Notes: Abstract  The occurrence of tadpole-type larvae is one of the key events used to understand the origin and evolution of chordates, and the tail bud of chordate embryos is thought to be associated with formation of the tip of the tail. Although some transcriptional factor genes including Brachyury are expressed in the tail bud, no structural genes have been reported to be expressed there. We report here that an ascidian gene HrTT-1 is expressed exclusively in the tip of elongating tail of the tail-bud embryo. This gene encodes a possible secreted protein of 415 amino acids with the SCP/TPX family consensus sequences.

Notes: We have synthesized two types of all-organic radical liquid crystalline (LC) compounds,trans-2-alkoxyphenyl-5-[4-(4-alkoxybenzenecarbonyloxy)phenyl]-2,5-dimethylpyrrolidine-1-oxy(1) and 4-alkoxyphenyl trans-4-[5-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-2,5-dimethylpyrrolidine-1-oxy-2-yl]benzoate(2) and have fully characterized their LC properties. Although the only difference in the molecularstructure between 1 and 2 is the orientation of a binding group connecting the core portion and oneside-chain (-OCO- and -COO- for 1 and 2), the racemic or enantiomerically enriched 2 showed anSmA phase, or SmA* and TGBA* phases, which were not observed for 1, besides N and SmC, or N*and SmC* phases, respectively. Here we discuss the origin of these differences on the basis of theircrystal structures determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis

Notes: Ar/H2 sputtering of a SiO2 target can produce thick silicon oxide films with significantly reduced internal stresses compared with those of conventional films prepared by an Ar/O2 sputtering method. As an origin of the stress reduction, we proposed previously the structural relaxation model of the Si–O–Si network via partial Si–H termination. This model is experimentally supported here by the Raman spectroscopy measurements which show a large decrease of planar three- and four-fold ring-type defects in the hydrogenated Si–O–Si network structure. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The compressive internal stresses of sputtered silicon oxide films are remarkably reduced by use of an Ar/H2 gas mixture instead of the conventional Ar/O2 one. The film deposition rates are also found to be larger than those using an Ar/O2 gas mixture. The effect is thought to be caused mainly by structural relaxation of Si-O-Si network via partial Si-H terminations. The oxygen deficiency in films leads to optical absorption loss at short wavelengths (〈700 nm). However, these films are still suitable as mechanically stable layers of optical devices operating above 700 nm.

Notes: With increasing number of melting-solidification plants for the domestic wastes andincineration ashes, the resulting molten slag is now expected as a recycled aggregate for concrete in Japan, while application examples until now are limited to non-loadbearing pre-cast concrete and concrete secondary products. This study deals with a full-scale application of molten slag recycled fine aggregate. Starting withthe inspection of monthly variations in quality of molten slag fine aggregate in a plant, construction of a full-scale structure was attempted using the recycled aggregate concrete with a superplasticizer. During construction, pumpability of the recycled concrete was examined and the quality of hardened concrete in the structure was evaluated. It was shown that quality variation of the molten slag fine aggregate during eight months was sufficiently small, and pumpability as well as concrete quality in structure showed no significant difference with those of the ordinary concrete

Notes: Abstract: In acute pancreatitis, particularly in severe cases, polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) elastase induces tissue damage in remote organs such as the lung, as well in the pancreas itself. Therefore, we examined the therapeutic effect of a specific synthetic inhibitor of PMN elastase (ONO-5046: Ono Pharmaceuticals, Osaka, Japan) on the lung, liver, and kidney, as well as pancreas, in severe hemorrhagic pancreatitis in dogs. Acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis was induced by the injection of a mixture of autologous bile and porcine trypsin into the main pancreatic duct. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was administered intravenously as a septic challenge. Two animal groups were used. In one group, continuous infusion of ONO-5046 was started prior to the injection of LPS (ONO group). In the other group (control), saline was infused instead. At the end of the experiment (330 min after the injection of bile and trypsin), the pancreas revealed severe hemorrhagic pancreatitis, and a large amount of bloody ascites had accumulated in the peritoneal cavity. The white blood cell count was markedly reduced in response to the induction of pancreatitis, and was decreased further by the septic attack, irrespective of the administration of ONO-5046, although the count increased again in the ONO group. Serum levels of amylase and α2-macroglobulin-trypsin complex increased similarly in both groups following administration of bile and trypsin. Serum Ca levels decreased in both groups. At the end of the experiment, the wet weight of the lung was slightly higher in the control group (without ONO-5046). Microscopically, the pancreas showed severe hemorrhage accompanied by extensive interstitial edema in both groups. The lung and liver demonstrated mild infiltration of inflammatory cells in the interstitium in both groups, although the inflammatory change in the liver was slightly milder in the ONO group. These findings indicate that severe hemorrhagic pancreatitis cannot be alleviated by the administration of a specific inhibitor of PMN elastase alone, although this may lessen damage to remote organs such as the liver and lung. The white blood cell count decreased markedly after the induction of acute pancreatitis, and much more after a septic challenge. This seems to be closely related to the accumulation of bloody ascites in the peritoneal cavity.

Notes: Abstract This report describes a 58-year-old man with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and interstitial pneumonia who suffered from low-grade fever, abdominal pain, and bloody diarrhea 16 months after the diagnosis of RA. Ulcerative colitis (UC) was diagnosed, based on endoscopic and histological findings. RA associated with UC is rare and the underlying mechanism is unknown. We discuss here whether vasculitis and HLA class may play some role in the association of RA with UC.

Notes: The X-ray crystal structure of (±)-[2-[4-(3-ethoxy-2-hydroxypropoxy)phenylcarbamoyl]ethyl]dimethylammonium p-nitrobenzenesulfonate [(±)-NNMe2], which shows the novel enantiomeric resolution phenomenon Preferential Enrichment, has been compared with that of (±)-[2-[4-(3-ethoxy-2-hydroxypropoxy) phenylcarbamoyl]ethyl]dimethylammonium p-toluenesulfonate [(±)-NTMe2], which does not show the phenomenon. The stable crystalline form of (±)-NNMe2 is a racemic compound, while that of (±)-NTMe2 is a mixed (disordered) crystal composed of the two enantiomers. The intermolecular hydrogen bonding mode in the crystal of (±)-NNMe2 was very different from that of (±)-NTMe2. Chirality 10:705-710, 1998. © 1998 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: A new example of a racemate showing unusual enantiomeric resolution phenomenon, in which simple recrystallization of the racemate leads to remarkable enantiomeric enrichment of either enantiomer up to 100% ee in the mother liquor, has been found. This compound is (±)-[2-[4-(3-ethoxy-2-hydroxypropoxy)phenylcarbamoyl]-ethyl]dimethylsulfonium p-nitrobenzenesulfonate [EtOCH2CH(OH)CH2OC6H4NHCOCH2CH2SMe2+O2NC6H4SO3-] [(±)-SN]. By repeating recrystallization of (±)-SN and the resulting deposited crystals successively and collecting the resulting enantiomerically enriched mother liquors with the same chirality sense, highly efficient enantiomeric resolution of the racemate into its separate enantiomers has been accomplished. The relationship between the occurrence of this enantiomeric resolution phenomenon and the crystal properties has been investigated with respect to SN and its aryl- and alkylsulfonate derivatives. The mode of enantiomeric resolution of (±)-SN was similar to that of para-substituted benzenesulfonate derivatives (±)-ST (4-MeC6H4SO3-) and (±)-SC (4-ClC6H4SO3-) previously reported, whereas the unsubstituted derivative (±)-SB (C6H5SO3-) and alkysulfonate derivatives (±)-SO (n-C8H17SO3-) and (±)-SM (CH3SO3-) did not show such an enantiomeric resolution phenomenon. The crystalline form of the former racemates that underwent the enantiomeric resolution was racemic compounds, while the latter were mixed crystals (solid solutions) composed of the respective optical antipodes.
