    Notes: Aim To compare the efficacy, safety and tolerability of adapalene gel 0.1% vs. tretinoin gel 0.025% in a Chinese patient population.Background Although acne vulgaris is a common problem among Asians and Asian-Americans, little has been published on the specific manifestations, sequelae, and treatment-responsiveness of this disorder in Asian skin types. Since Asian skin types tend to be more highly pigmented than those of white people of European descent, many Asians share the predisposition toward postinflammatory hyperpigmentation seen in Africans, African-Americans and other dark-skinned peoples. It is generally assumed that the efficacy and safety of topical retinoids is the same in Asians as in white people. Tretinoin has been available in China for decades; adapalene became available in 1998.Methods A total of 150 patients with grade II–III acne vulgaris seen at three dermatology clinics were randomized to 8 weeks of daily treatment with either adapalene gel 0.1% or tretinoin gel 0.025%. Counts of total lesions, inflammatory lesions and non-inflammatory lesions were made at baseline and again at treatment weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8. Global assessment ratings, based on percent lesion reduction from baseline were also made. Erythema, burning, pruritus, scaling and dryness were rated on a 0–3 severity scale.Results A total of 139 patients completed the efficacy evaluation, and 144 patients completed the safety evaluation. Both adapalene and tretinoin produce dramatic reductions in total, inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesion counts, in the range of 69–74% on average. More than 70% of patients in both groups had complete clearance or marked improvement. In general, irritation was mild, but was both more common and more severe in the tretinoin group vs. the adapalene group. No systemic side effects were seen.Conclusions Adapalene offers comparable efficacy to tretinoin, but is less irritating. It represents a good alternative for the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris in Chinese patients.

    Notes: Summary A monoclonal antibody was used to demonstrate proliferating cell nuclear antigen in routine, formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections of dermal melanocytic naevi, including naevus naevocellularis partim lipomatodes, in different age-groups. The labelling indices of the melanocytic naevus cells were 〈 1% of those in the overlying epidermal basal cells, and showed a statistically significant decrease with ageing, and also in naevus naevocellularis partim lipomatodes, whereas the indices of the basal cells in the overlying interfollicular epidermis did not show any age-related changes.

    Notes: Background  Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a group of autosomal recessive diseases characterized by hypersensitivity to ultraviolet rays. Among its eight complementation groups, XP group A (XPA) is the most severe type. The XPAC gene has been identified as the defective gene in XPA patients.Objectives  To examine genomic DNA from a Chinese family with XPA, to determine the XPAC mutation and, after genetic counselling, to undertake DNA-based prenatal diagnosis in a subsequent pregnancy.Methods  Fetal DNA was extracted from amniotic fluid and used to amplify exon 5 of XPAC containing the potential mutation. Direct sequencing and restriction endonuclease digestion were used for prenatal diagnosis.Results  We identified a homozygous nonsense XPAC mutation of 631C→T, which results in an R211X mutation in XPA protein, in the proband. Both her parents are heterozygous. Prenatal diagnosis demonstrated a heterozygous sequence predicting an unaffected child, and a healthy girl was born.Conclusions  These data provide the first example of a DNA-based prenatal test for genodermatosis in China.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung  Die Arbeit befaßt sich mit der Ermittlung thermophysikalischer Eigenschaften und den zu ihrer Bestimmung dienlichen Meßmethoden von formstabilisiertem Paraffin, das eine neue, zur Speicherung latenter Energie geeignete Materialart darstellt, da es beim Schmelzen die Form des Festzustandes beibehält. Es kann folglich in Systemen zur Speicherung latenter Energie ohne einschließendes Behältnis verwendet werden. Zur Messung der effektiven Wärmeleitfähigkeit, der latenten Energie, der spezifischen Wärme und der Dichte von formstabilisiertem Paraffin wurden die folgenden, speziell für diese Untersuchung entwickelten Meßgeräte eingesetzt: Ein instationär betriebenes Hitzdrahtsystem, ein Differiental-Abtastkalorimeter, ein Wasserkalorimeter und ein Gerät zur Ermittlung der Volumenausdehnung. Aus den gewonnenen Daten ließen sich Korrelationsgleichungen für die o.g. thermo-physikalischen Eigenschaften von formstabilisiertem Paraffin als Funktionen der physikalischen Eigenschaft und des Massenanteils jedes darin enthaltenen Konstituenten aufstellen.
    Notes: Abstract  This report deals with thermophysical properties and measuring methods of shape-stabilized paraffin as a new type of latent heat storage material, which keeps the same shape in a solid state when the paraffin melts. Therefore, this type paraffin can be used in a latent heat storage system without encapsulation. A transient hot wire method, a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), a water calorimeter and a volume expansion meter, which were developed in the present study, were used to measure effective thermal conductivity, latent heat, specific heat and density of the shape-stabilized paraffin, respectively. From the obtained data, useful correlation equations of the above-mentioned thermophysical properties of the shape-stabilized paraffin were expressed as functions of physical property and mass fraction of each constituent of the shape-stabilized paraffin.

    Notes: We propose object-oriented Petri nets with changeable structure (OPNs-CS) in this paper for effective modelling of production systems with changing structures. Two mechanisms for carrying out the structural changes in OPNs-CS are defined. One is for the modification of message passing relationships between distinct OPNs and the other is for adding of OPNs to, and the removing of OPNs from, a model. A case study is provided to show that OPNs-CS can cope with both the uncertainties which may exist during the model-building phase of a one-of-a-kind production (OKP) system and the structural changes of the system which often occur while the production system is in operation.

    Notes: An object-oriented Petri net with changeable structure (OPN-CS) is capable of modelling complex dynamic production systems subject to changes. However, an OPN-CS is limted to functionality modelling of the system. For performance modelling of a complex dynamic production system, OPNs-CS are extended to temporised OPNc-CS (TOPNs-CS). The extension is carried out by temporising OPNs of production resources and the message passing relationships among production resources. The methods of capturing some performance proprieties based on a TOPN-CS model of a system are presented. A case study is provided to show how TCPN-CS is used for modelling complex dynamic production systems. TOPNs-CS can be applied in control, scheduling, and optimisation of the processes of a dynamic production system subject to changes.
