Description / Table of Contents: Metalation of a Non-activated Alkyl Group in Nickel ComplexesThe diazadiene (DAD)glyoxalbis(diisopropylmethylimine) (1) reacts with anhydrous nickel bromide to yield (DAD)NiBr2 (2). Its reactions with main group metal alkyls lead to rather unstable intermediates. With the bulky O-tolylmagnesium bromide -under formal HBr abstraction- metalation of the diisopropylmethyl substituent occurs in γ-position to the next activating center (N) with formation of an N—C chelate. Properties and structure of this product 3 from this novel alkane activation reaction are discussed.

Notes: Belt-Shaped Molecules by a Repetitive Synthetic StrategyBelt-shaped molecules of the general type 2 containing up to five benzene ring units (cf. 37) have been synthesized by macrocyclisation reactions of ribbon-shaped precursors. An intermolecular cyclization step generates the macroheterocycles 38 and 40. The fourfold-bridged cyclophane 36 are prepared by intra-and intermolecular cyclization reactions. The X-ray structure analyses of 14, 16, 22, 23, 28, and 36 show S-shaped conformations of the molecules.

Notes: In rat pancreatic islet membranes exposed to [α-32P]NAD, cholera toxin stimulated the labelling of three peptides with Mr close to 22000, 42000 and 48000, respectively. In the islets, the toxin-stimulated ADP-ribosylation of the heavy form of the Ns α-subunit predominated over that of the light from, in mirror image of the situation found in the exocrine pancreas. When intact islets were preincubated with cholera toxin, the adenylate cyclase activity of a subcellular particulate fraction was increased. The responsiveness of adenylate cyclase to GTP was also augmented, but that to NaF was decreased. In intact islets, the production of cyclic AMP and the glucose-stimulated release of insulin were also enhanced after pretreatment with cholera toxin. These findings reveal the presence in pancreatic islets of the guanyl nucleotide regulatory protein of adenylate cyclase, with an unusual predominance of the heavy from of the Ns α-subunit.
