Notes: Summary To determine the role of growth hormone in overnight insulin requirements and lipolysis, five patients with chronic growth hormone deficiency and Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus and six control patients with diabetes were each studied on two separate nights. Insulin was infused at a variable rate throughout one night to maintain euglycaemia and fixed at 04.00 hours on another. During the variable infusion, euglycaemia was maintained in control patients by a 36% increase in insulin infusion rate between 03.00 and 08.00 hours while a 46% decrease in the rate was required in growth hormone deficient patients (p〈0.02). Despite this difference, mean free insulin values were equivalent. This finding is suggestive of increased insulin clearance in growth hormone sufficient patients. Glucose levels rose in control and fell in growth hormone deficient patients when insulin infusion rates were fixed at 04.00 hours. Glycerol production and non-esterified fatty acid concentrations were significantly lower in the growth hormone deficient diabetic patients, p〈0.001, and when normalized with a heparin infusion, had no effect on insulin requirements. We conclude that: (1) growth hormone contributes to the development of the “dawn phenomenon,” possibly by increasing insulin clearance (2) growth hormone helps sustain nocturnal lipolysis in Type 1 diabetes and (3) non-esterified fatty acids are not involved in the dawn phenomenon.

Notes: Abstract European lobsters, Homarus gammarus (L.), were tracked on an artificial reef in Poole Bay on the south coast of England using an electromagnetic telemetry system which monitored movements between reef units and recorded body movements (pitching and rolling) detected with a tilt switch incorporated into the transmitting tag. Several environmental variables (water temperature, light, hydrostatic pressure, current velocity and direction) were recorded simultaneously by the telemetry system, which was self-contained on the seabed. Movements between units of the artificial reef (excursions outside shelter) were predominantly nocturnal, peaking 1.5 to 3 h after sunset and returning to low levels shortly before dawn. A marked decline in the number of inter-reef unit movements from late summer to winter was related to decreasing water temperature rather than to daytime light level, wave height or tidal range. Activity indicated by the tilt switch was also greater at night, but declined gradually from a peak early in the night to a minimum at around midday, on average, implying a degree of activity within reef units during daylight. As with movements between reef units, activity declined seasonally with decreasing water temperature; in addition, the diel pattern of activity disappeared in winter.

Notes: Abstract Male velvet swimming crabs [Necora puber (L.)] were observed to engage in long and vigorous agonistic interactions to gain possession of a sexually receptive female. The role of agonistic behaviour in male mate competition in this species was examined by investigating the effect of the perceived presence of sexually receptive females on interactions between males. Exposing male crabs to water conditioned by sexually receptive females resulted in prolonged interactions, with a greater incidence of potentially injurious behaviour than interactions between control crabs, exposed only to sea water. Maleconditioned water also resulted in more offensive behaviour, but these interactions were of shorter duration and not significantly different from sea water controls. Agonistic superiority was strongly correlated with contestant relative size when males were exposed to male-conditioned water or sea water, but not when exposed to female-conditioned water. Overall, the results conformed with the general predictions of game theoretic models in relation to the influence of resource value on agonistic behaviour. Crabs were more persistent and probably incurred greater fitness costs in the perceived presence of a sexually receptive female, when interactions may have been resolved on the basis of factors more closely related to actual fighting ability than the relative body sizes of contestants.

Notes: Abstract We examined a Ser-9-Gly polymorphism in the dopamine D3 receptor gene for allelic association with schizophrenia in 133 patients currently treated with clozapine and 109 controls. Allele 1 (Ser-9) was significantly more frequent in the patients (69%) than in the controls (56%) (P = 0.004). The 1-1 genotype was more common (43% vs 30%) and the 2-2 genotype less common (5% vs 18%) in patients than in controls. When the patient group was subdivided on the basis of clinical response to clozapine, using a 20-point improvement in the global assessment scale as cut-off, genotype 1-1 was found to be more frequent among the non-responders (53% vs 36%,P = 0.04). To place our results in the context of previous studies of this polymorphism and schizophrenia, we performed a meta-analysis of all published data including the present sample. The combined analysis shows evidence for a modest association between genotype 1-1 and schizophrenia (odds ratio 1.25, 95% confidence interval 1.05–1:49,P = 0.01). These results suggest that the Ser-9 allele, or a nearby polymorphism in linkage disequilibrium, results in a small increase in susceptibility to schizophrenia.

Notes: Summary The majority of cells in the dorsal nucleus of the lateral geniculate body (LGNd) in the cat have two receptive fields: one for each eye. Of the cells tested for binocularity (113), only 21 (18%) were purely monocular. The remainder had receptive fields for the non-dominant eye, the great majority of which (81 or 88%) were purely inhibitory and only 11 (12%) were excitatory. Cells with receptive fields for the non-dominant eye were found in all three laminae (A, A1 and B) of the LGNd. The proportion of inhibitory receptive fields for the non-dominant eye was slightly greater when the dominant eye was ipsilateral (77%) than when it was contralateral (68%). The distribution of the binocular receptive field pairs about points of exact correspondence in the visual field had a standard deviation of about 0.9° in both horizontal and vertical directions. The properties of the inhibitory receptive fields were studied with moving slits of light and stationary flashing spots. Most of the fields were purely inhibitory and varied in size from 1.5° to 6° across. There were no specific stimulus requirements other than a change in contrast within the receptive field. The inhibitory effect was usually fairly weak, the spontaneous discharge of the neuron being inhibited much more readily than the driven discharge. The latency of the inhibition to a stationary flashing spot was about 50 msec, the inhibition was maximal about 20 msec after the onset and lasted up to about 400 msec. Binocular inhibition is not mediated by a corticogeniculate pathway from the visual areas since it survives removal of areas 17, 18 and 19 and the middle suprasylvian gyrus. It was concluded that the most likely mechanism was via interneurons whose axons cross the borders from one cell layer to another.
