The X-ray fluorescence techniques were applied for study of Zn accumulation in CNS tissue. Concentration of this element was determined in white and gray matter of the brains without any neurodegeneration processes with respect to ageing. Significant increase of Zn accumulation with age was observed in white matter. As is supposed, Zn may also play an important role in neurodegeneration. Topographic and quantitative analysis of this element was performed for Parkinson's disease (PD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The study was performed in tissue slices taken from substantia nigra (SN) and spinal cord. The results showed that accumulation of Zn in PD neurones of SN is significantly increased in comparison with the control, meanwhile degenerated motor neurones of spinal cord in ALS reveal decreased level of Zn.
