Summary Cochineal tincture is recommended for the detection of molybdenum. The reaction being carried out atph = 5,7−6,2, molybdenum gives a fiery-red fluorescence. The reaction is very sensitive; it may, however, been used to a limited extent, only, owing to the fact that some cations extinguish the fluorescence or mask it by their own fluorescence, under the conditions of the experiments.
