Notes: The hydrodynamic behaviour of a cocurrent gas-liquid-solid fluidized bed was studied by using the bed collapse technique. The key parameters, k and x, of the generalized wake model were estimated. Compared with other existing methods for evaluating the parameters k and x, the bed collapse technique shows some distinct advantages. Parameters are derived directly from experiments in a three-dimensional three-phase fluidized bed and there is no need to assume that a bubble and its wake form a perfect sphere. Hold-up data of the three-phase fluidized bed predicted by the generalized wake model with k and x estimated by the bed collapse technique are in good agreement with those obtained via the traditional pressure-drop method.

Notes: Based on a comprehensive hydrodynamic analysis, a practical definition of the circulating fluidized bed (CFB) regime has been proposed. It was established that two flow regimes are involved in a CFB: fast fluidization and dense phase conveying. By demonstrating the variation of pressure gradient in both the lower and the upper section of the bed versus superficial gas velocity, the criteria for the determination of transition velocities have been obtained. Literature data which over wider operating conditions, particle properties and bed diameters from the basis of the obtained generalized correlations of transition velocities. A quantitative flow diagram is presented.

Notes: An experimental study on the gas dispersion behaviour of a cocurrent downflow gas-solids suspension in a 140 mm i.d. circulating fluidised bed (CDCFB) using the steady-state tracer method is presented. The influence of gas velocity, solids circulating rate and particle density on radial gas dispersion has been examined. Gas dispersion can well be described by an eddy diffusion mechanism and a proposed two dimensional dispersed plug-flow model can fit the experimental data very well. Correlations of the radial diffusion coefficient were obtained. It is found that the axial diffusion coefficient obtained in the CDCFB is much lower than that in conventional circulating fluidised beds.

Notes: The collapse properties of three kinds of fine particles (19, 30, and 59 μm) are studied with a new type of bed-collapse technique, “isolated dilute-phase bed collapse,” to determine the dense-phase properties under high superficial gas velocities. The properties of the emulsion and bubble phases are investigated by a video camera. The influence of particle size on particle collapse properties is also discussed. When gas velocities are high the 30-μm particles take the longest to collapse, have the smallest emulsion density, and have largest bubble volumetric fraction. These observations indicate that the 30-μm particles have a property that the others lack.

Notes: A new reactive distillation device, the multistage gas/liquid/solid three-phase fluidized bed, has been developed. The flow regimes of the multistage three-phase fluidized bed have been studied and the regimes can be divided into the liquid leakage regime, the dispersed bubble regime, and the coalesced bubble regime. Liquid velocity has a much smaller effect on phase holdups in this device than in conventional three-phase fluidized beds. The three phase fluidized bed is used as a reactive distillation device for the hydrolysis of methyl acetate. Much higher reaction conversion than the equilibrium value and high catalyst-contacting efficiency are obtained. Different methods of feeding the water into the reactive distillation section are studied.

Notes: The radial solids fraction profiles in the inlet region of a high density circulating fluidized bed (HDCFB) are studied by a dual-beam optic density sensor. Three kinds of inlet structures are employed to examine the axial developing process of the profiles. The acceleration effect of solids is analyzed by comparing the cross-sectional average solids fraction obtained by the density sensor and differential pressure method. The results show that the radial solids fraction profile is largely influenced by the inlet structure. The length for the inlet effect region is no more than 1.5 m above the air injection.

Notes: Based on experiments, this paper describes that the vibration energy imported to a packed bed is through the collision between the vibration plate and the bed, and the vibration energy imported to a fluidized bed is through continuous wave propagation. A new type sensor was used to measure the wave signals in VFB. The wave characteristics are affected by bed properties. By analyzing the wave frequency spectrum, the bubble's behavior in the bed can be followed.

Notes: The alkylation reaction of benzene with 1-dodecene was investigated in a liquid-solid circulating fluidized bed reactor (LSCFBR) using HY zeolite as catalyst. The conversion of 1-dodecene, the apparent reaction rate constant, the activity of catalyst and the product distribution in the LSCFBR were analysed and compared with the values obtained using a stirred tank batch reactor (STBR).
