Notes: Scalp current density analysis of the auditory evoked response to 1-kHz tone bursts delivered at various interstimulus intervals (ISIs) (from 1 s to 2 min in separate runs) shows that two different frontal components can be observed and functionally dissociated in the N1 time range: one is elicited for all ISIs, peaks at about 95 ms poststimulus, and has a full recovery time below 8 s; the second is elicited only by infrequent stimuli (ISIs 〉 4 s), peaks around 140 ms, and significantly increases in amplitude with increasing ISIs. The first component can be considered a new obligatory component in N1 elicited simultaneously with the responses in auditory cortex; the later component could correspond to the orienting Component III of Näätänen and Picton (1987).

Notes: Abstract Proposed to both the French and the European Space Agency as one possible small mission, SPICE is a project for a dedicated small satellite for a near-IR spectroscopic all-sky survey. The instrument would cover the spectral range 1.8 - 3.6µm, possibly extended to 1.8 - 7µm, at a resolution of ≈ 100, with pixels of 1 arc-min. The excellent sensitivity (0.02 MJy sr-1) results from: i) the quasi-zero level of background due to the efficient passive cooling of the whole experiment; ii) the use of large format arrays; iii) the non-stop observing mode (drift-scanning). The spectral domain, complementing the one of ISO, partially opaque from the ground, is specially rich in spectral features tracing stars and all components of the Interstellar Medium (molecular, atomic and ionized gas, dust). With a cooling below 80 K of the focal instrument, then it becomes possible to consider doubling the spectral domain and to cover the whole 1.8 - 7µm range.

Notes: Abstract We present the development of a correlator module intended for space borne high resolution heterodyne spectroscopy. Our attention has been focused on power consumption reduction (few mW per channel needed), while looking for a high clock frequency (few hundreds of MHz) to cover wide bandwidths. The module proposed, which may be the base of an hybrid analog/digital spectrometer, is composed of two full custom Very Low Scale Integration (VLSI) circuits using two different technologies: a high speed MEtal Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MESFET) on Gallium Arsenide substrate (GaAs) and a low power Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) on Silicon substrate (Si). A 0.8 μm GaAs prototype circuit has been built and tested. It shows a correct global operation up to 242 MHz – and for marginal functions up to 611 MHz –, and a power consumption as expected by the simulations (less than 2 W). Expected improvements of the technology, together with some modifications developed here, demonstrate that a high frequency correlator module, meeting spatial requirements (many hundreds of channels and few mW per resolution point), should be feasible.

Notes: Abstract We present here the French balloon-borne experiment named AROME. This astronomical instrument is specifically designed for the detection of near infrared emission bands (λ=3–12μm) from extended sources of low surface brightness with an angular resolution of 0.5°. The rms sensitivity achieved is of the order of 10-8 Wm-2sr-1, in terms of the power radiated in the 3.3μm band. We recall that this program led to the first detection of the 3.3μm feature in the spectrum of the diffuse galactic emission. The scientific results were presented and interpreted in Paper I, Giard et al., 1989. Future work will include both the observation of fainter objects at 3.3μm and the detection of other emission bands at 6.2 and 11.3μm.

Notes: Conclusion The evolution of the spectral response of Si:Ga photoconductors with uniaxial stress is studied. The cut-off wavenumber is lowered by 14% at a stress of 0.6 GPa, in a spectral range where strong absorption by the lattice occurs. Unstressed Si:Ga detectors have been developed for the AROME instrument focal plane. This experiment was devoted to measure the diffuse near infrared emission of our Galaxy in order to estimate the power radiated in particular spectral bands characteristic to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons. The recent transmediterranean balloon flight gave extensive data which are now being processed.

Notes: Abstract We have designed and built a new, wide band, modulable resolution spectrometer, in view of full astronomical qualifying tests, and to prepare future models for the FIRST satellite's heterodyne instrument. Our spectrometer, a hybrid digital Autocorrelator, offers flexibility in terms of bandwidth (from 170MHz to 680MHz) and resolution (from 700kHz to 3MHz). This spectrometer required the development of a dedicated analog filter bank, homemade samplers, and the design of full custom GaAs integrated circuits. Laboratory tests have shown excellent agreement with expected performances and observations performed with the IRAM 30-m radiotelescope have qualified its capabilities. Despite the relatively limited number of channels of our current prototype compared to others spectrometers, the main advantages are its stability (inherent to digital technique), and its spectral versatility. Recent microelectronics advances and rad-tolerance of our spectrometer components are used to prepare a new, compact, and low power consumption autocorrelator in view of a flight model for HIFI, the heterodyne instrument on the ESA cornerstone mission FIRST.

Notes: Abstract PRONAOS is a balloon-borne system dedicated to astronomical observations in the submillimeter range (180µm - 1050µm) based on the use of a 2m Cassegrain telescope. The primary mirror consists of six CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) panels, each being positioned by three actuators. The rotation angles of the panels have been measured in the visible range with the help of a CCD and digital centroiding techniques that were necessary because of the light scattering on the CFRP mirror. The translation movements (along the optical axis) of the panels have been measured with an interference technique in the submillimeter range. Both visible and submillimeter measurements were also necessary to determine the alignment of the telescope - focal instrument system with the star sensor. The whole alignment process leads to a precision of ±8″ for the rotation angles and ±7µm for the translation of each panel, sufficient for a qualification of the system.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The microprocessor-based system is designed to study the cerebral responses (average evoked potentials) to sensory stimuli, and especially to auditory stimuli in real time. A stimulator with digital commands is controlled by the computer module. Up to eight different kinds of stimulations can be defined by the operator before the experiment. Their order and frequency may be fixed or random. Up to eight e.e.g. channels can be analysed simultaneously. While the data are being processed, the response on one of the eight channels is displayed on the screen of a cathode-ray tube. After the processing, all the responses can be drawn automatically on an analogXY plotting recorder, together with the relevant commentaries. The system also has other functions, such as automated calibration of each e.e.g. channel, checking of the quality of the signals before averaging, automated correction of the baseline shift and the possibility of extracting the short latency evoked-potential responses.
