Notes: Small green and ripe mechanically harvested strawberries were processed into puree and combined with 60 and 80% sliced ripe fruit to determine the effects of holding after harvest, percent green fruit in puree, processing procedure and storage on quality of frozen sliced strawberries. Green and ripe fruit puree added to the sliced strawberries resulted in higher viscosity and lower ascorbic acid, total anthocyanins and red color as compared to packs with 100% sliced ripe fruit. The mixtures of sliced ripe fruit and up to 40% puree were rated acceptable by a sensory panel. Heating the puree may be beneficial to color during long-term storage. Holding of fresh strawberries for 24 hr at 24°C after cleaning decreased the ascorbic acid, viscosity of syrup and color of the frozen pack. Storage of the frozen product decreased ascorbic acid and color.

Notes: Sr2(AlTa)O6 thin films (2000–3000 A(ring)) have been deposited on MgO (001) substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). X-ray-diffraction analysis shows that the Sr2(AlTa)O6 grows with the c axis highly oriented normal to the substrate plane and very good in-plane epitaxy. The subsequently deposited YBa2Cu3O7−x films using PLD on Sr2(AlTa)O6 buffered MgO substrates exhibit excellent epitaxial growth with a narrow rocking curve width and a small φ scan peak width. The critical temperature Tc0 of 90–92 K has been achieved reproducibly and the critical current density is over 2.7×106 A/cm2 at 77 K. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In order to build high-temperature superconductor (HTS) multichip modules (MCMs), it is necessary to grow several epitaxial layers of YBCO that are separated by thick dielectric layers without seriously affecting the quality of the YBCO layers. In this work, we have successfully fabricated YBCO/YSZ/SiO2/YSZ/YBCO structures on single-crystal LaAlO3 substrates using a combination of pulsed laser deposition for the YBCO layers and ion-beam-assisted rf sputtering to obtain biaxially aligned YSZ intermediate layers. The bottom YBCO layer had a Tc∼89 K, Jc∼7.2×105 A/cm2 at 77 K, whereas the top YBCO layer had a Tc∼86 K, Jc∼6×105 A/cm2 at 77 K. The magnetic field and temperature dependence of Jc for the YBCO films in the multilayer have been obtained. The results for each of the YBCO layers within the YBCO/YSZ/SiO2/YSZ/YBCO structure are quite similar to those for a good quality single-layer YBCO film. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A pulsed laser deposition system with a rotating reflector, which can generate an extended plume with a diameter of about 40 mm, has been proven to be viable in producing large area YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) thin films. Films with uniformity of thickness and electrical properties to within a few percents were obtained. By making a further modification on this laser scanning system, YBCO films with various thicknesses can be deposited in situ on several pieces of substrates under essentially identical deposition conditions, and particularly, in a continuous fashion. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) images reveal that films grown on NdGaO3 follow the Stranski–Krastanov (layer then island growth) mode, while films grown on as-polished MgO and on annealed MgO follow the Volmer–Weber (islands without layer growth) mode and step-flow mode, respectively. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The intercalation of sodium dodecyl sulfate and exchange of dodecyl sulfate anion into layered double hydroxides has been examined by means of X-ray diffraction, infrared and thermogravimetric procedures. Three types of derivatives were obtained having mean interlayer spacings of ≈26 Å, 36 Å and 47 Å, respectively. These interlayer distances did not correlate with the amount of organic incorporated between the layers but, as shown by computer simulations, depended upon the orientation of the chains within the interlamellar space. In several reactions both intercalation of neutral sodium dodecyl sulfate as well as exchange of the dodecyl anion took place. Attempts to remove the alkyl sulfate chains with dilute acid resulted in dissolution of the more basic metals producing non-stoichiometric layered products.

Notes: Summary We observed pairing, when the ph gene was present, between wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell.) chromosome 4B, and an Agropyron intermedium (Host) Beauv. chromosome (Ai) carrying a gene resistant to wheat streak mosaic (WSM). In a monosomic addition polyhaploid [2n = 22 = 19' + 5B' (ph) + 4B' + Ai'], we recorded an average of 4.1 bivalents and 0.3 trivalents per cell. Induced homoeologous pairing was most effective when both 5B chromosomes carrying ph gene were present. Our data suggest that chromosome 4B of wheat and the Agropyron chromosome (Ai) carrying a gene for resistance to WSM are homoeologous and that it is possible to use either ph mutant or nullisomic 5B stock to induce genetic recombination between the two chromosomes.

Notes: The topography of the microscopic shear deformation zones (SDZ) in the glassy polymer PPO was studied by using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and was used to analyze the growth and breakdown of the SDZ. It was found that the local stress and strain are almost constant within the deformation zones but higher than those in the elastic regions. The maximum strain rate during stretching was found to always locate near the SDZ boundaries, indicating that most drawing took place there. With both the local stress and strain obtained for every point within the SDZ, it is possible to construct a full stress-strain curve for the drawing of the tiny local deformation zones. The stress-strain curve clearly demonstrates a yield point in the beginning of microyielding where the tensile modulus was found to be much lower than that in the elastic regime. Some strain hardening, however, took place at larger deformation. Moreover, we found that for each microscopic region participated in the microdrawing the local strain rate increased with local strain until a critical strain around 0.65 was reached, after which the strain rate decreased with strain. This critical strain may be related to the chain entanglement network structure because it shifted to 0.75 when PS diluents were blended into PPO, indicating that strain hardening was delayed by the increase of chain entanglement mesh size. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
