    Notes: SiO2/Ge nanocrystal/SiO2 structures have been fabricated by deposition of Ge film on a SiO2 layer and subsequent oxidation of the structure at a temperature between 800 °C and 1000 °C. Secondary ion mass spectrometry results indicate that the Ge precipitates into the bulk SiO2 at a density of 1×1012 cm−2. Raman spectra show a sharp peak at 300 cm−1 for the nanocrystallized Ge. The nanocrystal diameter is determined to be 5 nm on average. In the metal–insulator–silicon structure, electron storage occurs in the SiO2/Ge/SiO2 potential well via electron tunneling into the oxide film. Capacitance-voltage measurements indicate that flatband voltage (VFB) shifts to 0.91 V after the electron injection. The VFB shift is attributed to the charge storing for a single electron per potential well.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract  Adoptive immunotherapy (AIT) for non-hematological malignancies, using HLA-matched donor lymphocytes, has been rarely reported. For a 35-year-old male patient with peritoneal disseminated advanced gastric cancer, we performed AIT using lymphocytes from his HLA-matched 37-year-old brother and a streptococcal preparation, OK-432, as an antigen. After the donor had been immunized by intradermal administration of OK-432, OK-432-reactive lymphocytes were induced in vitro and transferred to the patient intravenously with OK-432. Low-dose systemic immunochemotherapy, using interleukin-2, 5-fluorouracil and cyclophosphamide, was concurrently administered with AIT. As a result, the Schnitzler metastasis in the patient reduced in size without any significant graft-versus-host-related complications. One of the effector mechanisms of therapeutic benefit was suggested to be cytokine release from the transferred OK-432-reactive lymphocytes. Our findings suggest the safety and efficacy of AIT using lymphocytes from an HLA-matched sibling and OK-432 as an antigen. Further studies to investigate the use of tumor-associated antigen and an HLA-matched sibling’s lymphocytes for AIT of advanced cancer are warranted.

    Notes: Abstract For a one-electron homonuclear diatomic system with arbitrary nuclear charge Z, the change in the nature of diatomic interaction and its density origin are quantitatively examined as a function of Z by the method of binding/antibinding analyses based on the Hellmann-Feynman theorem. In the Isσg ground state, two energy extrema, potential barrier at a large internuclear distance and potential minimum at a smaller distance, appear for 1〈Z〈1.44. The binding part of the partitioned Hellmann-Feynman forces suffers little effect of Z, and these two extrema are attributed respectively to the increase in the nuclear repulsion and to the decrease in the antibinding part of the partitioned forces. In the “antibonding” 2pσu state, a stable molecule is formed for Z〈1. This appearance of the bonding nature is shown to have its origin in the binding part which is almost unchanged by the decrease of Z.

    Notes: The bimolecular reactions in the title were measured behind shock waves by monitoring the O-atom production in COS—O2—Ar and CS2—O2—Ar mixtures over the temperature range between 1400 and 2200 K. A value of the rate constant for S + O2 → SO + O was evaluated to be (3.8 ± 0.7) × 1012 cm3 mol-1 s-1 between 1900 and 2200 K. This was connected with the data at lower temperatures to give an expression k2 = 1010.85 T0.52 cm3 mol-1 s-1 between 250 and 2200 K. An expression of the rate constant for CS2 + O2 → CS + SO2 was obtained to be k21 = 1012.0 exp(-32 kcal mol-1/RT) cm3 mol-1 s-1 with an error factor of 2 between 1500 and 2100 K.
