Notes: Abstract The contribution of T-, L-, N-, P-, and Q-type Ca2+ channels to pre-and postsynaptic Ca2+ entry during stimulus-induced high neuronal activity in area CA1 of rat hippocampal slices was investigated by measuring the effect of specific blockers on stimulus-induced decreases in extracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]0). [Ca2+]0 was measured with ion-selective electrodes in stratum radiatum (SR) and stratum pyramidale (SP), while Ca2+ entry into neurons was induced with stimulus trains (20 Hz for 10 s) alternately delivered to SR and the alveus, respectively. The [Ca2+]0 decreases recorded in SR in response to SR stimulation represented mainly presynaptic Ca2+ entry (Capre), while [Ca2+]0 decreases recorded in SP in response to alvear stimulation were predominantly based on postsynaptic Ca2+ entry (Capost). Ethosuximide and trimethadione were ineffective m concentrations up to 1 mM. At 10 mM, they reduced Capost and, much less, also Capre Nimodipine (25 μM) reduced Capost and, to a minor extent, Capre. ω-Agatoxin IVA (0.4–1 μM) and ω-conotoxin MVIIC (1 μM) also reduced both Capre and Capost, but with a stronger action on Capre. ω-Conotoxin GVIA (3–8 μM) reduced Capost without effect on Capre. We conclude that during stimulus-induced, high-frequency neuronal activity Capost is carried by P/Q-, N-, and L-type channels and probably a further channel type different from these channels. Capre includes at least P/Q-and possibly L-type channels. N-type channels did not contribute to Capre in our experiments. Since ethosuximide and trimethadione were only effective in high concentrations, their action may be unspecific. Thus, T-type channels do not seem to play a major part in Ca2+ entry in this situation.

Notes: The paper (a) discusses the use of polymers for conditioning alum sludge derived from the coagulation of low turbidity coloured waters, and (b) reviews the factors which control the optimum dosage vis a vis individual test methods such as specific resistance to filtration and capillary suction time. It was demonstrated that good estimates of the solids feed could be obtained via the suspended-solids concentration in the flocculators. An algorithm based on water-quality parameters was recommended for planning purposes. Difficulties arising from variations in the solids delivery to the thickeners were shown to influence the separation efficiency. The paper also includes a survey of polymer routeing within a water-treatment plant in which there was multiple polymer use and extensive recycling; this identified a number of quality-control issues and demonstrated the value of polymer measurement.

Notes: Summary Effect ofN-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) administration on cysteine and glutathione (GSH) contents in rat liver and kidney was studied using intact and diethyl maleate (DEM)-treated rats and perfused rat liver. Cysteine contents increased rapidly, reaching peak at 10 min after intraperitoneal NAC administration. In liver mitochondria it increased slowly, reaching peak at 60 min. GSH content did not change significantly in these tissues. However, in liver and kidney depleted of GSH with DEM, NAC administration restored GSH contents in 60 and 120 min, respectively. Perfusion with 10 mM NAC resulted in 76% increase in liver cysteine content, but not in GSH content. Liver perfusion of DEM-injected rats with 10 mM NAC restored GSH content by 15%. Present findings indicate that NAC is an effective precursor of cysteine in the intact liver and kidney and in the perfused rat liver, and that NAC stimulated GSH synthesis in GSH-depleted tissues.

Notes: Abstract Ti-Al-Cu series burn-resistant alloys are newly developed materials which have low density, low cost and are easy to process. The results show that Ti-Al-Cu alloys have good burn resistance due to their good thermal conductivity, low melting point, and the existence of Ti2Cu phase which also has a very low melting point. Ti-Al-Cu alloys have excellent thermal processability and good room and high temperature tensile properties, but an increase in copper content harms their thermal stability. After thermal exposure for a long time, Ti2Cu phase will coalesce and coarsen, but the addition of Si and Al will be useful for their thermal stability. The Ti-13Cu-1Al-0.2Si alloy has good thermal stability at 540°C and good creep resistance at 300°C and 100 MPa. The phases of Ti-Al-Cu alloys were found to be composed of α phase and Ti2Cu. The character of the Ti2Cu phase changes with the increasing copper content.
