    Notes: Abstract Light intensity within the range of 40 to 210 μE · m-2 · s-1 had relatively little effect on the abundance, length or distribution of Ceramium rubrum unicellular, hyaline hairs. External NH 4 + concentrations less than 0.5 μM stimulated hair initiation and growth in apical regions of the thalli. Ammonium concentrations in excess of 20 μM inhibited hair formation on all regions of the thalli. Ammonium uptake velocities of plants with hairs were approximately twice those of plants without hairs. These hairs may be adaptive to take advantage of intermittent bursts of nutrients by increasing the plant's surface area and, hence, the number of nutrient uptake sites.

    Notes: Abstract – We studied the effects of catch-and-release fishing upon the Ponoi River's Atlantic salmon populations. The Ponoi River is located on the Kola Peninsula of the Russian Federation, and has recently been developed for sports fishing. Angler exploitation rates are estimated to range from 10.4% to 19% of the river's salmon, thus the possibility of significant levels of post-release mortality is of concern. We radio-tracked fish caught and released by anglers in 1995 and 1996. Despite our simple equipment and the large size of the river, we were able to relocate most fish. These fish had high rates of survival, and anglers recaptured about 11% of them per year a second time. This is very similar to the recapture rates observed for Floy-tagged fish released in an angler-based mark-recapture assessment. We also held 62 angled fish for 24 hours in a live cage to evaluate rates of delayed mortality. Only one of the 62 fish died, and it was heavily scarred with gillnet marks. Most fish that are fatally stressed by angling die within 24 h (e.g., Booth et al. 1995). In 1996, up to 10% of our Floy-tagged fish were angled and released twice, and about 0.5% were angled and released three times. No significant biases were detected in the post-angling movement patterns of these fish. The multiple captures and lack of movement bias suggest that fish behavior was little altered by the angling experience. Nine fish Floy tagged prior to spawning have been recovered as typical emaciated kelts. Three were killed, and a post mortem exam showed all had spawned. Parr numbers at all monitored sites have been steadily increasing since the advent of catch-and-release fishing. By contrast, parr growth rates are generally unchanged or significantly better./〉

    Notes: The endurance of threespine sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, swimming with pectoral fin locomotion at 20° C in a laboratory flume was measured. Each trial lasted a maximum of 480 min. At a speed of 4 body lengths per sec (L s−1) all fish were still swimming at the end of the trial, but endurance decreased at higher speeds. At speeds of 5 or 6 L s−1 (20–30 cm s−1) a few fish still maintained labriform locomotion for the 480 min. However, at a speed of 7 L s−1 all fish furled their pectoral fins and used body and caudal fin propulsion but fatigued rapidly. During sustained swimming, fish could cover distances of 6 km or more. No significant differences between males and females were found.

    Notes: Over the last decade, goldfish Carassius auratus L., have been introduced into lakes and ponds in the Montreal region. Controlled experiments compared the impact of goldfish in both mud-and gravel-bottomed outdoor pools, with either caged or non-caged vegetation. High levels of turbidity were generated by foraging goldfish in mud pools (P〈0.01). All non-caged submersed plants (Potamogeton) showed extensive grazing damage and all of the unprotected submersed and emergent forms were uprooted. Data from Stoneycroft pond where a feral goldfish population reached 15–17 000 individuals ha-1, confirmed the experimental findings showing goldfish to be benthic herbivores, causing a visible increase in turbidity and decrease in aquatic vegetation. Gut analysis revealed goldfish to have little diet overlap with native amphibians. High turbidity should reduce the success of predators feeding on goldfish, and may decrease the foraging success of other competitors. The sporadic distribution of goldfish in Canada may be linked to site characteristics, specifically the susceptibility of the area to turbidity generation.

    Notes: Animals breeding only once late in life should spend most of the time during their one reproductive season attempting to reproduce. Contrary to this prediction, we found that the individuals of three species of sticklebacks (Pisces: Gasterosteidae) spent very short periods of time on their breeding ground. Tidal flooding of the site controlled patterns of fish immigration and emigration. Inundations early in the breeding season brought in new immigrants which replaced most resident fish. However, towards the end of the breeding season there was less immigration and a higher percentage of the residents remained in their pools. We expected to see movements among pools by surplus males searching for sites to establish a territory; instead, few fish moved among pools, and most of those that did were females. A high energetic cost of breeding in this unstable habitat may best explain these residency patterns.

    Notes: An experiment to induce anadromy in a population of wild brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, was conducted near Sept-Iles, Quebec, in 1978–1979. Brook trout were captured from the Matamek River, tagged and transported to the Matamek River estuary during late spring and early summer, and allowed free movement between an impassable waterfall 0.7 km upstream and the sea. Fish were recaptured in autumn as they returned to fresh water. Over two years, 34.0% of the released fish were recaptured. Best returns were in the 2+ and 3+ age classes with 38.0 and 62.1% recaptured, respectively. Straying of transplanted fish appeared to be 〈1%. All age classes included sea run brook trout (sea trout) but the largest percentages of sea trout occurred in older fish. Growth was better in sea trout than in fish which did not develop anadromy, presumably a function of an increased food supply at sea. Severe tagging effects stunted growth and probably suppressed anadromy, especially among younger fish. Sexual characteristics of recaptured fish indicated suppressed maturation of gonads in sea trout compared to fish remaining in fresh water and there was a shift to a larger percentage of females in the sea trout. Comparisons between our results and data on other anadromous Salvelinus species underscore the potential for sea-ranching of trout and char as a moderate effort, high yield aquaculture technique.

    Notes: Riviere a la Truite, a tributary of the Moisie River, is probably a focus of Salmincola edwardsii transmission within the system. Differences in prevalence of the copepod on fish between Riviére à la Truite and the main river suggested that up to 41% of anadromous brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, in the Moisie River system overwinter in the tributary. Infected fish were generally less than 200 mm long and copepods were attached almost exclusively to the fins and their bases. The primary site of copepod attachment at low intensities of infection was the adipose fin but at high intensities the dorsal fin was most frequently infected. This displacement in attachment location with increased intensity may result in density-dependent mortality of copepods. Copepods were overdispersed on the host population at each major sampling time and data fit a negative binomial distribution (k ranged from 0.2 to 0.8).

    Notes: Summary We develop a model to explain the evolution of nest raiding by female sticklebacks based on enhanced female reproductive success derived by creating mating opportunities with the male whose nest has been destroyed. Our model depends critically on the shape of the function relating percentage hatch success to the number of eggs in a male's nest, and the probability that the female will later mate with the male whose nest was raided. Raiding by females will be favoured when the number of eggs in the nest is high providing high egg numbers reduces the percentage hatch rate. High probabilities of mating with the male in question also favour raiding. A second model suggests that males cannot reduce the probability of being raided by limiting the number of eggs in the nest. Instead selection should favour their increasing the number of eggs in the nest. Tests of these models are suggested and their relation to other factors which may influence the evolution of cannibalism are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Two closely related species of sticklebacks (Pisces:Gasterosteidae), breeding in the same site at the same time, showed different patterns of egg cannibalism. In Gasterosteus aculeatus the intensity of cannibalism was density-dependent and females were the most important cannibals. In G. wheatlandi cannibalism was not density-dependent and males ate more eggs than females. This study indicates that sex-specific patterns of cannibalism can differ widely between species despite their similar ecology, and it provides evidence inconsistent with a currently popular explanation for egg cannibalism.
