Notes: Abstract The preventive effect of maternal avoidance of cow’s milk and eggs on the development of atopic dermatitis and sensitization to food allergens was studied in a prospective trial with families at high risk for atopy. intervention included encouraging exclusive breast feeding for at least 3 months and delaying the controlled introduction of solid foods. In addition, one group received a maternal diet with the complete avoidance of milk and eggs in the last trimester of pregnancy and during the period of exclusive breast feeding, another group had the same diet starting after delivery, and mothers of the third group had no dietary restrictions. The period prevalences of atopic dermatitis as well as the rates of specific sensitization to eggs and milk at 6 and 12 months were not significantly different between groups. We were unable to demonstrate a significant preventive effect of maternal diet. Conclusion While breast feeding should be promoted for children at risk for atopy, mothers can be encouraged to stay on normal diet during pregnancy and the breast feeding period.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of the β2-adrenergic drug fenoterol, which is used as a tocolytic agent in pregnancy, has been investigated in pregnant (n=9) and nonpregnant (n=5) women during a constant rate intravenous infusion. Clearance and mean residence time were found to be 1990 (1879/2220; Median, Q25/Q75) ml/min and 9.2 (8.0/14.0) min in the pregnant and 2126 (1915/2130) ml/min and 16.6 (16.5/32.1) min in the nonpregnant women, respectively. In addition, fenoterol clearance was estimated in 88 women from a single blood sample collected at steady state during IV therapy and the effect of gestational age on clearance was studied. Clearance displayed large inter-individual variation. There was no apparent correlation between clearance and gestational age. We conclude that there is no need to adjust the dose on pharmacokinetic grounds in the course of pregnancy.

Notes: By means of inelastic neutron scattering experiments, we have determined the excitation energy of the first excited state in the magnetic exchange coupled Cu four-nucleus complex [CuCl (OCD2CD2N (C2D5)2)]4. We found for the transition energy the value 4.3 meV, in good agreement with results of magnetic susceptibility experiments. The magnetic origin of this excitation is demonstrated by its temperature and momentum dependence.

Notes: The magnetic structure of Mn(Nb0.5Ta0.5)2O6 with columbite structure was determined by means of neutron diffraction using single-crystal data. The intensities were gained by means of a small cold Eulerian cradle. The evaluation leads to a canted magnetic structure GxAz (G: S1 = - S2 = S3 = - S4; A: S1 = - S2 = - S3 = S4). The magnetic moments form an angle of 35.4° with the a axis. The magnetic space group is Pb'cn. The canting angle depends on the Nb content.

Notes: The cation distribution of the compounds (Fe0,5Ta0,5)O2 and (Fe0,45Nb0,53)O2 has been redetermined by the combined use of neutron and X-ray powder diffraction. Analysis of the powder patterns showed that the compounds are isostructural, their structure being of the rutile-type AO2. The cations are statistically distributed. There exists no partial ordering, neither of Fe and Ta nor of Fe and Nb. Neutron diffraction patterns taken at 4.2 K showed only one magnetic reflection, which is strongly broadened. The magnetic structure of (Fe0.5Ta0.5)O2 is of MnF2-type, whereas (Fe0.45Nb0.53)O2 orders in the BEY-structure. Profile analysis of these broadened reflections was carried out with the convolution integral of a Gaussian with a Lorentzian function, from which correlation lengths could be derived.

Notes: The magnetic structures of the columbite NiNb2O6 and of Fe2WO6 of tri-α-PbO2 structure were solved by means of neutron diffraction. NiNb2O6 consists of a collinear magnetic structure with a doubled b axis and the direction of the magnetic moments parallel to the a axis. The magnetic space group is Pb21/c. Fe2WO6 consists of a complicated canted structure with moments forming an angle of 23.5° with the c axis. The z component orders according to + + + + - - - -, the x component orders according to + + - - - - + +. The magnetic space group is Pn'c2'.

Notes: The crystal structure of monoclinic FeCl2.2H2O (F) has been refined using single-crystal data. The metamagnetic behaviour of F and CoCl2. 2H2O (C) has been determined on the basis of single-crystal measurements. At T = 4.2 K the reflexions of the antiferromagnetic zero-field phases disappear when a magnetic field of Hc1(F) = 39 kOe [Hc1(C) = 31.8 kOe] is applied along the direction of sublattice magnetization. In both salts the intermediate-field phase is collinear with a unit cell in which the a axis is tripled. This configuration vanishes at Hc2(F) = 46 kOe [Hc2(C) = 46 kOe] when the magnetically saturated configuration is reached. The three phases meet at a triple point at TT(F) = 11.7 K and HT(F) = 42.0 kOe [TT(C) = 8.9 K and HT(C) = 37.5 kOe]. Two types of phase transitions and tricritical points have been detected between the different configurations.

Notes: By means of neutron diffraction the magnetic structure of FeTa2O6 has been determined. The observed magnetic reflexions define a unit cell 2a, b, 2c. In order to match the tetragonal symmetry this cell must be enlarged again, which results in the final magnetic cell 2a, 2b, 2c with the magnetic space group Ic41/a. The structure contains two sublattices with the cells 2a, b, 2c and a, 2b, 2c, the moments of which are perpendicular to each other. The moments lie in the a/b plane and form an angle of φ = 45° with the a axis. The spin quantum number is found to be S = 2.04.
