Notes: Summary The effect of different doses of continuous iodine infusion on xenotransplanted human thyroid tissue from toxic adenoma, and Graves' disease was examined using131I scintigraphy in athymic nude mice. In spite of pretreatment with high iodine doses (1.25 µg or 12.5 µg131I per day via i.p. implanted minipumps, Alzet 2002), the radioactivity localized in the transplanted tissue of toxic adenoma was more than 50% of the radioactivity in the transplants of the controls without iodine pretreatment 2 h after131I injection, which was not a significant difference. Moreover, after high iodine treatment the131I turnover rate in the thyroid transplants of toxic adenoma increased significantly. A tendency to an increased turnover rate was already observed with the lower dose. In contrast to that the transplants of Graves' disease tissue and mouse thyroids responded to high iodine treatment with a significant decrease in131I retention. Serum of an untreated patient with active Graves' disease or injections of TSH increased131I retention and the131I turnover rate in the transplanted tissue of Graves' disease significantly (P〈0.01). Iodine turnover was still increased after high iodine treatment. These results again show that thyroid tissue of toxic adenoma remains hyperfunctional after transplantation to athymic nude mice in contrast to thyroid tissue of Graves' disease which loses all signs of hyperfunction, when no exogenous stimulator is administered. In addition, these data clearly demonstrate, for the first time under in vivo conditions, that high iodine doses accelerate iodine turnover and thus presumably hyperfunction of human toxic adenoma in a dose-dependent manner as well as of the activated thyroid in Graves' disease.

Notes: The structural and optical properties of high-quality homoepitaxial ZnTe films are investigated. A substrate surface treatment using diluted HF solution plays a key role in growing device-quality ZnTe layers. X-ray diffraction analysis of ZnTe epilayers based on the crystal-truncation-rod method suggests that a homoepitaxial ZnTe film grown on a HF-treated substrate can be regarded as an ideal truncated crystal without an interfacial layer, while a ZnTe layer grown on a substrate without HF treatment suggests the presence of an interfacial layer which may lead to degraded crystallinity of ZnTe overlayers. The crystal quality of the homoepitaxial ZnTe layers with HF treatments are characterized by an extremely narrow x-ray diffraction linewidth of 15.6 arcsec and dominant very sharp excitonic emission lines with dramatically reduced deep-level emission intensity in the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum. Three bound excitonic emission lines at neutral acceptors are observed in the PL from the high-quality ZnTe homoepitaxial layers in addition to the free-exciton emission line, suggesting the presence of three different kinds of residual acceptor impurities. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have investigated the structural and optical properties of Ga-doped ZnO films grown on GaN templates by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy. The carrier concentration in Ga-doped ZnO films can be controlled from 1.33×1018/cm3 to 1.13×1020/cm3. Despite high Ga incorporation, the linewidth of (0002) ω-rocking curves of Ga-doped ZnO films still lies in the range from 5 to 15 arc min. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of Ga-doped ZnO films show dominant near-bandedge emission with negligibly weak deep-level emission, independent of carrier concentration. The PL spectrum exhibits a new emission line at 3.358 eV, which corresponds to exciton emission bound to a Ga donor. To avoid degradation of the PL intensity, the maximum dopability of Ga in ZnO is determined to be around 2.6×1019/cm3. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report on an experimental study of buffer mechanism in plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy of ZnO on Al2O3(0001) with a MgO buffer. It lowers the surface energy and provides nucleation cores. As a result, lateral epitaxial growth of ZnO becomes favorable from the initial growth stage. The MgO buffer also affects the generation of dislocations in such a way that it reduces their density by introducing dislocation interactions. This study suggests that by employing an appropriate buffer to modify the initial nucleation environment, high quality heteroepitaxy is achievable even with large mismatch. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report on the molecular beam epitaxial growth of green (508 nm) and blue (489 nm) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on conductive ZnSe substrates. The resistivity of the (001)-oriented ZnSe wafers was drastically reduced by a zinc extraction treatment to typical values of 1×10−1 Ω cm. The intensity of an additional orange band around 600 nm observed in electroluminescence depends strongly on the wavelength of the multi-quantum-well emission. This can be explained by absorption and effective re-emission in the substrate material named internal photoluminescence and was confirmed by transmission and photoluminescence experiments with the bare substrates. The LEDs with lifetimes up to 100 hours proofed to be surprisingly stable compared to the structures on undoped ZnSe substrates grown before. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary A 56-year-old lady with distinct clinical symptoms was found to have an intravascular bronchioloalveolar tumour. The aetiology and pathogenesis of this disease are unknown; both a bronchoalveolar and a vascular origin of the tumour are discussed in the literature. For the first time, lymphatic spread of tumour to the lymphatic nodes of the hili of the lungs was encountered.

Notes: Summary A 25-year-old man with chest pain and shortness of breath was found to have a primary sarcoma of the pulmonary artery. On light- and electronmicroscopy and immunofluorescence microscopy the lesion was found to be composed of cells of smooth muscle origin. It was diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma. The cross and microscopic features of the tumor are described and the morphologic characteristics of previously reported vascular sarcomas are briefly reviewed.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Primäre Sarkome der Arteria pulmonalis sind seltene Tumoren.

Most of them are not recognized during life but accidentally found at autopsy. So primary leiomyosarcoma of the pulmonary artery is a very rare tumor.
