Notes: Abstract Stark-effect patterns of neutral and singly ionized Cadmium emitted from an obstructed and constricted glow-discharge have been recorded. For hydrogen-like terms experiments agree with calculations obtained by perturbation theory.

Notes: Summary In an earlier paper [9] it was demonstrated that there are histological differences of placental villi within maternofetal circulation units. Using histochemical and biochemical methods for identification of alcaline phosphatase it can now be demonstrated that those morphological differences also manifest themselves functionally. The histochemical study shows a strikingly lower activity of alcaline phosphatase in the syncytium of the centrally situated placental villi. According to the cellular localisation it can be demonstrated that in the central villi activity is mainly situated in the syncytial brush border whilst in peripheral villi activity is also found in basal region of syncytium. Biochemical investigation reveals the same results; activity is found always lowest in the center of the circulation units. The results can be interpretated in the way that the center of the circulation unit is the region of growth whilst in the peripheral areas main resorption — and exchange functions take place between mother and foetus.
