    Notes: Observations on two maincrop potato cultivar trials have confirmed that there are marked differences between cultivars in susceptibility to tuber damage by slugs. The cultivars recommended by the N.I.A:B. Wird die Methode mit einem Natriumkarbonat-Auflöseverfahren kombiniert, so ist es möglich, den gutgeordneten Gibbsit von schlechter geordneten aluminiumhaltigen Verbindungen zu unterscheiden.
    Notes: Abstract Precision differential thermal analysis (DTA) equipment provides a sensitive and accurate means of detecting and estimating gibbsite in soil clays. A combination of DTA and sodium carbonate dissolution procedures enables well-ordered gibbsite to be distinguished from poorly-ordered aluminous material.

    Notes: Summary AIDS-related cholangiopathy is an increasingly recognized syndrome associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The mechanism of cholangiopathy is unknown but is assumed to be related to infectious pathogens such as CMV and cryptosporidia. The case of a Haitian with HIV and longstanding intestinal cryptosporidiosis who presented with cholangitis and protuberant intrabiliary filling defects is reported. Histopathological examination of biliary biopsies revealed previously unreported extensive squamous metaplasia of the bile duct epithelium, and the histogenesis of this condition is discussed. Chronic cryptosporidial infestation may be directly pathogenic resulting in squamous metaplasia that mimics biliary malignancy.

    Notes: Abstract A stable galaxy, if excited above its ground state, oscillates about that ground state. If it is reasonably robust, it can support oscillations of large amplitude. Normal mode oscillations, with surprisingly large amplitudes, have been seen in numerical experiments. Observational evidence shows that real galaxies also oscillate. Galaxies ring like a bell in the experiments, and ringing continues undamped long after initial transients have died out. Their total kinetic energy oscillates with an amplitude as large as 10% of the mean. A fundamental mode dominates. It is an homologous expansion/contraction of the entire galaxy (no nodes). Inward or outward velocities due to this mode are sufficiently large in the outer reaches of a galaxy to account for kinematic warps in observed velocity fields. A second spherically symmetrical mode has one node and is important near the center of the galaxy. It may be the driving force behind bulges in spiral galaxies. Two other normal modes have been identified as well. This appears to be the first experimental demonstration of normal mode oscillations within stable galaxy models.

    Notes: Abstract Proteins have been successfully extracted from the fossil vertebra of a 150-million-year-old sauropod dinosaur (“Seismosaurus”) recently excavated from the Morrison Formation of New Mexico. HCl and guanidine·HCl extracts of the fossil bone and its sandstone matrix were concentrated, demineralized, and resolved into a number of different protein fractions by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). One of these fractions had the same retention time as collagen. Amino acid analysis (Pico-Tag method) of these fractions confirmed they were proteins. Comparison of the correlation coefficients of the amino acid analyses with that of collagen standards indicated that none of the fractions contained significant amounts of collagen. Similar HPLC profiles were obtained for the HCl extracts of fossil bone and its sandstone matrix suggesting they contained the same proteins. However, different HPLC profiles were obtained when these HCl extracts were dried and reextracted with guanidine·HCl. These different fractions represent proteins unique to the fossil and were not found in the sandstone matrix. These differences were confirmed by amino acid analysis. Such information on fossil bone proteins might provide useful knowledge concerning the evolution of skeletal molecules and the fossilization process. Similar information on the proteins from the geological matrix might provide useful fingerprints for reconstructing ancient environments and for assessing sedimentary rocks for fossil fuel exploration.
