    Notes: Summary We have previously reported that oxygen free radical scavengers protect rat islet cells from damage by cytokines and we interpreted these findings as suggesting the involvement of oxygen free radicals but did not directly measure indices of free radical activity. In this study, we report on malondialdehyde, an end product of lipid peroxidation, in rat islets incubated with cytokines. The individual cytokines, interleukin 1 (1 U/ml), tumour necrosis factor (102 U/ml), and interferon gamma (102 U/ml) inhibited insulin release but did not increase islet malondialdehyde levels. Combination of these cytokines however, produced significant increases in islet malondialdehyde and this was accompanied by islet necrosis. Furthermore, an inhibitor of lipid peroxidation, U78518E, significantly decreased the cytokine-induced increase in islet malondialdehyde and protected islet Beta cells from destruction by the cytokine combination of interleukin 1, tumour necrosis factor and interferon gamma. These findings suggest that the cytotoxic action of cytokines on islet Beta cells may result from free radical production and lipid peroxidation in the islet cells.

    Notes: This article describes a user-controlled detector simulator to aid development of the grazing incidence spectrometer (GIS), which forms part of the coronal diagnostic spectrometer on-board the solar and heliospheric observatory. The simulator was a vital element in carrying out full range tests of the GIS processing electronics in the absence of real detectors, including extreme conditions not easily achievable by other means. With a large degree of flexibility, the simulator provides a wide range of characteristics of output events of realistic shapes. Although the simulator was designed specifically to simulate the spiral anode as used by the GIS, the design is applicable to any three channel detector system and has since been used for the FONEMA instrument for the Russian Mars96 mission. The simulator functionality, performance parameters, software and hardware design, and the overall grounding scheme are presented. The simulator performance with some test results are also discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer is designed to probe the solar atmosphere through the detection of spectral emission lines in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength range 150 – 800 Å. By observing the intensities of selected lines and line profiles, we may derive temperature, density, flow and abundance information for the plasmas in the solar atmosphere. Spatial and temporal resolutions of down to a few arcseconds and seconds, respectively, allow such studies to be made within the fine-scale structure of the solar corona. Futhermore, coverage of large wavelength bands provides the capability for simultaneously observing the properties of plasmas across the wide temperature ranges of the solar atmosphere.

    Notes: Summary The usefulness of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) in elderly individuals has recently been questioned. ESR measurements were obtained on 100 elderly individuals using the Westergren method. In 4% of the patients screened the ESR was responsible for uncovering previously undiagnosed illnesses. Elevated ESR's, while more prevalent in the elderly than in younger individuals, have a similar pathological significance.

    Notes: Abstract A novel test of carbohydrate-mediated adhesion has been developed. At the tips of two syringes, large spherical model membranes have been made from phosphatidylcholine and varying amounts of mixed brain gangliosides dissolved inn-decane. The apposition of two such membranes resulted in adhesion, not fusion, as judged by the absence of fluorescence mixing in the junction with NBD-phosphatidylethanolamine in one membrane and perylene in the other. Adhesion was observed without gangliosides. The rate of formation of the adhesion area (“rate” of adhesion) was unchanged from 0 to 0.8 mol% gangliosides. A slightly lower but constant rate was observed within the physiological range from 2 to 10 mol%. Adhesion was frequently blocked at 11 to 15 mol% gangliosides. The rate of adhesion with pure gangliosides increased with the number of sialic acid residues: GT1〉GD1a〉GM1. These results are interpreted in terms of a sialic acid-dependent segregation of gangliosides into the adhesion zone.

    Notes: Abstract Numerical methods are presented for solution of the complex moving-boundary problem described by a thermal-capillary model for Czochralski crystal growth, which accounts for conduction through melt, crystal, and crucible and radiation between diffuse-gray body surfaces. Transients are included that are caused by energy transport, by changes in the shapes of the melt-crystal, melt-ambient phase boundaries and the moving crystal, and by the batchwise decrease of the melt volume in the crucible. Finite-element discretizations are used to approximate the moving boundaries and the energy equation in each phase. A two-level, implicit integration algorithm is presented for transient calculations. The temperature fields and moving boundaries are advanced in time by a trapezoid rule approximation with modified Newton's iterations to solve algebraic systems for effective ambient temperatures computed with diffuse-gray radiation. The implicit coupling between radiative exchange, interface shapes, and the temperature field is necessary for preserving the second-order accuracy of the integration method and is achieved by successive iterations between the radiation calculation and solution of the thermal capillary model. Analysis of a quasi-steady-state model (QSSM) demonstrates the inherent stability of the CZ process. Including either diffuse-gray radiation among crystal, melt, and crucible or a simple controller for maintaining constant radius can lead to oscillations in the crystal radius. The effects of these oscillations on batchwise crystal growth are addressed.
