Notes: The thermal expansion, specific heat, dielectric constant, and resistivity of the novel organic nonlinear crystal, L-arginine phosphate monohydrate have been measured as a function of temperature. The thermal expansion is highly anisotropic and has been interpreted on the basis of crystal structure. The dielectric constant and resistivity exhibit a temperature dependence that is similar to that of an ionic crystal. No anomalies are observed in these physical properties from the liquid nitrogen temperature up to its melting point.

Notes: Dielectric properties of potassium titanyl phosphate have been investigated as a function of thickness and frequency, as well as annealing treatment under various atmospheres. The low frequency dielectric constant of KTP crystals is shown to depend upon the sample thickness, and this feature is attributed to the existence of surface layers. The frequency-dependent dielectric response of KTP exhibits a non-Debye type relaxation, with a distribution of relaxation times. The dielectric behavior of KTP samples annealed in various atmospheres shows that the low frequency dielectric constant is influenced by the contribution from the space charge layers. Prolonged annealing of the samples leads to a surface degradation, resulting in the formation of a surface layer of lower dielectric constant. This surface degradation is least when annealed in the presence of dry oxygen. From the analysis of the dielectric data using complex electric modulus, αm has been evaluated for the virgin and annealed samples. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Grey tracks produced in KTiOPO4 (KTP) by applying a dc electric field have been studied through optical absorption, Raman scattering, and synchrotron x-ray topography. A study of the optical absorption and Raman scattering from the grey-tracked region suggests that their formation is accompanied by changes in the electronic levels of Ti4+. There is no evidence for a major structural change or disorder in the grey-tracked region. However, the x-ray topographs do indicate the presence of a remnant strain in the lattice, which might contribute to the observed changes in the Raman intensities. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Forensische Anwendungen von DNA-Befunden erfordern die Bestimmung der Häufigkeiten aller beobachteten Allele.
Notes: Summary Forensic applications of DNA typing data require the estimation of the frequencies of all observed alleles, which is currently done by a fixed set of groupings (binning) of alleles in a database. Recently it's validity has been questioned on the ground that when a DNA fragment size is close to a bin boundary, the frequencies of all adjacent bins should be added. On the contrary, the current forensic database indicates that when the match window of a DNA fragment overlaps 2 bins, it is enough to consider the bin with the larger frequency, and thisnever underestimates the frequency within the match interval with the current choice of fixed-bin widths. On average, the current fixed-bin procedure yields an allele frequency at least 2-fold higher than that of a floating-bin.

Notes: Abstract Semicarbazide hydrochloride (SEM.HCl) was reported to be a prototype of another possible family of ferroelectrics [Appl. Phys. Lett. 20, 49 (1972)]. The present dielectric, resistivity, thermal and infrared absorption studies carried out on SEM.HCl and SEM.HBr do not confirm this suggestion. However these studies reveal that some observable changes do occur in the thermal amplitude of the molecular cation with the lowering of temperature.

Notes: Summary The simple mating designs provide unbiased estimates for genetic components of variance (additive genetic variance and dominance variance) under the assumption of no epistatic effect. There is empirical evidence, however, that suggests the existence of epistatic gene effects. The triallel and double cross mating designs permit the estimation of epistatic gene effects. A systematic and mathematical approach is suggested for the estimation of variance components based on the alternate model for triallel mating design.

Notes: Vibrational spectra of zinc tris(thiourea) sulphate (ZTS), a new semiorganic non-linear optical crystal, were recorded to determine the symmetries of molecular vibrations. The observed Raman and infrared bands are assigned to molecular vibrations of thiourea, sulphate groups and Zn(thiourea)3SO4 tetrahedra. The Raman spectra are interpreted in the light of crystal structure data. Modifications in the IR spectra of thiourea due to metal complexations are discussed.

Notes: L-Arginine phosphate monohydrate (LAP) is a recently discovered organic non-linear crystal which has the potential to replace a conventional crystal such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate. The polarized Raman and infrared spectra of a single crystal of LAP have been recorded to determine the symmetries of the molecular vibrations. The lattice lines are fairly strong compared with the others and show pronounced intensity variations with the orientation of the crystal. The high-frequency lines are assigned to the vibrations of the various molecular groups such as NH3+, NH2+, NH2, CH2, CH, COO-, H2O and H2PO4- present in the crystal.
