Notes: Summary After intravenous injection of methylnitrosourea among 48 rabbits in 33 (68.8%) brain tumors were found and in 4 of these cases spinal cord tumors simultaneously. Histologically these neoplasms were glioblastomas and sarcomas mainly. Contrary to rats tumors of nerve roots and of peripheral nerves were not observed. Unlike in rats the induced tumors frequently occured as small intestine carcinomas and as multiple vessel wall sarcomas of different organs. Rabbits are the largest animal species in which of brain tumors were successfully induced by methylnitrosourea. The intravenous injection of methylnitrosourea is the best method for induction of neoplasms of the central nervous system in adult rabbits at this time.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The analysis of neutral organochlorine compounds in fish is described. The method includes extraction, selective clean-up and GC/MS determination using glass capillary columns. The results of a typical fish sample coming from Upper Austrian rivers are presented. In comparison with the detected concentration of 6.1 ppm PCB's relatively low amounts of pesticide residues were found. The degree of chlorination of these PCB's is similar to that of Aroclor 1254, but the isomeric distribution is quite different, indicating varying persistence of the distinct isomers.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe eines Gas-Chromatograph-Massenspektrometer-Computer-Systems wurden polycyclische Aromaten im Ofenruß eines Aluminiumelektrolyseofens analysiert. Der Gehalt an Benz(a)pyren betrug 0,2 %.
Notes: Summary The polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons from the soot of an aluminium electrolysis furmace have been analysed by means of a gas chromatograph — mass spectrometer —computer system. After cyclohexane extraction (Soxhlet extractor) the liquid was directly injected into the chromatograph. Repeated scanning produced several spectra of each peak which could be compared with reference spectra. Out of about 40 separated compounds the carcinogens as well as the components with concentrations exceeding 1 % were identified by relative retention times and mass spectra. Fluoranthene, pyrene, benz(a)anthracene and phenan-threne were found to be the main components. The content of benzo(a)pyrene was 0.2 %.

Notes: Organic compounds adsorbed on fly ash from an incinerator for radioactive waste were investigated. Following Soxhlet extraction and concentration, analysis was performed by GC and GC/MS using high temperature silylated glass capillary columns coated with OV-1 and SE-54. Compound identification was based on retention data, relative detector responses, and mass spectra. Among other polycyclic aromatic compounds, series of gradually chlorinated PAHs containing four to seven aromatic rings were detected. For unequivocal identification, appropriate reference compounds were synthesized by chlorination of the corresponding parent PAHs.
