Notes: Abstract This paper reports a case of Caroli's disease confined to the left lobe of the liver that mimicked left portal vein thrombosis on MRI studies because of the very high signal intensity on T1-weighted images of intrahepatic pigmented calculi. The preoperative diagnosis was a cholangiocarcinoma infiltrating the left hepatic bile duct and portal branch. The final macroscopic and histological diagnosis was Caroli's disease of the left liver lobe with wide enlarged left bile duct containing multiple pigmented calculi.

Notes: Summary The properties of the corticospinal fibres which also influence the contralateral lateral reticular nucleus (LRN) were investigated in 16 cats anaesthetised with α-chloralose or N2O/O2. Measurements of conduction velocity by stimulation of pericruciate cortex and cerebral peduncle showed that the corticofugal fibres to the LRN can be divided into fast and slow conducting groups corresponding to the known two classes of corticospinal fibres. Results obtained by stimulation of the spinal cord after degeneration of ascending fibre tracts suggest that the LRN neurones are activated via collaterals from descending fibres, possibly corticospinal or rubrospinal. This circuitry may fulfill the requirements for an internal feedback loop. In particular, the fast pyramidal tract fibres to the LRN appear to constitute a component of a fast positive feedback loop from the motor cortex to the cerebellar nuclei and back to the motor cortex, as discussed by Blomfield and Marr.

Notes: Summary A central network of neurones in the spinal cord has been shown to produce a rhythmic motor output similar to locomotion after suppression of all afferent inflow. The experiments were performed mainly in acute spinal cats (th. 12), which had received DOPA i.v. and the monoamine oxidase inhibitor Nialamide. In some preparations all dorsal roots supplying the spinal cord were transected, in others phasic afferent activity was suppressed by curarization. The activity was recorded as neurograms from nerve filaments or as electromyograms. It is concluded that: 1. alternating activity between flexors and extensors of foot, ankle, knee, and hip of one limb can still occur 2. the duration of the flexor discharges vary less with the cycle duration than the extensor discharges 3. different flexor muscles may retain individual patterns 4. the activity at different joints can be dissociated 5. there is at least one network for each limb 6. the coordination between the two hindlimbs can be alternating as in walking or be more closely spaced as in galloping 7. alternating activity in the ankle remains even when only segments L6, L7 and S1 are intact.

The reaction shows up most clearly at a concentration of 3 103 M formaldehyde (0.0096 per cent solution). At 5 103 M the effect is much weaker. Fig. 1. Control: EAT-cells incubated ...

Notes: Summary: Parts of the lower town of Mycenaean Tiryns, Greece, became devastated and buried 3-5 meters deep during a torrential flood which coincided with a major earthquake at the transition from Late Helladic IIIB2 to Late Helladic IIIC1 (c. 1200 BC). These catastrophes contributed locally to the rapid demise of the Mycenaean civilization which commenced at this chronological boundary. Such a collapse of an early Greek civilization accompanied by a simultaneous earthquake and flood is described by Plato (Timaeus 25D) in the legendary Atlantis account. Plato's report revolves around a war between an ancient Greek civilization and a mighty force abroad, called Atlantis. If the former coincides with Mycenaean Greece, the most obvious candidate for the latter must be Troy. Hence, the thus far inexplicable story of Atlantis might well represent an Egyptian recollection of Troy and the Trojan War, distorted by transmission and translation.

Notes: Summary Cefoperazone was administered to 50 of 139 in-patients suffering from urinary tract infections complicated by underlying diseases such as prostatic adenoma or carcinoma, bladder carcinoma, ureterolithiasis or epididymitis. Only patients with more than 105 colony forming units (cfu)/ml of catheter urine were selected for treatment. Cefoperazone was given as a 30 minute infusion of 2 g every 12 hours for ten days. Urine cultures were performed on Days 3, 6, 9 and 13 (three days after completion of therapy). Controls were made three to five weeks after discharge. The antimicrobial activity of cefoperazone in urine was verified in samples taken at random. Parenteral administration oof cefoperazone produced high urinary antimicrobial activity. Clinical response was satisfactory in more than 75% of the cases. Causative pathogens were eradicated in 84% of the cases three days after therapy was initiated and in all cases after six days. The overall efficacy can be considered as excellent or good in 88% of the patients treated. The cefoperazone therapy was a complete failure in four patients only (8%). In one patient a mild rash was observed on the ninth day of treatment.
