    Notes: Abstract We establish limits on the total radiant energy of solar flares during the period 1980 February – November, using the solar-constant monitor (ACRIM) on board the Solar Maximum Mission. Typical limits amount to 6 × 1029 erg/s for a 32-second integration time, with 5σ statistical significance, for an impulsive emission; for a gradual component, about 4 × 1032 ergs total radiant energy. The limits lie about an order of magnitude higher than the total radiant energy estimated from the various known emission components, suggesting that no heretofore unknown dominant component of flare radiation exists.

    Notes: Abstract Sunspots have an obvious direct effect upon the visible radiant energy falling upon the Earth. We show how to estimate this effect and compare it quantitatively with recent observations of the solar total irradiance (Willson et al., 1981). The sunspots explain about half of the total observed variance of one-day averages. Since the sunspot effect on irradiance produces an asymmetry of the solar radiation, rather than (necessarily) a variation of the total luminosity, we have also estimated the sunspot population on the invisible hemisphere. This extrapolation allows us to estimate the true luminosity deficit produced by sunspots, in a manner that tends toward the correct long-term average value. We find no evidence for instantaneous global re-emission to compensate for the sunspot flux deficit.

    Notes: The mechanism of extraction of rat cytochrome b5 from water into a sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate (AOT) micellar organic phase was studied using protein engineering of surface charged residues. The extraction behavior of native cytochrome b5 and modified proteins with substitutions of the type glutamic acid → lysine at positions 44 (E44K), 56 (E56K), and 92 (E92K), was studied as a function of pH. The results indicate that an important mechanism of extraction is an electrostatic interaction of this protein with the negatively charged surfactant. We demonstrate that it is possible to improve extraction by engineering the protein surface charge, increasing the driving force responsible for the protein transfer to the micellar phase. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Non-aseptic production of biosurfactant from molasses by a mixed culture was investigated in stirred batch reactors. Biosurfactant production was quantified by surface tension reduction, critical micelle dilution (CMD), and emulsification capacity (EC). Biosurfactant production was directly correlated with biomass production, and was improved by pH control and addition of yeast extract. Centrifugation of the whole broth increased emulsifying capacity and reduced surface tension. Acidification of the whole broth increased the emulsification capacity but reduced the apparent biosurfactant concentration (CMD), without affecting the surface tension. The emulsification capacity of the cell-free broth was equivalent to that of a 100 mg/L solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate. The emulsification capacity of the whole broth and cell-free broth were reduced by about 50% at and above NaCl concentrations of 100mM. Preliminary characterization suggests that the biosurfactant activity is primarily associated with one or more protease-sensitive species, released from cells in larger quantities after more vigorous centrifugation. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A novel means of extracting carboxylic acids from aqueous solutions is described which involves the use of a lipolytic enzyme to convert the acid to a more hydrophobic ester. A water-immiscible long-chain alcohol serves both as a reactant in esterifying the acid, and as a solvent for extraction of the ester. Radiochemical tracer studies of the underlying reaction and extraction equilibria established that a low equilibrium concentration of ester (0.04-0.5mM) in the presence of water is counterbalanced by the high distribution coefficient of the ester (220-3380, wt. basis). The net result is a substantial (4- to 15-fold) increase in the apparent distribution coefficient of the acid; 80%-95% of the extracted acid is in the esterified form. The method is applicable to a variety of alcohols and acids.
