    Notes: Abstract The time series consisting of nonsinusoidal Natural Remanent Magnetization (NRM) and palaeoclimatic variations for the past two million years have been spectrally examined by using a new Walsh transform technique. The results show statistically significant periodicities (at 95% confidence level) of approximately 92,000 years; 43,000 years and 21,000 years in the ensemble spectra of the NRM intensity (mineralogic) variations. These NRM periodicities are remarkably close to the well-known Milankovitch cycles. The ensemble spectra of palaeoclimatic records reveal only 41,000 years statistically significant (95%) periodicity corresponding to the obliquity cycle. The study suggests that NRM variations in deep sea sediments probably are more sensitive recorders of “palaeoclimatic memory” than the oxygen isotope variations.

    Notes: Abstract The spectral study of the Bouguer anomally map of Central India suggests an uplifted crust-mantle interface under the Mahandi graben. This study has delineated three subsurface levels of anomalous masses at the respective depths of 23 km, 8 km, and 2 km apparently representing the Moho, an intermediate discontinuity in the sialic part of the crust and the basement, respectively. Model study of the Bouguer anomaly along a profile suggests a typical continental graben type subsurface structure with a low density depression in the sialic part of the crust between 8 and 18 km supported by an elevated upper mantle of intermediate density (∼3.4 g/cm3) varying in depth from 25 km to 55 km. The depths of the inferred interfaces in case of Bundelkhand granite are 32 km, 11 km, and 1.5 km, which might represent the Moho, the base of intruded granite massif, and some shallow compositional variation. Similar studies in case of Vindhyan basin have brought out three discontinuities at the respective depths of 16 km, 6–4.5 km, and 2.4 km. The first horizon at the depth of 16 km probably represents the interface between the granitic and the basaltic part of the crust. The 6–4.5 km is the depth of the basement, with the 2.4 km interface separating Bijawar rocks from Vindhyans wherever they are present. A generalized inversion of a profile across a positive belt of Bouguer anomaly representing the subsurface Bijawar rocks support the above result.

    Notes: Abstract —On a short time scale, Atmospheric Angular Momentum (AAM) has been demonstrated to be essentially the sole excitation source of LOD variations. The LOD variation, therefore, merely reflects the AAM variation (LOD as proxy for AAM). The study of the nonlinear nature of AAM variability (e.g., its orbital complexity, dimensionality and extreme sensitivity to the initial conditions) may provide a physical premise for theoretical modelling of the earth-atmosphere-ocean system. Analysis of the high quality of detailed daily LOD/AAM variations time series, spanning the period of 1962–1992, reveals a non-zero and low positive Lyapunov exponent value which suggests possible evidence of deterministic chaos in the underlying dynamics. Application of modern nonlinear prediction techniques capable of distinguishing chaos and random fractals to the data set, further support the above findings and render a predictive time limit of approximately 12–15 days. A low dimensional strange attractor and a low average Lyapunov exponent suggest a low level of unpredictability and stability in the system dynamics. It is argued here that a possible source of the raised entropy in LOD/AAM systems possibly stems from a conceivable nonlinear interaction between the seasonal cycle and inter- or intra-annual fluctuations due to thermodynamics properties of the atmosphere-ocean system.

    Notes: Abstract Chronic dieldrin administration to rats (5 mg/kg/day) produced pathological changes in liver and kidney tissues. Dieldrin treated rats showed high levels of liver ascorbic acid and increased activities of inorganic pyrophosphatase in brain and glucose-6-phosphatase in liver. The activities of Mg2+-ATPase in liver and acetylcholinesterase in brain were decreased under toxic doses of dieldrin. L-Ascorbic acid supplements in treated animals could partially prevent the pathological alterations, as observed histologically in liver and kidney tissues. Administration of this vitamin could also prevent alterations in some enzyme activities produced by toxic dieldrin doses.

    Notes: Abstract. In oral carcinomas close to the mandible, tumour invasion of the mandible is important in selecting segmental or marginal resection. Imaging may play a role in assessing tumour invasion. This study compares the accuracy of panoramic X-ray, CT and MR imaging in assessing invasion of the mandible in 29 patients. At histopathology, 6 patients had mandible erosion, 12 had invasion and 11 had an intact mandible. Magnetic resonance imaging had the highest sensitivity (94 %), but a low specificity (73 %), with 3 of 11 intact mandibles interpreted as positive. Furthermore, MR often overestimated the extent of tumour invasion. On the other hand, CT and panoramic X-ray had a lower sensitivity (64 and 63 %, respectively) and a higher specificity (89 and 90 %, respectively). Computed tomography (using 5-mm sections) and panoramic X-ray had a similar accuracy, and negative findings do not exclude invasion. Magnetic resonance imaging was the most sensitive technique but had more false positives and frequently overestimated the extent of tumour invasion. Because none of the radiological techniques are accurate enough, clinical examination seems at present to remain the most important modality in deciding between segmental and marginal resection. Tumour invasion at CT or panoramic X-ray is a strong argument for a segmental resection.

    Notes: Abstract The study on the effect of acquired resistance to mercury on the phage sensitivity pattern of Staphylococcus aureus and its adherence to buccal epithelial cells showed increased lag period in growth and inverse relationship between the mercury resistance and cell wall teichoic acid, protein A and binding of cells to normal humal buccal cells. The phage pattern was found to change with the development of mercury resistance.

    Notes: The c-axis oscillation photographs of platelet-shaped crystals exhibit curious disorder features on X-ray diffraction photographs. These disorders are shown to be shape-dependent and are not caused by any real disorder in the stacking of layers. Another type of disorder which appears on X-ray diffraction photographs of cadmium iodide polytypic crystals is the 'arcing' disorder. It is shown that in view of the paucity of experimental evidence, the 'arcing' cannot be understood on the basis of the occurrence of manifold tilt boundaries.
