Notes: A nonequilibrium phase transformation in stoichiometric Ni3Sn2 during mechanical impact in a high-energy ball mill was monitored by the measurements of high-field magnetization, ac susceptibility, and x-ray diffraction. X-ray diffraction showed that the material transformed from the low-temperature Ni3Sn2 phase with Ni3Sn2-type orthorhombic structure to the high-temperature Ni3Sn2 phase with partially filled-up B8-type structure after 40 h of milling. Quenching was used to confirm the phase transformation during ball milling. The magnetization of the ball-milled high-temperature phase (metastable) is much higher than that of the quenched high-temperature phase, where both ball-milled and quenched high-temperature phases have higher magnetization than the low-temperature phase. The Curie temperature of our metastable high-temperature phase is quite close to that of the equilibrium phases (high- and low-temperature phases). The result is discussed in terms of atomic disordering induced by mechanical milling.

Notes: The plasma maser effect in the existence of enhanced kinetic Alfvén wave turbulence is investigated as the generation mechanism of the whistler turbulence at the magnetopause. The numerical results of the growth rate show that on the scale of neither the ion inertial length nor the electron inertial length, the whistler waves can be excited, and the peak of the maximum growth rate occurs on the scale of the effective ion Larmor radius. The kinetic Alfvén wave dynamics associated with the scale length of the effective ion Larmor radius is intrinsically important in the magnetic reconnection and leads to the generation of whistler turbulence. The theoretical model of the generation of whistler turbulence is useful for explaining the observations of intense electromagnetic fluctuations at the magnetopause. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We describe a sensitive polarimeter for measuring optical rotation induced by chiral molecules in solution that operates in the reflectance mode. A polarized light beam is made to pass through a liquid sample two or more times before detection by reflecting the beam from the surface of the sample container. The optical activity of the sample is measured using a differential polarization detector. Our results show that, for certain initial polarization states and angular orientations of the beam with respect to the glass interfaces, high sensitivity to changes in the concentration of the sample can be achieved. Results of a theoretical analysis of the technique were confirmed by experiments in which optical rotation of glucose in water was measured using a simple apparatus that employs a light-emitting diode source. Glucose sensing in vivo and on-line monitoring of industrial processes using integrated optoelectronic sensors are discussed as potential applications.

Notes: A hysteresis loop tracer to measure the ac magnetization of high-Tc superconductors in the frequency range of 30 Hz–10 kHz is described, with driving field amplitudes up to 0.1 T. Due to the high frequency of the magnetic field, the hysteresis loops could be displayed on an oscilloscope and their details could be observed. The demagnetization factor, the stability, and the frequency characteristics of the tracer were tested. The ac magnetization of granular high-Tc superconductors was studied as a function of field amplitude and frequency. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The Qinling–Dabie accretionary fold belt in east-central China represents the E–W trending suture zone between the Sino-Korean and Yangtze cratons. A portion of the accretionary complex exposed in northern Hubei Province contains a high-pressure/low-temperature metamorphic sequence progressively metamorphosed from the blueschist through greenschist to epidote–amphibolite/eclogite facies. The ‘Hongan metamorphic belt’can be divided into three metamorphic zones, based on progressive changes in mineral assemblages: Zone I, in the south, is characterized by transitional blueschist–greenschist facies; Zone II is characterized by greenschist facies; Zone III, in the northernmost portion of the belt, is characterized by eclogite and epidote–amphibolite facies sequences. Changes in amphibole compositions from south to north as well as the appearance of increasingly higher pressure mineral assemblages toward the north document differences in metamorphic P–T conditions during formation of this belt. Preliminary P–T estimates for Zone I metamorphism are 5–7 kbar, 350–450°C; estimates for Zone III eclogites are 10–22 kbar, 500 ± 50°C.The petrographic, chemical and structural characteristics of this metamorphic belt indicate its evolution in a northward-dipping subduction zone and subsequent uplift prior to and during the final collision between the Sino-Korean and Yangtze cratons.

Notes: Mechanical milling of the ordered L12-Ni3Al was performed in a high-energy ball mill. The milling process was monitored by x-ray diffraction, high-field magnetization, ac magnetic susceptibility, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that antisite disorder is generated in the early stages of milling and a phase transformation from the disordered L12 compound to the disordered fcc solid solution of Al in Ni was observed after milling for long periods. Partial amorphization occurs after prolonged periods of milling. The long-range-order parameter decreases monotonously with time in the early stages of milling and attains a zero value after relatively short periods of milling. The lattice parameter and the relative strain increase with milling time. Magnetic properties of ball-milled Ni3Al at 4.2 K differ markedly from those of the ordered state. Based on the magnetic data, it is concluded that short-range disordering could be the third source of energy storage during milling of Ni3Al. Exothermic heat effects resulting from atomic reordering and phase restoration and/or crystallization are evident in the DSC scans of ball-milled Ni3Al. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report on the results of small angle x-ray scattering and high resolution electron micrograph studies which reveal the structure of hydrothermally prepared porous silicon that emits blue light under photoexcitation. Our results constitute direct evidence that blue photoluminescence porous silicon includes high density silicon quantum dots. We show that these quantum dots are isolatedly dispersed in each amorphous SiO2 linear column standing freely on the silicon substrate. The size of individual quantum dots is about 2 nm. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
