    Notes: A radioimmunoassay for Staphylococcus enterotoxin using Staphylococcus aureus cells containing protein A has already been developed. This technique has been employed in our laboratory to detect staphylococcal enterotoxins A and B in six different food materials. Food constituents that interfere with solid state radioimmunoassays do not affect this free solution method to the same extent. The protein A procedure may be used to generate a single representative standard curve, from which toxin levels in other foods may be quantitated. The sensitivity of this assay is 0.1 ng/ml for enterotoxin A and 0.5 ng/ml for enterotoxin B.

    Notes: Abstract The culture unit described was designed to provide a method whereby the experimental condition of the substrate solution can be maintained or manipulated while retaining the axenic integrity of the system. The culture unit was equipped with a modified polypropylene lid allowing entry and exit of treatment solutions that had been previously sterilized. Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) inoculated by Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker and Couch was grown axenically for up to six months in this culture unit system. Growth of roots and mycorrhizal morphology in this system were similar to those observed in other systems.

    Notes: Enzymes subjected to shearing in a viscometer are partially inactivated. It is possible with viscometry to calculate the degree of inactivation that occura when an enzyme solution flows through a capillary tube. When shear rate × exposure time is less than 104, there is little or no inactivation.The masa average shear-rate × time or shear, for laminar flow in a cylindrical tube is simply 16L/3D. It is surprising that for a single pass through a tube, the masa average shear is independent of flow rate and shear rate.
