    Notes: Abstract Foraging behaviour in the South American sunstar Heliaster helianthus (Lamarck) was investigated quantitatively on a subtropical rocky shore in central Peru. H. helianthus feeds mainly on two mussel species, Semimytilus algosus (Gould) and Perumytilus purpuratus (Lamarck). A sequence of foraging behaviour was described and observations were made of the timing of attacks on mussel beds by sun-stars. Although H. helianthus is capable of foraging out of water, an unusual trait for asteroids, the timing of such foraging appears to be well adjusted to avoid the risk of prolonged heat and desiccation. Foraging activity began 4 h 52 min before high tide and 3 h 19 min after high tide, with a mode between 2 h 30 min and 2 h before high tide. Fifty-two percent of all foraging activity began between 3 h 30 min and 2 h before high tide, while only 12.4% began after high tide. This suggests that H. helianthus mainly relies upon changes in the rate of tidal increase as a cue to begin foraging. Foraging activity ceased between 3 h 40 min before and 4 h 29 min after high tide, with 48% ending between 2 and 0.5 h before high tide. The duration of foraging ranged from 19 to 190 min, with values between 30 and 80 min accounting for 67.4% of all observations. The median duration was 62 min. No significant correlation was detected between the time when foraging activity commenced and its duration. The intensity of foraging activity varied on consecutive days, with a general pattern of decreasing intensity after a day of relatively high activity. Foraging location in relation to a mussel bed was analysed on a marked, 8 m stretch of rocky shore. The numbers of foraging H. helianthus observed on different sections of the shore were related neither to the width of the mussel zone nor to the vertical position of the lower edge of the mussel zone, indicating that sun-stars do not rely upon these factors to assess prey availability and that ideal free distribution with regard to prey abundance does not occur on the spatial scale examined.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of variable food supply on growth rate and feeding behaviour in two coexisting intertidal gastropods were examined through field and laboratory experiments involving mark and recapture procedures, growth experiments under controlled food supply and video observations of feeding. All cohorts of both Japeuthria species grew most in summer, with the highest growth rate being achieved by the youngest cohort of both sexes. In contrast, almost all cohorts (except the youngest one) showed zero to negative growth in winter. The growth rates of Japeuthria species clearly varied depending on feeding frequencies and the initial size of individuals. Females of both species had a significantly higher growth rate than males, though the difference became less marked with decreasing food supply. The total time spent on feeding and the length of the first feeding bout generally increased as the duration of the interval between meals was increased across treatments. From both the field growth experiment and the observations of feeding behaviour it is clear that J. ferrea had a higher frequency of feeding than J. cingulata in the field; 1- to 3-d intervals of feeding frequency in the former and 3- to 6-d intervals in the latter. Most notably, the two species showed a reversal in growth rates with changing conditions of food supply. When food was relatively abundant J. ferrea achieved better growth than J. cingulata, but J. cingulata grew better than J. ferrea under low food supply. In view of the fact that J. ferrea seems to be competitively superior to J. cingulata under normal levels, the present observation that J. cingulata can perform better than J. ferrea when food availability is low gives an important advantage to the latter in terms of its coexistence with the former.

    Notes: Abstract Patterns of feeding in a population of Heliaster helianthus (Lamarck), a common and dominant species of starfish indigenous to the Pacific South American coast, were investigated in an intertidal habitat in central Peru from October 1986 to April 1987. The H. helianthus population comprised individuals of 3.5 to 30.2 cm body size (diameter) with two modal size classes. The number of rays ranged between 18 and 40, and individuals with 31 to 33 rays accounted for ca. 42% of the total population. There was a higher rate of increase in ray number with body size amongst small individuals(〈13.0 cm diam). H. helianthus is capable of feeding on more than one prey item at a time (average of 5.6 to 13.2 prey items handled, with several predators observed to hold 〉100), and both the number of prey individuals captured and the total prey biomass were significantly correlated with predator size. Amongst a total of 1132 feeding observations, the largest number of predators (an average of 85.4% of those feeding) were preying on the mussel Semimytilus algosus whilst another mussel, Perumytilus purpuratus, ranked second with 21,9% of predators feeding. The proportion of S. algosus in the diet increased from 65.4% in the smallest predator size-group (≤10.9 cm diam) to 91.2% in the largest (≥19.0 cm). In contrast, P. purpuratus and barnacles were more highly represented in the diet of small H. helianthus. The smallest size-group (≤10.9 cm) had low dietary overlap with larger sizes and less specialized prey utilization. Two geographically separated populations of H. helianthus in Peru and Chile showed contrasting patterns of prey utilization. S. algosus and P. purpuratus comprised 85.5 and 6.5% by number in the diet of the Peruvian population, respectively, whilst corresponding figures for the Chilean population were 8.3 and 60.5%, with barnacles attaining a higher share (22.6%). However, the total number of prey individuals per feeding predator was almost the same in Peru and Chile, with 10.0 and 10.7 individuals, respectively. H. helianthus individuals of different sizes occupy slightly different microhabitats within the intertidal area, which, coupled with differential spatial distribution of prey species, results in the predator population being able to utilize a wide range of resources.

Habitat complexity is thought to exert a significant influence on ecological communities, but its operation under variable natural conditions is not well understood, particularly in freshwater. To elucidate the role of habitat complexity, in particular the fractal structure of surface irregularity, in a stream system, field colonisation experiments were conducted at three times of year (summer, winter and spring) using natural substrates with different levels of fractal dimension in a small coastal mountain stream of southern Japan.2. In the winter experiment, comparison was also made between the standard (control) treatment and the resource-preconditioning treatment whereby experimental plates were conditioned in the natural stream environment to allow the accumulation of potential food resources (algae and detritus) for 1 month prior to the experiment.3. Species abundance patterns observed at different times of year showed little systematic variation with levels of habitat complexity but largely followed the patterns expected from, or lying in between, the Random Assortment model and the random fraction model.4. Taxon richness and density increased with habitat complexity in all seasons except for density in spring. Different taxa showed different patterns of change with habitat complexity, which also varied with seasons. Biomass of invertebrates showed no systematic trend with an increase in habitat complexity.5. Chlorophyll-a concentrations tended to be lower in more complex habitats, particularly in summer. In contrast, fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) tended to increase with habitat complexity. However, the relationship between these potential food resources and invertebrate assemblages remain unclear.6. While there were no significant differences in taxon richness and biomass of invertebrates between the resource-preconditioning and the control treatment, density was higher in the former than in the latter. The abundance of relatively large, surface-dwelling animals showed more marked temporal variation over the entire period of colonisation in the resource-preconditioning treatment than in the control treatment.7. Body size of invertebrates tended to decline with fractal complexity, indicating that crevice sizes could affect habitat use by benthic animals of different sizes. In addition, body size was larger in the resource-preconditioning treatment than in the control treatment, suggesting that body size in invertebrate assemblages was controlled by a mixture of factors. Thus, the present study demonstrates that habitat structure affects benthic invertebrate assemblages in a complex manner.

    Notes: A mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser is made to oscillate at the frequency of the UVSOR storage ring, 90.115 MHz, in a multi-bunch operation mode. The third harmonic of the laser is available in the wavelength range 243–280 nm. Synchrotron radiation from an undulator is monochromated by a grazing-incidence monochromator and introduced coaxially with the laser. The temporal profile of the photon pulses is monitored in situ by a luminescing substance/photomultiplier combination. The delay timing between the laser and synchrotron radiation can be changed from 0 to 11 ns by adjusting an electronic module that provides phase-locked loop stabilization of the laser pulse. The reliability and feasibility of this laser-synchrotron radiation combination technique are demonstrated by applying pump-probe experiments to two physical systems. The first system is photodissociation of iodomethane (CHA) with a laser photon, followed by photoionization of I and CH3 fragments with synchrotron radiation. The second, two-photon ionization of He atoms, is studied as the prototype of a time-resolved experiment. The He+ signal counts as a function of the laser–synchrotron radiation delay are found to be enhanced in a narrow time window, which can be interpreted in terms of a short lifetime of the resonant state, He*(1s2p 1P), produced by primary synchrotron radiation excitation.
