Summary Patients suffering from neurocirculatory asthenia frequently exert circulatory syptoms similar to those caused by a hyperthyroid condition. In the present study various circulatory parameters were measured by means of a bicycle ergometer in a group of 20 patients with a clinically asymptomatic (following treatment) hyperthyroid condition (=group A), and a group of 20 patients with neurocirculatory asthenia (=group B). 20 healthy persons served as controls (=group C). All patients and controls were females at the age of 40. Blood pressure, heart rate and ECG were continously registered while the subjects were at rest, during and after physical exercise. Analyses of the results revealed a statistically significant hypertensive reaction during exercise in group A with delayed B.P.-normalisation after exercise when compared with group B and C. In the subjects of group B a moderate increase of the diastolic pressure was seen during exercise followed by a prompt return to normal in contrast to the behavior of the systolic pressure approaching at-rest values was found to be greatly delayed after exercise in group A, while the pulse rate in group B showed a pattern similar to group C. No significant changes emerged comparing the electrocardiographs of groups A and B with those of group C. It is concluded that the circulatory functions, of patients with neurocirculatory asthenia and of patients with clinically asymptomatic hyperthyroidism correlate to some extent.
Notes:
