Notes: We have investigated the electronic structure of ordered Fe3Pt(001) by using spin- and angle-dependent photoemission with synchrotron radiation. The features in the spin-resolved energy distribution curves (SREDC's) can be understood in terms of the recent band-structure calculations for Fe3Pt. We have observed temperature-dependent changes in the EDC's which reveal some analogy to the 2γ-state model of Weiss. In our spin- and angle-resolved photoemission study of epitaxially grown ultrathin films of fcc Fe we observe major differences in its magnetic properties, depending on whether these films are grown on Cu(001) or on Cu3Au(001), i.e., substrates with small or large lattice constants.

Notes: Abstract Activation energies for two superplastic alloys (Zn78-AI22 and Cu60-Zn4O) and their individual phases have been determined by plottingH/E againstT m/T and utilizing the relationshipH/E = G′ exp (Q/nRT). Hot hardness measurements were made with a microhardness tester and Young's modulus values were obtained over the appropriate temperature range using the Rayleigh vibration technique. The activation energies obtained are compared, wherever possible, with those reported in the literature and are found to be in reasonably good agreement. These data help in the understanding of the mechanisms of superplasticity in these alloys.

Notes: Abstract The electronic structure of the (001) surfaces of Ag and two Ag−Mn alloys (5 and 10 at.% Mn) was studied using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with unpolarised HeI, NeI and ArI radiations. Compared to pure Ag, the alloy spectra are found to be broadened and the main features slightly (0.1 eV) shifted to higher binding energy as a result of adding Mn into Ag. In addition, there is an increase in intensity between Fermi level and top of the Ag 4d-band and significant changes in thed-band region. However, a well-defined Mn spin-up feature clearly separated from the top of Ag 4d-band is not seen in the alloy photoemission spectra. It is suggested that this is due to the strong hybridisation between the Mnd-states and Agd- andsp-states. Our results do not support the virtual bound state model for Mn in Ag for concentration range≧5 at.% Mn.

Notes: Abstract The electronic structure of the (001) face of ordered Cu3Au was studied using synchrotron radiation at BESSY, in the photon energy range 22–80 eV. The Cu 3d-derived bands in Cu3Au look like the foldedd-bands of fcc Cu metal. Three Au 5d-derived bands were observed at 5.0, 6.1 and 7.0 eV below the Fermi level, which showed no dispersion with change in photon energy. The Cu 3d- and the Au 5d-derived bands are found to be separated in energy. We have calculated self-consistent energy bands along the (001) direction using the fully relativistic LMTO method. Comparison of these bands with those experimentally determined shows good agreement. From the calculated bands along Γ−X the direction dependent densities of states were determined, which give a consistent account for the non-dispersive Au-bands.

Notes: Abstract. A population of ventral neural tube cells has recently been shown to migrate out of the hind brain neural tube via the vagus nerve and contribute to the developing gastrointestinal tract. Since liver is also innervated by the vagus nerve, we sought to determine if these cells also migrate into the liver. Ventral neural tube cells in the caudal hindbrain of chick embryos were tagged with a replication-deficient retroviral vector containing the LacZ gene on embryonic day 2. Embryos were processed for detection of labeled cells on embryonic day 5 and 11. Labeled cells were seen in the liver on both days and identified as hepatocytes. Previously, it was believed that all hepatocytes develop from the gut endoderm. Results of the present study show an additional source for the formation of liver cells.

Notes: Abstract Microduplex 60/40 brass and Zn-AI eutectoid were used as models to represent cavitating and non-cavitating classes of the two superplastic alloys, respectively. In addition, a series of alloys were produced to represent the individual phases, over a wide range of temperatures, in these model systems. Hardness, Young's modulus and tensile tests were carried out on all these alloys at temperatures between 20 and 700° C. Analysing the above data, a criterion for the occurrence of cavitation in two-phase superplastic alloys is proposed.[/p]

Notes: Abstract The hardness of the individual phases of the 60/40 brass have been measured in situ over the temperature range 20 to 700° C. Activation energy values for the alloy and its phases were determined from the hot hardness data. Such data are utilized to understand the occurrence of cavitation during superplastic deformation of this alloy. It is also suggested how cavitation may be minimized by lowering the deformation temperature to 250° C where the alloy still exhibits large elongations.

Notes: Adult guinea pigs were carefully standardized for at least seven days prior to each experiment; this included an artificial light-dark cycle with light extending from 0600 to 1800. On three experimental days, eight animals were injected subcutaneously with 300 μg of histamine at six-hour intervals over a 24-hour period; each animal received four injections during one day. The size of the erythema produced each time was measured. In all three experiments a prominent group rhythm was demonstrated with maximum response occurring during the dark phase; minimum response always occurred during the latter part of the light phase. Such results indicate a strong synchronization among the animals of the group. Two additional, similar studies were performed on animals standardized in one case for 21 days and in the second for 35 days under continuous illumination. The group rhythms of histamine response under these conditions, when compared to the light-dark adapted group rhythm, were greatly modified in phasing and profile. The circadian rhythm in response to histamine persisted in each individual animal. The change in the phasing and profile of the group rhythm was due to a partial desynchronization among the individual animals subjected to continuous illumination.

Notes: Summary The origin of skeletal muscle cells in avian iris muscle was investigated by quantitative analysis of heterochromatin profiles at the electron-microscopic level in irides of six types of quail-duck chimeras. Each of the following tissues was transplanted into the head region from quail to duck between stages 9 and 10: cranial neural crest; trunk neural crest; midbrain and adjacent mesoderm; forebrain; forebrain without neural crest; and forebrain without neural crest and mesoderm. The average ratio of heterochromatin profile to nucleus profile in iris skeletal muscle cells was high (quail type) in the dorsal iris, but low (duck type) in the ventral iris of the chimeras resulting from isotopic transplantation of cranial neural crest. Heterotopic transplantation of trunk neural crest to cranial position resulted in failure of development of skeletal muscle cells in the dorsal iris, but not in the appearance of skeletal muscle cells in the ventral iris. The average ratio of heterochromatin profile to nucleus profile in iris skeletal muscle cells was high in the chimeras resulting from transplantation of midbrain region and the chimeras resulting from transplantation of forebrain region, intermediate in the chimeras resulting from transplantation of forebrain region without neural crest, and low in the chimeras resulting from transplantation of forebrain region without neural crest and mesoderm. These results indicate that the skeletal muscle cells in the dorsal iris are of cranial neural crest origin while those in the ventral iris are not, and could possibly arise from cranial mesoderm.
