be monogenically controlled.

Notes: Summary The average cross-pollination in Egyptian clover under caged and uncaged conditions was 0.51% and 1.44% respectively. The low percentage of cross-pollination under caged conditions was due to the absence of honey bees, calm atmosphere and reduced photosynthesis whereas higher outcrossing under uncaged conditions was both by wind and honey bees activities. Per cent seed set was higher under uncaged conditions (53.0%) compared with that of seeds set under caged conditions (26.3%) and uncaged + hand tripping (52.3%). The honey bees have been found to increase seed set in Egyptian clover by tripping mechanism.

Notes: Summary Selective uptake of the cerebral blood-flow imaging agent99mTc-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HM-PAO) by Human Herpesvirus 1 (HSV-1) infected cells was investigated in vivo and in vitro. No specific uptake of HM-PAO was observed either in encephalitic rats (by brain scintigraphic imaging or by immunoperoxidase staining/autoradiography of brain sections) or in HSV-1 infected Vero cells.
