Notes: Summary A 78-year-old man, who suffered from chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and diabetes mellitus, but was human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative, developed disseminated angiomatous papule's following a cat scratch. Bacillary angiomatosis was diagnosed by light and electron microscopic demonstration of the causative bacteria in the vascular lesions. The lesions resolved completely when he was treated with erythromycin. This case demonstrates that bacillary angiomatosis can be an important cutaneous manifestation of immunodeficiency in individuals who are not infected with the human immunodeficiency virus.

Notes: Summary In order to clarify the early phenomena involved in the lung reaction to hyperoxia, twenty adult male rats were exposed to 100% oxygen at 1 ATA. Morphological pulmonary lesions were detectable after only 24 h hyperoxia, and included vasoconstriction and perivascular oedema, bronchiolar constriction, and pericyte reaction. The lesions were irregularly scattered within the lung parenchyma and occurred preferentially in areas centred on bronchiolo-vascular stems. Even at the latest stages, pulmonary heterogeneity was obvious, from the coexistence of areas damaged at different times. Neuro-epithelial-bodies were found under the bronchiolar epithelium; the morphological aspect of the neuro-endocrine cells observed was consistent with hyperoxia-induced modulation of their secretory activity. Taken together, our findings show the speed of development of hyperoxia-induced pulmonary changes and raise some pathogenic considerations.

Notes: Summary Horse-radish peroxidase injected into the femoral vein of intact rats, or infused at 30 cm H2O pressure into the main pancreatic duct of intact dogs, entered easily the interstitial spaces surrounding acini and acinar cells. The latter are interconnected at their luminal segments by zonulae occludentes. These junctions form a barrier to tracer penetrating from the interstitium towards the lumen of terminal ductules. However, the intraductally infused peroxidase entered the interstitial spaces, probably through the pressure injured acinar cells, as did colloidal carbon particles when infused intraductally.

Notes: Summary Intravenous injection of hexadimethrine bromide in rats causes necrosis of the anterior pituitary. As early as after half an hour there is dilatation of the vessels, slight intravascular fibrin precipitation, rupture of the vessel walls, and leaking of plasma into the spaces between the parenchymal cells. At one hour, platelets accumulate around the small fibrin coagula and also become attached to the ruptures of the vascular walls; these may occlude the capillary lumen. The necrosis of the parenchyma becomes recognizable later, and is apparently secondary. The necrosis is thus considered to be the result of a local circulatory disturbance.

Notes: Summary The formation and differentiation of the endoplasmic reticulum (e.r.) have been studied electronmicroscopically on rats for 1, 2, 3, 4 as well as for 10 and 20 days following subtotal hepatectomy. On the first postoperative day hydropical and fatty degeneration, swelling, disorganization and distribution of the e.r. was observed. Contemporaneously with the reduction of the degenerative changes the e.r. begins to develop. In the early phase of the regeneration a “dark” and a “light” hepatic cell can be distinguished. Some of the “light” cells contain a small quantity of cell-organella and it is particularly suitable to study the development of the e.r. The regeneration of e.r. starts with the increase of smooth-surfaced tubules and vesicula and re-formation of compact reticular network. The glycogen is gradually increased among membranes of these reticular networks and large areas of glycogen begin to appear from the 3. postoperative day on. The mitochondria, smooth- and rough-surfaced e.r. membranes and the ribosomes are grouped around the glycogen area and get closely connected with each other. On the basis of the morphological picture the increase of the ergastoplasm seems to be secured by the close topographical connection of the above mentioned cell components (and very likely by their functional cooperation). The e.r. plays a rôle in the removal of the fat accumulated in the period of the degenerative changes.

Notes: Summary The ultrastructure of liver cells was studied in three groups of bats (Myotis myotis) captured in March. 1. Hibernating animals: The liver cells contain much glycogen and large mitochondria, poorly developed ER, relatively well developed Golgi apparatus, various amounts of lysosomes. Most of the bile canaliculi are closed. 2. Non-hibernating, starving animals: 24 hours after arousal the glycogen and lipid droplets disappear from the liver cells, the mitochondria swell slightly. There is no essential alteration in the ER. In the liver cells of the starving animals numerous autophagic vacuoles appear including disintegrated cytoplasmic components. 3. Non-hibernating force-fed animals: They were given food rich in fat and protein, containing sugar and a drug increasing bile secretion. Within an hour, glycogen and lipid reappears in the liver cells, autophagic vacuoles disappear, mitochondria become larger. After feeding, the Golgi apparatus hypertrophies considerably, many bile canaliculi open, the number of the peribiliary lysosomes decreases.
