    Notes: Abstract We present the calculation of surface electromagnetic radiation to all orders from a spatially modulated, oscillating dipole layer sandwiched between two dielectric media. The results properly include the macroscopic local field factors. In specular reflection direction, we show that the total radiation is partitioned into a term which is the zeroth-order counterpart to the higher-order diffraction and a term related only to the properties of two adjoining bulk media. The results unify the calculations by Shen and Heinz and McIntyre [1, 6, 7]

    Notes: We report the vibrational and electronic spectra for pyridine and benzene adsorbed on the Rh(111) crystal surface obtained by high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). Low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS), and optical second harmonic generation (SHG) have also been used to provide complementary information. Pyridine adsorption on Rh(111) was studied over the 77–450 K temperature range. At 77 K, multilayers of pyridine are observed with a vibrational spectrum similar to that of liquid pyridine. Between 185 and 230 K, HREELS and TDS indicate that both physisorbed and chemisorbed pyridine species are present on the surface. The physisorbed species desorbs at 295 K, while the chemisorbed species is stable until it decomposes on the surface at 400 K. We propose that the chemisorbed species is an α-pyridyl complex as thermal desorption spectroscopy indicates partial dehydrogenation of this pyridine surface species. Electronic energy loss spectra for both benzene and pyridine adsorbed at 310 K show only a weak transition centered at ∼4 eV. The absence of prominent π→π* transitions, which are readily observed for multilayers of benzene adsorbed on Rh(111), implies that the π orbitals are strongly involved in the chemisorption bond of these molecules with the Rh(111) surface.

    Notes: We demonstrate that the morphology of crystalline surfaces during ion sputtering and thermal annealing can be monitored in situ with an oblique-incidence polarization-modulated optical reflectance difference technique. Such a technique is effective under high ambient pressures as well as ultrahigh vacuum. We studied the Ne ion sputtering and thermal annealing of Ni(111) from 623 to 823 K. We found that the rate-limiting step (with an activation energy of 1.1 eV/atom) during annealing is most likely to be direct evaporation of Ni atoms from step edges. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We describe an oblique-incidence optical transmittance technique for determining the pointing stability of a laser. In this technique, we follow the angular drift of a monochromatic laser beam by measuring the relative changes in transmittance through a parallel fused quartz window for s and p polarized components of the beam in response to the drift. This method is shown in the present experiment to have the sensitivity to detect angular changes in the range of 2 μ radians (1 μ radian=10−6 radian). To demonstrate this technique, we measured the angular drifts of two commercial intensity-stabilized He–Ne lasers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Using an oblique-incidence optical reflectivity difference technique, we investigated kinetic processes in SrTiO3 homoepitaxy on SrTiO3(001) under pulsed-laser deposition conditions. Depending upon growth temperature and oxygen ambient pressure, we found that the oxidation of an as-grown SrTiO3 monolayer may take a much longer time to complete than the recrystallization of the monolayer. The oxidation reaction was found to be characterized by an effective activation energy barrier of 1.35 eV and a large preexponential factor. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We show that it is feasible to produce one- and two-dimensional nano-structure arrays by passing microsecond pulsed atomic beams through microsecond laser standing-wave patterns under completely off-resonant condition. This method enables fabrication of vertically heterogeneous nanostructures such as multilayers with one pulsed laser system. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Using an oblique-incidence optical reflectance difference technique, we study the kinetics of La0.67Ba0.33MnO3−δ (LBMO) epitaxy on SrTiO3(001) during pulsed-laser deposition. By monitoring the recovery of the optical response function from one-monolayer-deposited LBMO, we found that under the conditions studied, the epitaxy was rate limited by the oxidation of the as-deposited monolayer with an activation barrier of 1 eV/atom or 23 kcal/mol. The result reveals the origin of oxygen deficiency often found in manganite thin films. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report the generation of a highly intense, tunable source from 0.67 μm to 2.58 μm by optical parametric generation and amplification in β-barium borate (BBO) pumped by picosecond pulses at 0.532 μm. The maximum conversion efficiency from the pump to the signal is 13%. The output energy is in the range a few hundred μJ.

    Notes: Abstract We discuss the possibility of observing photon echoes in the infrared range from a surface monolayer. Three different detection schemes are considered: direct infrared detection, external up-conversion, and in-situ up-conversion. The external up-conversion scheme appears most promising, while the in-situ up-conversion scheme has the advantage of being highly surface specific. Dephasing relaxations of surface vibrational excitations should be measurable.

    Notes: Abstract We report the detection of linear optical diffraction of a He-Ne laser probe beam from a monolayer grating of molecular adsorbates up to the fifth order with no electronic or electromagnetic enhancement. The advantages of using linear diffraction to probe surface diffusion of adsorbates are discussed.
