Notes: Abstract Translocation of 14C-labelled assimilates down the petioles was studied in intact plants of Pelargonium zonale (L.) L'Hérit ex Ait. The central bundle of the petiole was dissected out and treated with solutions of various inhibitors. Whereas cytochalasin B had no effect on 14C-translocation, a distinct and localized inhibition was caused by CCCP (10-7 M), antimycin (5×10-5 M), atractylate (5×10-5 M), and valinomycin (10-5 M) without any significant change in the proportion of [14C]sucrose in the translocate. The inhibition of translocation is inferred both by accumulation of 14C distal to and a decrease in 14C concentration basal to the treated petiolar region. If valinomycin was fed into the transpiration stream by flapping the peripheral bundles of the petioles an increased labeling of sugar phosphates occurred in the 14C fed leaf. Plasmolysis tests indicated that whereas CCCP interfered with the semipermeability of phloem cell membranes, valinomycin had no such effect. The results with valinomycin suggest a compartmentation of potassium ions for the translocation process but are ambiguous as to whether or not a potassium pump is involved.

Notes: Summary The molecular cloning and nucleotide sequence of elements from potato and pepper that are related to the recently identified Tst1 element are described. Sequence analysis reveals considerable conservation of sequences internal to both the Tst1 element and two of the related elements identified here. In six potato clones analysed, the II by inverted repeat first identified in the Tst1 element is conserved. Several of the elements are flanked by an 8 by direct repeat. DNA fragments which were amplified from several pepper genomes by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification using the inverted repeat as sequence primers also display considerable conservation of sequences internal to the Tst1 element. These data further support the possibility that Tst1 is a non-autonomous transposable element and that Tst1 might be the first example of a transposable element which occurs in several genera of solanaceous plants.

Notes: A New Method for the Degradation of Anthocyanidins, Flavones, Chalcones, and CoumarinsAfter transformation into the corresponding chalcone or flavenol acetates anthocyanidins are oxidatively cleaved with ruthenium tetroxide to yield benzoic acid derivatives of the rings A and B. Flavones, chalcones, and coumarins are degradated by the same method.

Description / Table of Contents: Thermal Decomposition of Pentacarbonyl Iron in Faujasite-Type ZeolitesThe nature of the iron species resulting from the title reaction has been elucidated by thermogravimetry, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, Mössbauer spectrometry, and by normal analytical methods. The thermal decomposition of Fe(CO)5 adsorbed in Y-type zeolite yields pure α-Fe. In X-type zeolite Fe(CO)5 is converted into a highly dispersed form of iron, into iron-subcarbonyl, and into high-spin FeII, occupying different sites of the lattice. Dealuminized zeolites adsorb Fe(CO)5 reversibly. The estimated size of the iron(III) oxide particles formed by air oxidation is in accordance with the assumption that Fe(CO)5 decomposes in Y-type zeolite with iron migrating to the surface of the zeolite crystals, whereas in X-type zeolite the iron remains inside the zeolite cavities.
