    Notes: Abstract Visible and ultraviolet light was employed in a series of refining experiments to reveal the kinetics of photon-enhanced oxidation of silicon. The experimental evidence then gave rise to an electron-active silicon oxidation process involving electron emission from Si into SiO2 moderating the dissociation of molecular oxygen near the interface. Photonicallystimulated oxidation enhancement then straightforwardly derives from an enhanced level of electron emission. This simple model helps to clarify normal dry thermal oxidation growth kinetics, as well as thin oxide rapid growth behavior and the charged-versus-neutral oxidant controversy. Finally, attention is called to the not generally recognized but likely role that secondary electron emission from surfaces may play in moderating the chemistry of various electron, ion and photon beam-induced surface reactions.

    Notes: In response to a 1-W (56.6 W cm−2) laser beam stimulation at 5145 A, oxidation enhancement is found to occur and data are given for Si(111) and Si(100) from 900 to 750 °C. Using a heat transfer calculation, the thermal contribution and the nonthermal or optical contribution to the total enhancement have been separated. Analysis of the data in terms of linear and parabolic rate constants shows that the major effect resides in B rather than in B/A, with differences existing between the (111) and (100) orientations. A theoretical explanation is suggested to account for this behavior.

    Notes: The stroma in dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) stains with trichrome, but is not polarizable (birefi ingeiit. doubly retractile). The usefulness of polarizing neo-plastic stroma as a diagnostic aid in distinguishing DFSP from dermatofibroma and fibromatosis was evaluated. Forty cases of dermatofibroma of all types, 12 cases of dermal fibromatosis, and 15 cases of DFSP were examined. None of the DFSPs contained polarizable collagen, whereas 11 of the 12 (92%) fibromatoses and 35 of the 40 (88%) dermatofibromas did. Of the 5 dermatofibromas that did not polarize, all were composed primarily of round to polyhedral histiocytic cells, including foam cells, frequently surrounding small obliterated capillaries. Although not puthognomonic, the presence of nonpolarizable collagen appears to he an additional histological marker useful in differentiating DFSP from dermatofibroma and fibromatosis.

    Notes: Summary A number of accessions of the three species of diploid wheat, Triticum boeoticum, T. monococcum, and T. urartu, were grown in 50 mol m-3 NaCl+2.5 mol m-3 CaCl2. Sodium accumulation in the leaves was low and potassium concentrations remained high. This was not the case in T. durum grown under the same conditions, and indicates the presence in diploid wheats of the enhanced K/Na discrimination character which has previously been found in Aegilops squarrosa and hexaploid wheat. None of the accessions of diploid wheat showed poor K/Na discrimination, which suggests that if the A genome of modern tetraploid wheats was derived from a diploid Triticum species, then the enhanced K/Na discrimination character became altered after the formation of the original allopolyploid. Another possibility is that a diploid wheat that did not have the enhanced K/Na discrimination character was involved in the hybridization event which produced tetraploid wheat, and that this diploid is now extinct or has not yet been discovered.
