Lithium aluminium hydride reacts readily under mild conditions with the symmetrical thiiranes, epithiotetraphenyl-(2a), epithiotetra-p-tolyl-(2b), epithiotetra-p-anisyl-(2c) ethylenes, and dispiro-(xanthene-9,2′-thiirane-3′,9″-xanthene) 4 to give directly the corresponding ethylenes 3a, 3b, 3c and 5, respectively, in good yields. Thermochromic properties of the ethylenes are discussed. The thiiranes 6 and 8, obtained from the reaction of 1,2-benzoxanthione with 9-diazothioxanthene and di-p-tolyldiazomethane, respectively, are desulfurised by lithium aluminium hydride or copper bronze to give the corresponding ethylenes.
