    Notes: Abstract  The effects of paraquat on rat brain were studied. Activities of complex I (NADH: ubiquinone oxidoreductase) in mitochondrial electron transport system, lipid peroxidation and the amount of catecholamines in rat brain were measured after acute paraquat exposure. Complex I activities were significantly lower and lipid peroxides were higher in the brains of a paraquat-treated group than in those of a control group. Lipid peroxide in rat serum, however, did not increase after paraquat exposure. A study of the time dependency of paraquat effects disclosed that mitochondrial complex I activities in rat brain as well as those in rat lung and liver gradually decreased prior to the appearance of respiratory dysfunction. As compared to controls, the dopamine in rat striatum was significantly lower in the paraquat-treated group. These results suggest that paraquat after crossing the blood-brain barrier might be reduced to the radical in rat brain, which may damage the brain tissue, especially dopaminergic neurons in striatum. We therefore propose that cerebral damage should be taken into consideration on paraquat exposure. Patients may therefore need to be followed up after exposure to high doses of paraquat.

    Notes: Several monolayers (ML) of CdSe were deposited on (001) GaAs surfaces to study the stability of the CdSe films. The CdSe film with the 2 ML thickness showed atomically flat surfaces just after the growth. However, in three days after the growth, self-organization into dots at room temperature was clearly observed. This unexpected self-organization of dots observed at room temperature from the once coherently-grown CdSe film will be closely correlated to the enhancement of the heterointerface diffusion observed in this combination of CdSe and GaAs. This correlation between the stability of the dots and the heterointerface diffusion was examined in the common cation case of ZnSe/ZnS, which is known to show low interface diffusion. Self-organization of ZnSe dots was observed with an atomic force microscope on (001) ZnS surfaces. The ZnSe dots were stable as expected and did not show instability such as observed for the CdSe dots on GaAs or on ZnSe. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary A case of multicentric reticulohistiocytosis in a 60-year-old Japanese woman associated with subclinical Sjögren's syndrome is presented. The clinical features along with the light microscopic studies are commented. Partial improvement of the skin lesions and tendon sheath swelling was achieved after treatment with cyclophosphamide but the patient's general condition remained unchanged. Taking the rarity of multicentric reticulohistiocytosis into account, coexistence of these two conditions in the present and previously reported cases suggests that an autoimmune mechanism may play a part in the pathogenesis of multicentric reticulohistiocytosis.

    Notes: Abstract: A novel three-dimensional (3-D) tomography software has been developed for spherical tokamak (ST) plasmas with thin central coils. It enables us to measure whole 3-D annular profiles of ST plasma emissivity (line spectrum etc.) using limited number of detectors located on a sphere outside of its separatrix. The numbers and positions of detectors have been optimized for STs that contain low-n toroidal modes from n = 1 to 5. Mathematical method allowing for the removal of the thin central coil from the region of reconstruction and to reconstruct STs with single and double axes are also discussed. The shadow effect of center coil region was found to limit the reconstruction accuracy, indicating that the low-aspect ratio torus (ST) is essential to this new 3-D tomography diagnostics.
