Notes: We report on the clinical and pathologic findings in 17 cases of endometrial carcinoma in Japanese women aged 40 years or younger. Age of the patients ranged from 16 to 40 years, with a median of 35 years. Nine of 17 tumors (52.9%) were stage I or II (FIGO 1988) but 8 (47.1%) were stage III. Four of the 8 patients with stage III disease had pelvic lymph node metastases and one also had para-aortic lymph node metastasis. One patient had metastasis to the ovary and peritoneal cytology was positive in 4 patients. Histologically, 13 of these 17 patients had endometrioid adenocarcinoma, 3 had adenoacanthoma and 1 had an undifferentiated carcinoma. Ten were well differentiated tumors (G1), 3 were moderately differentiated tumors (G2), and 4 were poorly differentiated tumors (G3). Nine of 17 (52.9%) showed deep myometrial invasion (more than a half of the myometrium) and 5 of 17 (29.4%) demonstrated lymphatic/vascular space invasion. Pelvic and para-aortic lymph node metastases were seen in 4 of 15 (26.7%) and 1 of 15 (6.7%), respectively. Two of these 17 patients died of disease in a relatively short follow-up period. In our experience there is no difference in the survival rates between patients aged 40 years or younger and those over 40 years.

Notes: We have deposited a silicon oxide (SiOx) film with a high optical transmittance in the DUV region by a focused ion beam induced deposition technique using a gallium ion beam and a mixture of oxygen and TMCTS(1,3,5,7-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane) as a source gas. The optical transmittance of a 0.3 μm thick film is higher than 90% at the wavelength of 250 nm. The transmittance of the deposited SiOx film depends on both the source gas and ion beam irradiation conditions. A scaling to explain the transmittance along with the ion beam conditions is proposed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Aims : To characterize a series of colorectal polyps, focusing on the clinicopathological features of serrated adenoma (SA), mixed polyp (MP) and the recently recognized sessile serrated adenoma (SSA).Methods and results : Eight hundred and ninety-one conventional adenomas (AD), 298 hyperplastic polyps (HP), 27 SSA, 10 MP and 24 traditional SA were obtained from patients during colonoscopic examination. SSA were more likely to be proximally located than other polyps. All SA, MP and SSA and a randomly selected subset of HP (n = 61) and ADs (n = 93) were assessed for expression of mucin, MLH1, MGMT, and Ki67. SSA expressed more MUC5AC than either HP or SA. Loss of MLH1 was not observed in any serrated polyps and in only one AD. Loss of MGMT occurred in 13% of AD, and showed no correlation with histological type, size or location. Loss of MGMT occurred in 24% of SSA, MP and SA (combined), and was more frequent in proximal lesions and larger lesions. SSA had a higher proliferative index than HP. In MP, the proliferative index of the non-dysplastic component was closer to HP than SSA, while the dysplastic component was intermediate between SA and AD.Conclusions : SSA differ from other serrated polyps of colorectum in terms of location, morphology and immunophenotype.

Notes: The performance of two different EM techniques applied for the detection of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) in oral hairy leukoplakia (HL) was assessed, i.e. the conventional two-step method of negative staining (CNS) and negative staining after Airfuge enrichment (ANS). Scrape specimens from the lateral borders of tongue of 66 HIV-positive patients with or without HL, of 3 patients with infectious mononucleosis and of 10 HIV-negative patients were evaluated. While CNS resulted in virus detection only in 25% of clinically diagnosed HL cases, EBV was detected by ANS in 85% of clinically suspected cases of HL. Scrape specimens of individuals negative for HIV were negative in EM while 2 of 3 mononucleosis patients were positive without clinical evidence for HL. Due to this high sensitivity the method of negative staining after Airfuge enrichment appears to be useful in the diagnosis of HL. The finding of EBV in clinically normal oral mucosa in HIV-seropositive individuals is interesting and indicates that EBV expression may precede the clinical appearance of HL.

Notes: Three cases of Warthin's tumors were studied with a scanning electron microscope. The free surface of the epithelium was composed mainly of round or ovoid dome-like structures bearing microvilli and apocrine protrusions. Ciliated epithelial cells were detected in 2 of the tumors. The tumor epithelium encircled various amounts of cellular debris resembling degenerate lymphoid cells. A few tiny cystic spaces were also found. Within the lymphoid stroma, tightly packed lymphocytes, a meshwork of reticulum cells and medullary cord-like structures were observed. Our findings support the concept that Warthin's tumors develop from heterotopic salivary gland ducts within pre-existing lymph nodes.

Notes: : Approximately 10% of total muscle collagen in 6 decapod molluskan species was recovered as minor collagenous fractions by limited pepsin digestion and differential salt precipitation. The main alpha components (α1) in these fractions showed similar peptide maps of V-8 protease and lysyl endopeptidase digests to each other and had reactivity to the antiserum against the al component of the minor collagen (named Type SQ-II) from Todarodes pacificus muscle in immunoblot analysis. These results suggested that the minor molecular species of collagen corresponding to Type SQ-II of Todarodes pacificus was widely distributed in the mantle muscle of decapod mollusks. In addition, immunohistochemical experiments revealed that Type SQ-II collagen distributed mainly in intramuscular thin connective tissue (endomysium), suggesting the functional importance of this molecule to the development of meat texture of decapod mollusks.

Notes: Secretory carcinoma of the breast: a tumour analogous to salivary gland acinic cell carcinoma? Aims: Acinic cell-like breast carcinoma is a newly recognized entity, and few acinic cell-like breast carcinoma cases have been reported. All reported acinic cell-like breast carcinomas were counterparts of the solid type of acinic cell carcinoma of the salivary gland. We report here three cases of secretory breast carcinoma with acinic cell differentiation, and discuss the similarity between secretory breast carcinoma and acinic cell carcinoma of the salivary gland. Methods and results: The cases were histologically identical to acinic cell carcinoma of the salivary gland: papillary-cystic type in case 1, a mixture of papillary-cystic, microcystic and follicular type in case 2, and microfollicular type in case 3. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells were positive for salivary-type amylase, lysozyme, S100 protein and α1-antitrypsin, and negative or less reactive for gross cystic disease fluid protein-15 and oestrogen receptor. All three cases did not reveal metastasis or recurrence. Conclusions: These cases were typical of secretory breast carcinoma, and were clinically, histologically and immunohistochemically analogous to acinic cell carcinoma of the salivary gland. We emphasize that secretory breast carcinoma and acinic cell carcinoma of the salivary gland may be identical lesions.
