Notizen: Neutron scattering measurements of the critical fluctuations associated with the spin-density-wave transition at the Néel temperature, TN≈312 K, in a single-Q chromium crystal are reported. Critical fluctuations are observed emanating from allowed magnetic satellite positions and from satellite positions, corresponding to absent magnetic domains, at which no elastic scattering occurs. The inelastic scattering from these "silent satellites'' grows rapidly with increasing temperature, becoming equal to the allowed single-Q satellite scattering at TN. The line shapes of the inelastic scattering at both the allowed and silent satellites are found to be intrinsically asymmetric, reflecting the underlying nesting geometry of the Fermi surface. Energy scans at the silent satellite positions reveal a weakly temperature dependent, characteristic energy below which the observed scattering intensity falls rapidly to zero. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Magnetic exchange coupling in metallic superlattices of [Dy||Er], grown by molecular-beam epitaxy, has been examined by neutron diffraction. In a superlattice of 65-A(ring) layers of Dy and 55-A(ring) layers of Er, distinct ordering temperatures were observed for the Dy and Er layers. Basal plane helical ordering of the Dy layers was initiated at temperatures close to TN for bulk Dy (178 K) with a long-range interaction, preserving both phase and chirality, mediated through the Er layers. At a temperature near 70 K, the helical coupling of the Dy spins is replaced by an antiferromagnetic coupling of adjacent ferromagnetically ordered Dy layers coexisting with a remanent helical order. At a temperature well below TN of bulk Er, c-axis ordering of the Er spins occurs in the superlattice, and in measurements at 10 K there is evidence of basal plane moment ordering in the Er.

Notizen: Chicken pieces were cooked in fresh corn oil and in corn oil previously heated up to 42 hr. Both raw and cooked chicken pieces were also frozen and stored for periods up to 6 months prior to analyses. Phospholipids were separated from muscle and skin, and identified primarily as phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylcholine, sphingomyelin and lysophosphatidylcholine. Total phosphorus content of phospholipids decreased during cooking in fresh corn oil by chemical reactions and/or by rendering fats from muscle. Phosphatidylcholine decreased the most. Use of reheated corn oil accentuated the changes in phospholipids. During frozen storage, phosphorus content of muscle decreased by an amount similar to that which occurred during cooking. Chicken skin contained less total phosphorus than muscle, and increased slightly during the cooking process.

Notizen: Abstract The aim of this experimental study is to investigate the heat (mass) transfer of a rotating disk with an impinging circular jet. To facilitate the experiments, the naphthalene sublimation technique was employed. In order to analyze the results, measurements of the heat (mass) transfer of a stationary disk with an impinging jet and a rotating disk without jet impingement were also made. From the experimental results, it is found that the heat (mass) transfer are precisely divided into three regimes, namely the impingement dominated regime; the mixed regime and the rotation dominated regime. Correlation of Sherwood number of a rotating disk with jet impingement is also proposed in the present work.

Notizen: Abstract We performed a 3-year longitudinal study of a group of 179 healthy Chinese adolescents (92 boys and 87 girls) aged from 12 to 16 years to determine the effects of puberty, physical activity, physical fitness, and calcium intake on the acquisition of bone mass. At yearly intervals for 3 consecutive years we recorded nutrition, calcium intake and anthropometric measurements, and assessed pubertal status according to Tanner. Bone mass of the lumbar spine was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and radial bone mass by single-photon absorptiometry. Physical fitness and level of physical activity were assessed and muscle strength and power determined by isokinetic testing. Peripheral bone mass correlated with axial skeleton bone mass. Age, pubertal staging, physical fitness and muscle strength were significantly associated with bone mass increments on cross-sectional univariate and regression analysis. Longitudinal regression analysis showed that the most important factor affecting bone mass accretion in adolescents in both sexes was their pubertal stage. In boys, bone mass increment throughout the study was greater in children who were already in the advanced pubertal stages on entering the study than in those who started puberty in year 2 or 3 of the study. The percentage change in bone mineral content of the forearm and in bone mineral density of the lumbar spine was greater than 25% in the advanced pubertal group as compared to around 20% in the less mature group. For girls, the reverse was true. The increment of bone mass during the study period was significantly greater in those who presented in the earlier pubertal stages than in those who were at the more advanced stage of puberty on entry into the study. There was no significant effect of calcium intake and physical activities on the bone mass accretion. Conclusion In Chinese adolescents, bone mineral accretion at adolescence is not influenced by exercise, level of physical fitness and calcium intake. In both sexes, and especially in girls, to optimally increase bone mass, regular physical exercise programmes should be instituted well before the onset of puberty rather than at or after it. Once puberty starts, these interventions may have no or only limited effect.

Notizen: Abstract Background: Intracranial pressure (ICP) is known to rise during induced CO2 pneumoperitoneum. This rise correlates with an increase in inferior vena caval pressure; therefore, it is probably associated with increased pressure in the lumbar venous plexus. Branches of this plexus communicate with arachnoid villi in the lumbar cistern and the dural sleeves of spinal nerve roots—areas where cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) absorption to normally takes place. The increased venous pressure in this area may impede CSF absorption. Because CSF is produced at a constant rate, decreased absorption will increase ICP. We hypothesized that increased ICP occurring during abdominal insufflation is due, at least in part, to decreased absorption of CSF. The purpose of this study is to show that CSF absorption is inhibited during abdominal insufflation. Methods: After appropriate approval was obtained, 16 domestic swine were anesthetized and injected into the CSF with 100 microcuries (μCu) of I131 radioactive iodinated human serum albumin (RISA) in 2 ml of normal saline. Eight subjects underwent CO2 abdominal insufflation to 15 mmHg and were maintained for 4 h. A control group did not undergo insufflation. Blood levels of RISA were measured over a 4-h period to determine the rate of CSF absorption. Results: Blood levels of RISA increased at a slower rate in the subjects undergoing abdominal insufflation than in the control group. The mean change over 2 h in the insufflated group was 15% compared to 34% in the control group (p= 0.02). This difference indicates decreased absorption of CSF in the insufflated group. Conclusions: These results demonstrate decreased absorption of CSF during abdominal insufflation and support the hypothesis that the increase in ICP pressure occurring during abdominal insufflation is caused, at least in part, by decreased absorption of CSF in the region of the lumbar cistern and the dural sleeves of spinal nerve roots.
