Notes: Summary The photostabilizing effect of a hindered piperidine derivative was studied in the photooxidation of polypropylene films by following the formation of carbonyl and hydroperoxide groups, as well as the change of concentration of the stabilizer. This additive — the tetramethylpiperidine sebacate — proved to be more effective than hydroxybenzophenone, hydroxybenztriazole or a sulphur containing nickel complex, since no oxidation products were formed after irradiation with 20O Mlxh dose. Addition of the piperidine derivative together with hydroxybenztriazole or with the organic nickel complex was less effective than with hydroxybenzophenone. In latter case concentration of both stabilizers under irradiation decreased at a slower rate than in the case of separate application. The effect of Cyasorb UV 531 and Tinuvin 770 was additive and the spontaneous rupture of the samples took place only after a long period of irradiation (∼ 250 Mlxh).

Notes: Abstract We studied the effect of an inert solvent (benzene) on the overall rate of copolymerization in the system styrene/diethylmaleate (ST/DEM), initiated with azo-bis-iso-butyro-nitrile (AIBN) at 50°C. The experimental results can be interpreted on the hot radical theory.

Notes: The effect of a special additive containing stabilizer and sensitizer groups was studied in thermal and photooxidation of polypropylene. In thermooxidation, the induction period of oxygenz absorption decreased, and its rate increased with the increase of the amount of the additive. In photooxidation, however, the shortest induction period and highest rate of carbonyl formation can be achieved at an optimal additive concentration. The final molecular mass of the samples after irradiation till the spontaneous rupture falls in the range of moldecular mass consumable for the microbes. On the basis of the results, it seems to be possible to stabilize the polymer during processing and storage, and sensitize under solar irradiation with the same additive.

Notes: In research on the kinetics of the inhibition of the thermal polymerization of styrene, we came to the conclusion that quinones participate not only in the inhibition reaction but also in the copolymerization. We carried out the derivation of the basic kinetic equations of the process in two ways: (1) Using the usual simplifying assumptions of the theory of copolymerization (Melville-Watson method) and (2) using the stationary state method. The kinetic equations derived by the second method transform under certain conditions to the corresponding equations of simple inhibition, while the equations from the first method lead to contradictions. On the basis of the kinetic analysis it was found that the inhibition period during copolymerization of the inhibitor does not increase linearly within increasing concentration of the inhibitor, and that on the curve of conversion versus time there is an inflection point if the concentration of inhibitor is higher than a certain value. The curve of initial polymerization velocity against concentration of inhibitor has a minimum at a certain concentration (“inhibition optimum”). Experiments carried out with p-benzoquinone at 90, 105, 120, and 135°C. completely agree with what has been stated above. At the lower temperatures, except for a slight shortening of the inhibition period, no significant indications of copolymerization are apparent; the course of these experiments is well described by the equation of simple inhibition. At 120 and 135°C. copolymerization occurs to a marked extent and is well characterized by the equations derived by the second method. Finally, from the temperature dependence of the appropriate velocity constants, we determined the activation energy of the inhibition reaction (4.3 kcal./mol.) and the activation energy of copolymerization of quinone (9.4 kcal./mole).

Notes: Some chemical and mechanical properties of intermediate products obtained in the production of PE heat shrinkable tubes were studied, seeking correlations between the composition and the properties. Different PE granulates were mixed with antioxidant (amine or phenol derivative), flame retardant agent and, for some samples, with elastomer. The compounds were extruded to tubes, which were then crosslinked by electron beam irradiation and subsequently extended to twice the original diameter. In the course of the production phases, the thermooxidative stability decreased compared to that of compounded granulate. The greatest decrease was caused by the irradiation. The aromatic amine seems to be the more effective antioxidant at similar compositions than the phenol derivative and it shows a better resistance against irradiation. The oxidative stability of the finished shrinkable tubes was not affected by the quality of commercial granulate (initial polyethylene).Mechanical properties changed slightly upon ageing, and the introduction of the elastomer did not alter the tensile strength and elongation at break. The remaining stability of the end-product was more than enough to bear the stress of shrinking in use, and the good tensile strength of the material did not decrease upon thermal ageing either.During extrusion of the granulated compound no significant change took place in the distribution and molar mass averages. Irradiation produced more than 50% insoluble fraction, and the thermooxidative properties of the crosslinked sample changed significantly compared to the original PE and to the compound prepared from it.

Notes: A study was made on the AIBN-initiated polymerization of styrene in benzene and dimethyl formamide at 50°C. The overall rate and the rate of initiation of the polymerization were determined and the number-average and weight-average molecular weights of the polymers formed were measured. The decrease in the rate and degree of polymerization with the decrease in styrene concentration was caused by the corresponding decreases in the rate constants of chain propagation and initiation steps. In the systems studied no chain transfer process occurred with an experimentally measurable rate.
