Notes: Abstract. The bulk of the DNA found at human centromeres is composed of tandemly arranged repeats, the most abundant of which is alpha satellite. Other human centromeric repetitive families have been identified, one of the more recent being gamma satellite. To date, gamma satellite DNAs have been reported at the centromeres of human chromosomes 8 and X. Here, we show that gamma-X satellite DNA is not interspersed with the major DZX1 alpha-X block, but rather is organised as a single array of approximately 40–50 kb on the short-arm side of the alpha satellite domain. This repeat array is absent on two mitotically stable Xq isochromosomes. Furthermore, a related repeat DNA has been identified on the human Y chromosome. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation has localised this satellite DNA to the long arm side of the major DYZ3 alpha-Y domain, outside the region previously defined as that required for mitotic centromere function. Together, these data suggest that while blocks of highly related gamma satellite DNAs are present in the pericentromeric regions of both human sex chromosomes, this repeated DNA is not required for mitotic centromere function.

Notes: We report the first explanation of the novel electrical switching in two-terminal devices based on thin V2O5⋅1.6H2O gel films. The switching is shown to be associated with the existence of a current-induced channel between the contacts. The data demonstrate that the switching between the "on'' and "off'' states of the device is driven by the joule heating of a metal-insulator (MI) transition in the channel material (or filaments in the channel). Resistivity data on the channel exhibit a sharp MI transition at T=334 K which is also the temperature at which the device is observed to stop switching. The signature of the MI transition in the channel is very similar to that observed in VO2(TMI=341 K), suggesting the channel may contain VO2−x conduction paths.

Notes: Ag/Si nanocomposite films were prepared by the radio-frequency magnetron cosputtering method. The fine structure of the plasmon resonance absorption peak was found in film samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicated that the samples were composed of a two-layer structure, which accounted for the structure of the optical absorption spectra. The peak located near 445 nm is the plasmon resonance absorption peak of Ag nanoparticles embedded in a partially oxidized Si matrix. Its intensity decreases with decreasing film thickness and disappears in a very thin sample. The peak located near 380 nm originates from the plasmon resonance absorption of the thoroughly oxidized surface layer of the sample. Its intensity does not change with increasing thickness, but it cannot be observed in the very thick sample. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the properties of an all-solid-state electrochromic (EC) device that can be switched over a useful range of optical transmissions with voltages below 1 V. This switching voltage is smaller than required by other solid-state EC devices reported to date. We attribute the lower-than-normal switching voltage to the use of a thermally evaporated MgF2 thin film as the lithium ion conducting layer. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy studies show that high lithium ion conductivity and low interfacial barriers for lithium exchange with the adjacent electrochromic and ion storage layers make MgF2 a good choice for the ion conductor in EC devices. This reduction in switching voltage is a first step toward powering an EC device by an integrated semitransparent single-junction photovoltaic (PV) cell. In a side-by-side bench test, where the EC device is connected to a semitransparent a-SiC:H PV cell having on open circuit voltage of 0.87 V, a relative transmission change in the EC device of 40% is achieved in less than 60 s. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The development of obliterative bronchiolitis is a common cause for failure of lung allografts. Fibrinogenesis can occur for a number of different reasons but some groups have suggested that cyclosporin A (CsA) and tacrolimus (FK506) have different effects on the cytokines which induce fibrinogenesis. We investigated the effect of tacrolimus and CsA in tissue culture and found that there was indeed a negative effect on human lung small airway epithelial cell proliferation by recombinant transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), which was reversed by anti-TGF-β. The same effect was seen with CsA at immunosuppressive concentrations, which was also reversed by anti-TGF-β, whereas no such inhibition was seen with tacrolimus at immunosuppressive doses unless high concentrations were used. Free TGF-β was confirmed as being elevated in the supernatant of cell culture wells with standard dose CsA as opposed to low dose CsA or tacrolimus using an ELISA assay.

Notes: Abstract Ceramic injection-moulding blends containing 56 vol % fine silicon nitride and 65 vol % coarse silicon powder in a polypropylene and wax vehicle were prepared by dispersive mixing with and without 2 p.p.h. silane coupling agent based on the weight of powder. The addition of silane reduced the viscosity and the pseudoplasticity of the suspensions considerably. The mechanical strength of the moulding compositions, which may influence the tendency to crack during solidification in the cavity, was marginally increased. The treated silicon powder was strongly hydrophobic but this was not the case with the silicon nitride powder.[/p]

Notes: Abstract Morphology and geometry of melted zones, cooling rates, microstructure and microhardness in the laser-glazed Fe-4%C-10%Sn alloy have been investigated. The computer simulation on the basis of the moving gaussian source model was used successfully to predict the maximum width and depth of the melted zone and the cooling rate. The microstructure from the surface to the bottom of the laser-melted zone is a non-crystalline phase, dendritic grains and a microcrystalline zone successively. Values of the averaged-spacing of the non-crystalline phase are 0.2056 and 0.1219nm, respectively; twinned martensites, having an axial ratioc/a of 1.128, existed in dendritic grains, and carbides of Fe3 C at the interdendritic regions; the microcrystalline zone was composed of α-Fe and a new bet (a=0.415 nm,c=0.955 nm) phase. The different microstructure in the melted zone can be explained by the results of the heat flow calculation. A fine eutectic structure (α-Fe + Fe3C) was observed in heat-affected zones. Microhardness of the eutectic structure can be predicted by the empirical relation of fracture stress to the interlamellar spacing of pearlite.

Notes: Abstract The ability to control the sprue solidification time by using modulated pressure was investigated over a wide range of mould temperatures using a silicon nitride suspension. The mould temperature needed for infinite sprue solidification time was reduced from 158 to 75° C by the application of a pressure of 132 MPa modulated at 0.5 Hz. Under similar moulding conditions, macroscopic moulding defects in the hub of a solid rotor were avoided. Such defects were present in all static pressure mouldings. The thermal power input to the sprue resulting from oscillatory flow was estimated.
