    Notes: Summary The spatial pattern of cell production and retinal growth were studied in Xenopus between stage 60 and two months after metamorphosis using 3H-proline and 3H-thymidine autoradiography. The position and the number of the ganglion cells labelled with 3H-thymidine were determined. The area of the unlabelled retina due to growth since 3H-proline administration at stage 60 was measured. Both retinal area measurements and counts of labelled ganglion cells showed 30–40% higher values in the temporal than in the nasal retinal half. The greater cell production and area accretion were even more pronounced between the temporal and the nasal retinal quadrants. The results on the temporoventral crescentic retinal growth rule out the possibility that from midlarval stages onwards the retinal and the tectal growth patterns are matched.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes a flume tank in which the various physical and behavioural conditions encountered by swarming macroplankton can be manipulated, and a mathematical stereophotographic technique, for use in the calculation of the three-dimensional co-ordinates of individual organisms within the swarms. The mathematical model incorporates the Direct-Linear Transformation equation which describes the position of the object and its image in relation to the camera-perspective centre of the photographic system. Combining this equation with a modified light-ray tracement technique to solve for the passage of light through a three-media environment, the actual three-dimensional co-ordinates of the individual organisms and subsequently their inter-individual distances, bearings and angles of elevation may be derived. The distances between adjacent animals can be measured to an accuracy of 0.24 mm (SD=0.21) using this photogrammetric technique. The design of the flume tank allows for the manipulation of water current speed and flow patterns, substrate, and light intensity. Six species of mysid and one species of euphausiid have been induced to swarm in the flume tank. The conditions required to induce swarming and schooling in the laboratory are described. The inter-individual distances, bearings and angles of elevation have been calculated for Paramesopodopsis rufa, Anisomysis mixta australis, Australerythrops paradicei (Crustacea: Mysidacea) and Nyctiphanes australis (Crustacea: Euphausiacea) using the stereophotographic technique.

    Notes: Laryngeal mask assisted blind orotracheal intubation is a technique that is best mastered under controlled circumstances. The influence of the type of tracheal tube, and positioning of the head, on the success rate of this procedure was evaluated in 90 gynaecological patients presenting for elective procedures under general anaesthesia. After induction, a laryngeal mask was introduced and its position was confirmed. Up to three attempts at blind orotracheal intubation using one of three tracheal tubes (Argyle, Portex or Kendall Curity) passed through the laryngeal mask were permitted in each patient. The success rates after a single attempt at blind oral intubation were 3.3%, 70.0% and 30.0% respectively (p 〈 0.001 and p 〈 0.05 when Portex was compared to Argyle and Kendall Curity types). After a maximum of three attempts, success rates were 30.0% (Argyle), 93.3% (Portex) and 76.7% (Kendall Curity). The first attempt at tracheal intubation was performed in the 'sniffing the morning air position‘ and this was successful in 52% of successful intubations; the second attempt using extension at the atlanto-occipital joint was successful in a further 35% of successful intubations; the third attempt used varying degrees of neck flexion and extension at the atlanto-occipital joint and this permitted successful placement of the tracheal tube in the remaining 13% of patients in whom tracheal intubation was possible.

    Notes: Spinal anaesthesia with 5 ml of lignocaine 0.5% was administered to 30 women presenting for day case minor gynaecological surgery. They were allocated at random to receive the anaesthetic via either a 26-gauge Atraucan (pencil point) or a 29-gauge Spinocan (cutting bevel) spinal needle. Onset, duration, spread and regression of sensory and motor blockade, haemodynamic parameters and postoperative complicatons were studies. An upper sensory level of T10 (93.3%) was obtained in all except two patients. No patient complained of discomfort during surgery. The mean onset time was less than 8 min and the mean duration of sensory block was 32.5 min. All patients had complete return of motor power within 1 h and were discharged the same day. Only one patient had a transient episode of hypotension which was easily treated with intravenous fluids. Three were no serious side effects seen postoperatively. We conclude that spinal anaeshtesia with 5 ml of lignocaine 0.5% provides a useful alternative to general anaesthesia for day case minor gynaecological surgery.

    Notes: Undiluted culture filtrates of two commercial products of Trichoderma spp., Trichopel and Trichoflow, and two isolates of Penicillium citrinum completely inhibited the conidial germination of macroconidia of Claviceps africana, the cause of ergot or sugary disease of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) in vitro. Similarly, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia cepacia completely inhibited macroconidial germination, with the former being more effective at high dilutions. In contrast, these bacterial isolates failed to inhibit infection in vivo in glasshouse tests with ergot-inoculated sorghum, but all fungal biocontrol agents (including an isolate of Epicoccum nigrum) reduced the severity of disease (percentage of infected spikelets per panicle), in some cases completely inhibiting the development of ergot. In a second glasshouse trial, optimum control was achieved when the biocontrol agents were applied 3–7 days before inoculation with conidia of C. africana.

    Notes: According to linear interincisal measurements, women have a smaller maximum jaw opening than men. In this study the difference was 2.7%. In contrast, epidemiological surveys indicate that woman have a greater mobility of joints and generally more joint laxity.Covariate analysis was used to test for the difference between sexes in mean maximum passive opening adjusted according to group mean differences in other parameters of body size. The net result was that the values became more equal between sexes.A second method, employing a geometric estimation for the angle of maximum jaw opening, showed that women had a 5.4% wider range of jaw opening than men (P〈0.057). This method avoided the problem of considering relative body size and body factors which generally correlated poorly with maximum opening. It should be noted that an increased range of opening is a measure of hyperextensibility and does not necessarily imply laxity or instability.
