Notes: A receiving system for a Thomson scattering experiment is described. This system includes a multichannel grating spectrometer designed for use with a high repetition rate Nd:YAG laser. Fiber-optic coupling bundles are used at the input and output ends. High throughput is maintained with large-diameter, low f-number grating and aspheric lenses. The detectors are high-responsivity, temperature-compensated avalanche photodiodes. Results of the calibration, including anti-Stokes Raman scattering, are presented. The spectrometer is designed to operate in the Te range between 50 eV and 2 keV with a minimum electron density sensitivity of 1.6×1011 cm−3.

Notes: This paper describes a detailed experimental study of the integrating noise of a silicon avalanche diode detector using a current integrating ADC CAMAC module. The dark current noise and shot noise measurements are discussed in relation to a previously described theoretical model. The results confirm that the model can be used to optimize the detector parameters in order to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio of the detection system.

Notes: Abstract A higher order theoretical model is presented to describe the behaviour of FIR point contact Schottky diodes for high signal levels and/or high bias currents. This model includes non-linear perturbation on the voltage induced at the Schottky junction. Its fit to experimental results in case of envelope detection is also discussed and compared to the fit determined with our previous non-perturbation theory.

Notes: Abstract The field of view of optical heterodyne systems are usually limited by a simple criterion- namely, that ARΩR ≍ λ2, where AR is an effective aperture, ΩR the corresponding field of view and λ the optical wavelength. This paper will demonstrate that with a simple change of systems geometry and the possible use of array detectors, this severe restriction can be alleviated considerably and, in some cases, eliminated. Both coherent sources and thermal radiation sources are considered. This might suggest that heterodyne systems that were eliminated in the past because of that criterion alone, could turn out to be, not only possible, but even advantageous compared to other techniques.

Notes: Abstract A detailed experimental study of the low frequency (video) response of a quasioptical Schottky diode detector over the microwave and FIR wavelength range is presented. An optimization of the responsivity versus the bias current is proposed and a generalized curve of the saturation power versus the FIR wavelength is given. This curve defines for any antenna point-contact Schottky diode detector, suitable for FIR detection, the power range for a linear detector response. A simple method is also described to calculate the coupling efficiency of the laser radiation into the antenna reception pattern.

Notes: Abstract A detailed theoretical and experimental study of the heterodyne performance of a quasioptical Schottky diode detector is presented. The experimental results have been obtained by mixing the radiation from a FIR laser with the output of a 67–73 GHz Klystron. The heterodyne signal variation versus various parameters and its relation to the special case of two lasers mixing are described. The mixer characteristics are a NEP value of 2×10−19W/Hz and a detector bandwidth of at least 9 GHz. Experimental evidence of harmonics generation of submillimetric frequencies at the diode junction is also presented.

Notes: Abstract A theoretical study is made of saturation effects of FIR point contacts Schottky diodes when used in the envelope detection mode of operation. A model is described that fits experimental results for radiation wavelength ranging from microwaves down to FIR wavelengths. This model permits the prediction of saturation levels throughout this range.
