Notizen: Cr(backward-slash)(CoPtCr,CoPt) films were deposited on oxidized Si 〈100〉 substrates via dc magnetron sputtering. Process parameters, such as deposition rates, number of bilayers, and bias voltage, were varied to achieve the hard magnetic properties without thermal processing of the films. Coercivities in the range of 2000 Oe, with corresponding squareness of about 0.8–0.9, and remanent magnetization in the range (3–3.6) memu/cm3, were achieved by identification of the optimum conditions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Metalorganic molecular beam epitaxy (MOMBE) growth characteristics of GaAs using triethylgallium (TEGa) and trisdimethylaminoarsenic (TDMAAs) are studied in detail by using reflection high energy electron diffraction intensity oscillations. It is found that the GaAs growth rate variation with substrate temperature (Tsub) is similar to that in the MOMBE growth of GaAs with TEGa and elemental As (As4) except in the high Tsub region, despite the use of uncracked TDMAAs instead of As4. GaAs growth starts at about 350 °C and shows a maximum growth rate at about 500 °C. However, the absolute growth rate is about 15% lower than that using As4 with the same TEGa flow rate in the mass-transport limited growth region. Above 600 °C the growth rate shows a rapid decrease with increasing Tsub. Further, it is found that etching of GaAs occurs when only TDMAAs is supplied to the GaAs surface at Tsub above 500 °C. Unintentionally doped GaAs films show n-type conduction in the whole Tsub range investigated with the highest 77 K electron mobility of 22 000 cm2/V s and a low carrier concentration of 2×1015 cm−3 for the 650 °C grown samples. 4.2 K photoluminescence spectra show an exciton-bound-to-impurity emission peak at the wavelength of 819.3 nm with a full width at half-maximum of less than 3.5 meV indicating good optical qualities. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The rotational motion of homonuclear diatomic molecules confined to two dimensions at finite temperatures is discussed within the framework of path-integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) techniques. For single rotators the symmetry restriction on the total wave function coupling nuclear spin and rotations of these diatomic molecules is carried over to PIMC for fermionic and bosonic diatomic molecules. Three experimentally relevant quantum statistical averages are formulated, and quantum effects due to discrete level spacing and exchange are separated with the help of these averages. The method is applied to single N2 and H2 rotators adsorbed on graphite in the frozen-in crystal field which is due to the commensurate ((square root of)3×(square root of)3)R30° "2-in'' herringbone phase. Contrary to H2, exchange effects are negligible for N2 in the relevant temperature range. The resulting sign problem for certain combinations of molecule and averaging procedure is discussed. PIMC simulations of the phase transition from the translationally (square root of)3-ordered and orientationally disordered phase to the herringbone phase were carried out for complete N2 monolayers without a symmetry restriction on the wave function. Due to dispersive quantum fluctuations, transition temperature and ground-state order parameter are depressed by roughly 10% as compared to classical MC simulations of the same realistic model. In addition, the PIMC results are compared to quasiharmonic and quasiclassical approximations. The quasiharmonic treatment yields the correct order parameter suppression, the quasiclassical simulation the lowering of the transition temperature, but only the full quantum PIMC simulations describe the entire temperature range of interest correctly.

Notizen: Metal-organic molecular-beam epitaxy growth of GaSb is investigated for the first time by using the new precursor trisdimethylaminoantimony (TDMASb) together with triethylgallium (TEGa). An etching effect is observed when TDMASb is supplied to the (001) GaSb surface without precracking. The etching rate is dependent on the substrate temperature and TDMASb flow rate, while independent of the TEGa flow rate. GaSb layers can be grown when the TDMASb is precracked in the gas cracker cell. The etching mechanism is discussed in connection with the decomposition process of TDMASb on the surface.

Notizen: Based on path-integral Monte Carlo simulations we investigate systematically the influence of quantum fluctuations on a model for orientational ordering. The quantum anisotropic-planar-rotor Hamiltonian with its herringbone ground state serves as our model for strictly two-dimensional, orientationally ordered linear molecules. We find several distinct regimes as the strength of the quantum fluctuations is increased: (i) a regime with renormalized transition temperature and ground state order parameter which describes systems like N2 physisorbed on graphite; (ii) crossover behavior with residual ground state order but an increased order parameter at higher temperatures; (iii) a regime characterized by vanishing ground state order but significant order in some range of higher temperatures; and (iv) a regime with orientational disorder at all temperatures. This sequence is interpreted in terms of reentrant rotational quantum melting. In addition we probe the range of validity of simple approximation schemes such as the quasiharmonic and the quadratic Feynman–Hibbs effective potential approximations. Both methods fail to describe the full scenario for large quantum fluctuations even on a qualitative level. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: : Streamflow data for water years 1978–84 were evaluated to identify streamflow characteristics for 13 small watersheds (0.46–7.00 mi2) in the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon and to determine differences among grazing intensities and vegetation types. The ranges for mean annual water yields, peak flows, and 7-day low flows for the 13 watersheds were 5.5–28.1 inches, 2.0–34.7 cfsm, and 0.006–0.165 cfsm, respectively. Two classes of vegetation were evaluated: (1) western larch-Douglas-fir (nine watersheds) and (2) other (four watersheds representing fir-spruce, lodgepole pine, ponderosa pine, and mountain meadow). The means for annual peak flows and the slopes of the flow.duration curve were significantly different (p=0.05) for the two vegetation classes; differences in mean annual water yield were marginallysignificant(0.05〈 p 〈0.10). After they were adjusted for precipitation, the means for annual water yield, peak flows, and slopes of the flow-duration curve were significantly different for the two vegetation classes; differences in the means for annual 7-day low flows were marginally significant. The western larch-Douglas-fir group had somewhat lower water yields but, overall, tended to have more favorable streamfiow characteristics including lower peak flows, higher low flows, and more evenly distributed flow regimes (flatter flow-duration curves) than the “other” class. Four levels of grazing intensity had no effect on streamilow characteristics.

Notizen: Peaches (Prunus persica L. Batsch) were sampled during the early harvest season to determine the percentage of immature fruits harvested in commercial orchards. The results indicated that the earlier the harvest, the higher the percentage of immature fruits (24%). Six days after the harvest season started, the percentage of immature fruits stabilized to 13%. Removal of immature fruits decreased acidity, increased soluble solid/acidity ratio but did not affect soluble solids content in peach puree. Color was improved by the removal of immature fruits in the cultivar (cv) Baby Gold 5, but no effect was noted in Allgold; puree of the cv Baby Gold 7 showed an improvement in color in 1989 but no effect in 1988.
