    Notes: The stabilization of organic matter in soil by interaction with aluminium (Al) or allophane is important in maintaining soil quality, and in retarding the decomposition of soil organic matter. Complexation of Al by soil organic matter may also ameliorate Al toxicity. Here we use 13C-NMR spectroscopy to assess the interaction of soil organic matter with both Al and allophane in two poorly drained podzols containing only trace amounts of iron. The 13C-NMR spectrum of the subsoil of the allophane-rich One Tree Point podzol shows an intense peak at 179 p.p.m., assigned to carbon in carboxylic acids. This peak shifts to 177 p.p.m. after removal of allophane (11% of the soil mass) by treatment with HF. We infer that the carboxyl groups in the organic matter are bonded to structural Al on the surface of allophane spherules. In the non-allophanic Te Kopuru podzol, on the other hand, the organic matter apparently interacts with Al ions in the soil solution. This soil also has more aromatic carbon and fewer carbons in carboxyl and carbohydrate structures than the allophanic sample. There is an indication that allophane stabilizes carbohydrate groups as well as carboxyl groups.

    Notes: Allophanic soils are known to accumulate organic matter, but the underlying mechanism is not well understood. Here we have investigated the sorption of humic acid (HA) by an allophanic clay in the presence of varied concentrations of either CaCl2 or NaCl as background electrolytes. Both the HA and the clay were separated from New Zealand soils. Much more HA was sorbed in CaCl2 than in NaCl of the same ionic strength. Apparently Ca2+ ions were more effective than Na+ ions in screening the negative charge on HA. In CaCl2 the HA molecule might also assume a more compact configuration than in NaCl. In the presence of CaCl2 sorption increased, reached a maximum, and then declined as the concentration of HA in solution was increased. This behaviour was not observed in NaCl where sorption showed a gradual and steady increase with HA concentration. We propose that ligand exchange occurs between the surface hydroxyl groups of allophane and the carboxylate groups of HA. As a result, the allophane–HA complex acquires negative charges, requiring the co-sorption of extraneous cations (Ca2+ or Na+) for charge balance. The Ca2+ co-sorbed can attract more HA to the complex possibly by a cation-bridging mechanism, giving rise to a maximum in sorption. The decline in sorption beyond the maximum may be ascribed to a decrease in the concentration of free Ca2+ ions through binding to HA molecules in solution. The increase in supernatant pH may be attributed to a ligand exchange reaction between the surface hydroxyls of allophane and the carboxylate groups of HA, and proton binding to the allophane–HA complex.

    Notes: Plane shock wave experiments were carried out on ammonium perchlorate single crystals compressed along [210] and [001] orientations to peak stresses ranging from 1.2 to 6.2 GPa. Quartz gauge and velocity interferometer techniques were used to measure the elastic and plastic shock wave velocities, and stress and particle velocity histories in the shocked samples. The measured Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL) was 0.48±0.09 GPa. Above the HEL and up to about 6 GPa, the data show a clear two-wave structure, indicating an elastic-plastic response. Time-dependent elastic precursor decay and plastic wave ramping are discernable and orientation dependent in the low stress data. However, the orientation dependence of the peak state response is small. Hence, data for both orientations were summarized into a single isotropic, elastic-plastic-stress relaxation model. Reasonable agreement was obtained between the numerical simulations using this model and the measured wave profiles. At a shock stress of about 6 GPa and for the time duration and crystal orientations examined, we did not observe any features that may be identified as a sustained chemical reaction or a phase transformation. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Compression and shear wave experiments using plate impact loading were conducted on polycrystalline silicon carbide (SiC). The material was subjected to combined compression-shear loading to peak compressive stresses ranging from 3 to 18 GPa. The compression (shock) wave profiles and the propagation velocities of shear and longitudinal release waves in the shocked SiC were measured using in situ, electromagnetic velocity gauges. The Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL) of the material was found to be 11.5±0.4 GPa. The measured wave velocities were used to determine the elastic moduli of the material as functions of density compression in the shocked state. The data were further analyzed to obtain the mean stress response of the SiC under uniaxial-strain compression. The longitudinal and mean stress results completely characterize the material stress state. Numerical simulations were also carried out to verify the peak-state data analysis. Our results show that the Poisson's ratio of the material increases with elastic shock compression from an ambient value of 0.161 to 0.192 at the HEL. Above the elastic limit, the maximum shear stress supported by the material increases from 4.5 to 6.4 GPa at a peak stress of 18 GPa. This finding verifies independently the results from lateral manganin gauge measurements in the same material [R. Feng et al., J. Appl. Phys. 83, 79 (1998)]. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The nit-4 genes of three conventional Neurospora crassa mutations and of the closely related species, Neurospora intermedia, have been isolated by amplifying the genomic DNA with the polymerase chain reaction. Nucleotide sequencing has revealed that the three nit-4 mutants, alleles 15,1214, and 2994, are the result of a missense mutation, a nonsense mutation and a frameshift mutation, respectively. The nucleotide sequence of the NIT4 protein coding region of a nit-4 mutant (allele 2994) and of N. intermedia have been determined and compared with that of wild-type N. crassa. The molecular characteristics confirm that the mutated gene of 2994 originated from N. intermedia and was introgressed into N. crassa. The polyglutamine domains of the N. crassa wild type, the 2994 mutant, or N. intermedia cannot replace an upstream glutamine-rich domain which is essential for nit-4 function.

    Notes: Abstract A rotational band of160Lu was identified for the first time through the144Sm(19F,3n)160Lu reaction with a beam energy of 90 MeV. A γ-γ-BGO coincidence experiment was performed using five HpGe-BGO Compton-Suppressed spectrometers and a 14 elements ball of BGO detectors. The highest spin of the band with π9/2−[514]⊗v1/2+[660] could be pushed up to 21−, and it shows the feature of an anomalous signature splitting.

    Notes: Abstract The high-spin states in197Bi have been studied with the187Re(16O, 6n)197Bi reaction at16O energies between 85 and 105 MeV. In-beam measurements ofγ-ray excitation functions,γ-γ-t coincidences and γray angular distributions were carried out with 6 BGO(AC) HPGe detectors and one intrinsic Ge planar detector. 11 new transitions and 3 new isomers at 2089, 2357 and 1968+Δ keV with t1/2 =19.3±4.9, 53.4±20.5 and 18.0±3.1 ns., respectively, were observed, and a level scheme is established. Some differences between the present work and the previous results were found.
