Notes: The feasibility of using a microdielectric sensor to characterize the cure behavior of a commercial prepreg roving was investigated. Chemical and physical characterization methods were first used to determine the uniformity of the prepreg material. Thermal, dynamic mechanical, and dielectric methods were then utilized to monitor the cure cycle. The dielectric response was found to be independent of the glass fibers of the prepreg and to show reproducible changes in the early part of cure over a temperature range of 80 to 135°C. The manufacturer's recommended cure temperature of 121°C (250°F) was found to correspond to the onset of the ultimate glass transition of the material. Variations in the dielectric response in the latter part of cure at this temperature and above were attributed in part to this event.

Notes: Torsional braid analysis was used to investigate the crosslinking behavior of linear quinoxaline polymers with and without reactive side groups. The kinetic parameter followed was the glass transition temperature during isothermal exposure in an inert atmosphere. With high molecular weight polyamide-quinoxaline copolymers (PPAQ), an initial decrease in Tg was observed during heat exposure which was followed by a subsequent increase in Tg. This was attributed to simultaneous chain scission and crosslinking reactions. Since the effect of random chain scission on the initial change in Tg of the highest molecular weight polymer samples is much stronger than on low molecular weight analogues, a Tg minimum was observed only on the highest molecular weight polymers. Because of the complexity of the reactions occurring one must consider the activation energies obtained from the Arrhenius plots as “apparent” activation energies. No attempt was made to elucidate the mechanisms of these reactions. It has been shown that isothermal heat exposure of high-temperature aromatic polymers in an inert atmosphere leads to crosslinking. In general, however, linear polymers that have reactive side groups such as methyl or carboxyphenyl groups along the polymer chain crosslink more rapidly than the analogs without these groups.

Notes: The synthesis of a series of regiospecifically substituted polyphenylacetylenes via sealed tube thermal polymerization has been accomplished. Measurement of their conductivities alone and in the presence of SO2, NH3, H2O, or dimethyl methylphosphonate vapors shows them to be extremely weakly conductive, contrary to previous reports. Higher conduction in these prior materials is thus attributed to the presence of ionic impurities arising from their method of synthesis. These results cast doubt on the suitability of such materials alone as chemical sensors but suggest that intentional incorporation of ionic species might be effective.

Notes: Recently, there has been concern over the effects of accidentally released conductive carbon and graphite fibers on unprotected electrical circuits. Because of their thermal stability, such fibers could be released by the involvement of a resin matrix composite in a fire. A simple method based on thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been developed which permits the assessment of release potential from such composites. Dynamic TGA is used to determine temperatures at which significant events such as onset of resin matrix decomposition occur. Isothermal TGA permits a determination of the time required to produce releasable fibers at a given temperature. SEM examination of residues from TGA experiments serves to characterize their physical state which, in turn, permits a more precise assessment of release potential. This method has been used to examine a large number of materials composed of several different fibers in a variety of thermoset and thermoplastic matrices. It is concluded that release potential varies inversely with resin thermal-oxidative stability and directly with fiber stability. The matching of matrix resin char and fiber stabilities is especially effective in suppressing fiber release.

Notes: Certain aspects of moisture sensitivity for selected polyurethane-polyether block copolymers were investigated. Exposure to ambient conditions tended to raise the impact velocity for projectile penetration and to decrease the brittleness of these materials. High values of relative humidity, whether applied immediately or after a time delay, led to softening and ductile response of an initially brittle formulation. Immediate desiccation of the brittle formulation caused retention of hardness and brittleness, whereas after prior humidification, desiccation removed much water but did not reverse the prior transition to ductile response to impact. Measurements were made of water sorption and desorption exhibited by this brittle formulation.
