Notizen: Summary A strong effect of monomer structure on molecular weight is found in the radiation initiated cationic polymerization of para substituted styrene derivatives. This effect is proposed to result from steric hindrance in the chain transfer reaction. The conclusion is reached that the predominant chain transfer reaction under the conditions employed is attack by the cation on the monomer aromatic ring rather than by intramolecular attack on the penultimate aromatic ring of the propagating chain.

Notizen: The free cationic copolymerization behavior of styrene derivatives in methylene dichloride solution was examined. The copolymerization behavior of all monomer pairs was found to be strongly ideal. The relationships between reactivity ratios of the monomer pairs can be accurately correlated by a number of simple models. Hammett plots give very similar values for reaction constants for the different cations, and the copolymerization behavior can also be correlated by a generalized Hammett relation using an overall reaction constant. This suggests that under the particular reaction conditions of this work, the cations do not differ greatly in their absolute reactivity. This idea is briefly discussed in light of other work that has been done concerning the nature of the propagating cations in the polymerization of styrene derivatives.

Notizen: A method of analysis of copolymerization systems involving multiple reaction pathways is presented. The method involves fractionation and separate analysis of the individual product populations comprising each sample. Modification of the Kelen-Tüdos linearization techniques into the form necessary to deal with high conversion copolymerizations involving multiple reaction pathways is presented. The method is applied to the ionizing radiation initiated copolymerization of styrene derivatives in dichloromethane, in which case simultaneous copolymerization via cationic and free radical mechanisms is found to occur. Reactivity ratios corresponding to each mechanism are calculated and discussed.

Notizen: The influence of reaction medium polarity on the ionizing radiation-initiated copolymer-ization of styrene derivatives involving unpaired carbocations is examined. In the copo-lymerization of nonpolar monomers such as p-CH3styrene/styrene, a small effect consistent with that predicted by Laidler-Eyring theory is found. In the copolymerization of nonpolar/polar monomer pairs such as p-CH3styrene/p-Clstyrene and styrene/p-Clstyrene, any such effect is masked by specific solvation phenomena. A competition between such phenomena appears to exist, in which the different cations are dominated by different interactions. The p-Clstyryl cation appears to undergo strong intramolecular complexation with the penultimate aromatic ring in nonpolar conditions; thus, this cation displays increased se-lectivity toward monomers best able to disrupt the complex. The p-CH3styryl and styryl cations do not appear to be subject to such strong complexation; thus, in nonpolar solvent, their selectivity tends towards monomers with the highest cation-solvating ability. The differing copolymerization behavior of the p-Clstyryl cation is consistent with the findings of previous investigations of the effect of reaction medium on chain transfer with these monomers. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: The present state of knowledge of the manner in which small molecules dissolve and diffuse in plastic materials is briefly described. The advantages and disadvantages of these phenomena are outlined. Two aspects, one positive and one negative, are reviewed in more detail. The use of plastic materials as barriers to gas and vapor transport particularly in packaging applications is described and illustrated by examples. Typical permeability values for water vapor, oxygen and carbon dioxide in various polymer films are given. Values for hydrogen and helium are included to illustrate the possible use of plastic films for gas separations. On the negative side, the migration of residual monomers and other, possibly toxic, substances out of plastic materials can be a serious problem. Some of the basic considerations and practical solutions to the migration problem are discussed in more detail.
