Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary.  Ethoxymethylenemalononitrile and bis(methylthio)methylenemalononitrile were condensed with hydrazine hydrate to yield 5-aminopyrazole-4-carbonitrile (3a) and 5-amino-3-methylthiopyrazole-4-carbonitrile (3b), respectively. These compounds were treated with nitrous acid and coupled with different secondary amines to yield the triazenopyrazoles 4a–j. 5-(3,3-Diethyl-1-triazeno)pyrazole-4-carbonitrile (4c) was transferred into its two regioisomeric 2-deoxyribose nucleosides 5a,b which were subsequently hydrolyzed with H2O2/OH− to give the corresponding carboxamides 6a,b. All synthesized compounds were tested for biological activity against HIV-1 and herpes simplex virus, but only 4c showed moderate activity against HIV-1 with ED 50=32μM.

Notes: Diazoalkanes react with 2-methyl- and 2-styryl-4-thiochromones to yield the 1,3-dithiolanes 1 and/or ethylenes 2-4. The latter are cleaved with thionyl chloride to give the corresponding ketones, while on fusion with sulfur they afford the corresponding thioketones. By condensation with compounds containing active hydrogen, such as malononitrile and ethyl cyanoacetate, the 2-methyl- and 2-styryl-4-thiochromones yield the compounds 5. Oxidation of 2-methyl- and 2-styryl-4-thiochromones was accomplished by yellow mercury(II) oxide as well as with tetrahalo-o-benzoquinones to give the corresponding ketones. The biological activity of some selected compounds prepared during this work has been tested towards Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

Notes: The cellulose thiocarbonate, in the fabric from, was treated first with a freshly prepared ferrous ammonium sulphate (FAS) solution. The sotreated fabric formed, with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS), an effective redox system capable of initiating grafting of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and other vinyl monomers onto the cotton fabric. The effect of the polymerization conditions the polymer criteria, namely, graft yeild, homopolymer, total conversion, and grafting efficiency, was studied. These polymer criteria were found to depend extensively upon concentrations of the Fe2+ ion (activator), NBS (initiator), and MMA; pH of the polymerization medium, and duration and temperature of polymerization. Based on detailed investigation of these factors, the optimal conditions for grafting were as follows: Fe2+, 1 × 10-3 mol/L; NBS, 1 × 10-2 mol/L; MMA, 4%; pH, 2: polymerization time, 150 min; polymerization temperature, 60°C; material/liquor ratio, 1: 100. Under these optimal conditions, the rates of grafting of different vinyl monomers were in the following sequence: methyl methacrylate ≫ methyl acrylate 〉 acrylonitrile. Other vinyl monomers namely, acrylic acid, and methacrylic acid have no ability to be grafted to the cellulosic fabric using the said redox system. A tentative mechanism for the polymerization reaction is suggested. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
