Notes: Three cases of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis are reported. Two patients came from Vietnam and the third from Greece. In all cases there was infection with Yersinia enterocolitica of serogroup 9 or 3. Cervical lymph nodes were examined. Histologically, the characteristic necrosis developed in large foci of so-called T-associated plasma cells. Immunological analysis showed that these cells have characteristic markers of helper/inducer T cells, but do not express sheep erythrocyte receptors. The T-associated plasma cells perished by pyknosis and were then phagocytosed and digested by macrophages, which were present in large numbers. The necrotic areas were exclusively located in hyperplastic T regions. The B-cell system did not play a role in the reaction. T-associated plasma cells have been renamed ‘plasmacytoid T cells’ because they contain abundant rough endo-plasmic reticulum (‘plasmacytoid’) and show immunological features of T cells. It appears likely that plasmacytoid T cells are the counterparts of plasma cells of the B-cell system that secrete lymphokines instead of immunoglobulin.

Notes: Summary The auricular lymph nodes of SPF guinea pigs were examined light microscopically at various stages (30 min to 14 days) after subcutaneous injection of Listeria monocytogenes. The bacteria entered the lymph node parenchyma through the marginal sinuses and were phagocytosed by polymorphonuclear leukocytes and monocytes at early stages of the infection (30–60 min). Whereas retothelial cells of the sinuses did not phagocytose bacteria, submarginal reticulum cells showed a high bacterium-phagocytosing activity. Starting at 12 hours after inoculation lymphocyte activation occurred in the interfollicular diffuse lymphatic tissue of the cortex and in the paracortex. The activated lymphocytes were released into the sinuses. There was also paracortical distension, which reached its peak on the 6th day of infection. The submarginal area at the junction of the afferent lymphatic with the cortex and the perivascular regions of the lymph node paracortex were the preferred sites of granuloma formation. On the 8th day with a dose of 106 bacteria the macrophages of the granulomas revealed only unidentifiable debris in the cytoplasm, whereas in the earlier lesions a large number of mononuclear phagocytes, especially in the submarginal granulomas, contained many intracytoplasmic listeria. The granulomas gradually became smaller and smaller. With larger infectual doses the process did not subside within the experimental period; the granulomas developed the appearance of “reticulocytäre abszedierende Lymphadenitis”.

Notes: Summary Studies to detect disorders of pulmonary function were performed on 42 workers at a poultry farm. All the subjects were exposed to organic dusts and sensitised to poultry antigens. Typical signs of bird fancier's lung were recorded in two of them. Included in all examinations were immunological diagnosis by means of counter-immunoelectrophoresis, systematic interviewing for case histories, and registration of respiratory symptoms. Pulmonary function was recorded by means of the following techniques: analysis of ventilation (flow-volume indices), respiratory mechanics of the larger airways and lung (body box plethysmography, oesophago-balloon technique), respiratory mechanics of the small airways (closing volume), distributional analysis, diffusion analysis, and blood gas analysis. A disorder of pulmonary function was recordable in 40 sensitised individuals. Such disorder being characterised by obstruction of the larger airways and slight inhomogeneity. The small airways were not narrowed. No restriction nor disturbed diffusion were established. The severity of obstruction was found to be related to the degree of sensitisation. The following more clearly pronounced changes in terms of functional diagnosis were recordable from two poultry workers with allergic alveolitis: obstruction of larger airways with concomitant restriction, marked inhomogeneity, and disorder of diffusion. The disorders, relatively discrete, led to mild PO2-reduction in sensitised individuals, whereas mild hypoxaemia was recorded from subjects with allergic alveolitis.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In seven hunting districts of Schleswig-Holstein the sera of 208 bagged, outwardly healthy hares were tested for antibodies against Treponema spec. using the Treponema Hemagglutination Test (TPHA-Test, Fujirebio Inc., Tokyo). A result similar to that of a study from the Netherlands 59.6% of the animals were seroactive. Major differences in seroprevalence were found among the different hunting districts (39.3% to 76%) as well as between the age groups older (76.4%) and younger (35.3%) than seven months (Tab.). The age groups were determined according to the presence of the Stroh marking. No evidence was found for the influence of Treponema infections on population size and density of the brown hares, since even in hunting districts with a high seroprevalence good hunting bags for this species have been recorded over many years.
