Notes: Observations on two maincrop potato cultivar trials have confirmed that there are marked differences between cultivars in susceptibility to tuber damage by slugs. The cultivars recommended by the N.I.A:B. (and Pentland Falcon) may be categorized as follows: least susceptible to slug damage, Pentland Falcon; moderately susceptible, Pentland Dell, Majestic; more susceptible. Record, Pentland Crown, King Edward (both paracrinkle virus free and paracrinkle infected); most susceptible, Ulster Glade and Maris Piper.

Notes: In an insecticide experiment on the control of cabbage root fly on summer cauliflowers, 1,524 root systems were scored for root damage by two methods. Similar conclusions about the effectiveness of the treatments could be drawn by using either method, but one detected very low levels of root damage and distinguished between different levels of severe damage. This method was more time-consuming and costly, and could be done over only a short harvesting period. The second method was simpler, cheaper, and could be used over a prolonged harvesting period, but was less sensitive for low, or very high, levels of root damage.

Notes: Brassica cyst eelworm (Heterodera cruciferae Franklin) was found in 74 out of 99 fields in a random survey of 11 parishes in Bedfordshire. Population densities of up to 25 eggs/g of soil occurred in 70 fields, and denser populations in only four fields. Population densities were greater, and more fields were infested, on farms of less than 50 acres than on larger farms.

Notes: Summary Three species ofIsurgus were found associated with flowering mustard plants at Trumpington, Cambridge, during late May and June.I. morionellus Holmgren, constituted 80% of the adult parasite population in 1960, and 74% in 1961. The remainder were mainlyI. heterocerus Thomson, with very small numbers ofIsurgus species C andDiospilus capito Nees (Hymenoptera, Braconidae). Dieldrin or DDT sprays severely reduced parasitism of the larvae of blossom beetles (Meligethes aeneus F.); sometimes no parasitised larvae were found after spraying, but in such cases there were only small numbers of blossom beetle larvae present.
