13C NMR Spectroscopy of Norbornane Derivatives, II: The Influence of Homoconjugative Interactions on the Carbonyl Chemical Shifts in NorbornanonesThe 13C-NMR chemical shifts of several norbornanone derivatives with exo- or endo-cyclopropane rings, endo-cyclobutane rings, and/or double bonds are reported. The effects of cross conjugation of the carbonyl group with a double bond results in a significant upfield shift of the signals of C-7 (large) and of the olefinic carbon atoms (small). In this regard the carbonyl compounds are closely related to nonclassical 7-norbornyl cations. The 13CO shifts are discussed in relation to other molecular properties: rates of solvolysis of 7-substituted norbornane derivatives, decarbonylation rates, n,π* excitation energies, and photoelectron spectra.
Notes:
