Notes: Summary Using a monoclonal antibody specific for human tenascin (TN), 180 intracranial growths were immunohistochemically studied. In 69 cases of meningioma, neoplastic cells were negative, with some positivity being observed only in the perivascular and the supporting stroma, especially in anaplastic meningiomas. In 57 cases of glioma different degrees of reactivity occurred in both the cellular conglomerates and the stromal components of the tumours. A higher variability in reactivity was observed in anaplastic astrocytomas and glioblastomas. The most constant finding of the study was the staining of the stroma, which was observed in all types of growths, including metastasis, abscess and tuberculoma. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that tenascin is a stromal marker rather than a true marker of malignant tumours. The heterogeneous distribution of TN in anaplastic gliomas may be a factor in the variable response to treatment with radiolabelled anti-TN monoclonal antibodies.

Notes: Summary ¶ Fibronectins (FNs), adhesive glycoproteins mainly expressed in the extracellular matrix, are polymorphic molecules whose various isoforms are dependent on alternative splicing patterns. The isoform containing the ED-B sequence and occurring in foetal and neoplastic tissues (oncofoetal or B+FN) has been previously recognized as a marker for angiogenesis. The distribution of this isoform was analyzed in a consecutive series of 134 surgically obtained intracranial meningiomas, using specific monoclonal antibodies. Oncofoetal FN was found to be widely distributed in the vessels of anaplastic meningiomas, with its expression being restricted in the vasculature of the typical subtypes, and absent in the neighbouring cerebral tissue. The ubiquitous vascular expression of B+FN in meningiomatous malignancies might provide a potential target for the in vivo delivery of angiosuppressive agents.

Notes: Summary a.c. susceptibility measurements on a YBCO single crystal in an extended range of frequency and applied magnetic fields are presented. The dissipation phenomena shown by these measurements are interpreted inside the framework of the thermally activated flux motion theory developed for low-temperature superconductors in early '60. For this purpose the continuity equation for the magnetic field inside the sample is solved numerically, avoiding to usea priori the standard approximations of this theory: thermally activated flux creep and thermally assisted flux flow. The whole set of a.c. susceptibility measurements, performed in a wide range of the parameters, can be fitted with good agreement between the experimental and theoretical data.

Notes: Summary Two procedures of partial melting of bulk NdBa2Cu3O7−δ, in air and in reduced oxygen pressure, were developed. When the treatment was carried out in air, poor superconducting properties were observed. On the contrary, when the treatment was carried inP O 2=1.3 mbar, good properties were obtained, withT conset=93 K and 100% shielding at lower temperatures. Near full density (2.5×2.5×28) mm3 Nd1.07Ba1.89Cu3.04O7−δ bars, with domains extending in the mm size range, were obtained.

Notes: Summary We discuss the resistivity, the Hall, the Seebeck and the Nerst effect in the mixed state taking the motion of Abrikosov and Josephson vortices into account. Measurements on a Bi(2223) tape point out how the contribution of Josephson vortices to the resistivity prevails at low temperatures while the thermomagnetic effects are, in a first approximation, due to the motion of Abrikosov vortices.

Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Abbiamo eseguito misure di effetto Hall quantistico su MOSFET commerciali di bassa mobilità a canalen.
Notes: Summary We have performed quantum Hall effect measurements on commercial low-mobilityn-channel MOSFETs. The channel resistancevs. electron concentration has the expected oscillating behaviour and gives the quantized values for the Hall resistance, at least in the region of higher mobility. One class of the tested samples gave a surprising behaviour, both in QHE and in field effect mobility measurements: this is thought to be due to uncontrolled differences in the diffusion zones at the interface between the channel and the contacts. In particular, we attribute the deformation of the QHE curves to the onset of a thermoelectromotive force which is present in the electron gas even if the sample is isothermal. A clear evidence for thermoelectric effects is given by measurements made on a high-quality Hall geometry MOSFET.

Notes: An improved ac method to measure the thermal diffusivity in an extended temperature range is presented. The basic idea is to solder thermocouple wires directly on the sample, so that the sample itself acts as a thermocouple junction and the relaxation time for the temperature measurement becomes negligible. This new technique allows one to measure smaller samples and to increase the frequency of measurement so that the thermal losses could in principle be completely neglected. Finally, by the particular geometry a concurrent measurement of the electrical resistivity is obtained.

Notes: This paper describes an apparatus to measure the thermal diffusivity of high temperature superconductors in an extended range of temperature (10–300 K) and magnetic field (up to 8 T). Heat losses are taken into account by adopting an ac technique. Effects introduced by power dissipated on the heater and thermal contacts between thermocouples and sample are considered. In fact the presence of a thermocouple relaxation time not negligible in respect to the sample relaxation time causes an error in the thermal diffusivity evaluation (up to 13% in a sample with poor thermal contact). We have estimated that, also at the higher temperatures, frequencies over 0.03 Hz keep the thermal losses low enough; in this case the poor thermal contact of the thermocouples can be a major problem. All of the experiment is computer controlled. The accuracy of the measurement, mainly determined by evaluation of the sample length, is 10%, while the sensitivity to the relative variations is much higher (0.1%).
