    Notizen: Silica glasses were repeatedly densified by multiple shock reverberations in stainless-steel capsules. The limit of increase in density was about 2.47 Mg/m3 after the first shock loading. Further increase in density was observed after duplicate shock loading, but limited at about 2.55 Mg/m3. Triplicate shock loading was not so effective for the increase in density. The Raman spectra of recovered silica glasses had characteristics of densified silica glass with much higher density. The remarkable one was the enhancement of the line at 605 cm−1 called the D2 line, which was one of two narrow lines peculiar to the Raman spectrum of silica glass. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Spectrally narrow outputs of about 10 MHz (full width at half-maximum) are obtained from an optically pumped high-power (100 kW) D2O laser system by using the oscillator-amplifier configuration, in which a low-power single-mode output from a compact D2O laser with a short cavity length is amplified by a large D2O laser amplifier. In order to obtain spectrally narrow outputs from the amplifier, the following three conditions need to be satisfied: (1) the D2O gas pressure of the amplifier is adjusted in the range from 4 to 6 Torr; (2) the oscillation frequency of the compact laser is tuned in the range about 15–35 MHz lower than the Raman resonance frequency; and (3) the intensity of the compact laser beam injected into the amplifier is larger than about 50 W/cm2. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The poloidal magnetic field was measured to detect the plasma boundary position. It was found that the pressure-induced plasma shift, an observable characteristic of the Pfirsch–Schlüter current, depends strongly on the initial position of the magnetic axis. When the axis was moved by the vertical field inside the torus, the finite-β shift became smaller. Complete suppression of the finite-β plasma shift was achieved in a deeply inward shifted configuration: 7 cm from the standard position Raxis=2.20 m. This effect is explained by magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium theory for stellarator toroidal plasmas with a large magnetic hill and deep inward shift. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Transparent nanocrystalline diamond ceramics, consisting of a few nanometer-sized diamond crystallites that are unstable in themselves because of higher surface energy, were fabricated successfully from C60 fullerene using a shock compression and rapid quenching technique. The platelets were transparent and very hard, nearly comparable to type IIa diamond. Transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy revealed that individual crystallites had combined directly or through a very thin and modified sp3 carbon layer, which possibly stabilized the nanometer-sized crystallites. The size order and sp3 configuration of the nanotexture caused the transparency and hardness of the present material. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Baking (Pb, La)(Zr, Ti)O3 capacitors in a hydrogen atmosphere causes a significant loss of remanent polarization even at 150 °C. The hysteresis variations depend on the polarization states during baking. The hysteresis loop showed voltage shifts when the capacitor was polarized before baking, whereas it became a cramped shape when the baking was carried out on a virgin capacitor. Although remanent polarization diminished in all cases, saturation polarization was not suppressed. The clamped hysteresis loop can be described as an average of two loops shifted to positive and negative voltages. The results indicate that the loss of remanent polarization is not due to the suppression of switching, but due to the shift of the hysteresis of each domain larger than the coercive voltage. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We analyzed optically pumped surface emissions by calculating the optical gain in bulk GaN. We found that GaN has a large gain of over 104 cm−1 and no gain saturation up to 25 000 cm−1 . This high optical gain is generated by the high joint-density of states due to the three valence bands close to band edge and the large effective mass of the conduction band. As a result, although the gain required for lasing in the vertical direction is very high, the high excitation of carriers can achieve this without an intentional high reflection structure. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Interleukin-8 (IL-8) has been shown to be a chemotactic factor for neutrophils, T-lymphocytes and eosinophils, but it is unknown whether the IL-8-induced inflammatory cell accumulation into the airways can cause the bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) characteristic of asthma. IL-8 at a dose of 0.5 or 5μg/kg was administered intranasally to guinea-pigs twice a week for 3 weeks. One day after the last administration, animals were anesthetized and artificially ventilated through tracheal cannula and lateral pressure at the cannula (Pao) was measured as an overall index of airway responses to increasing concentrations of inhaled histamine (25, 50, 100, and 200 μg/ml). The IL-8 treatment significantly enhanced bronchial responsiveness to histamine in a dose-dependent manner (ANOVA P 〈 0.01). The provocative concentration of histamine causing a 100% increase in Pao (PC100) at a dose of 0.5 and 5μg/kg of IL-8 was 68.1 (Gsem 1.12) and 35.6 (Gsem 1.25) μg/ml, respectively. The latter was significantly (P 〈 0.01) lower than that in control animals treated with PBS (93.3 [Gsem, 1.14] μg/ml)- The IL-8 treatment also induced a significant influx of neutrophils, but not eosinophils, in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid (18.3 ± 8.8 and 30.6 ± 8.3% in animals treated with 0.5 and 5 μg/kg, respectively, of IL-8 vs 3.6 ± 0.7% in phosphate buffered saline-(PBS)-treated animals). Furthermore, we examined the effect of the thromboxane receptor antagonist S-1452 (0.01 or 0.1 mg/kg, i.p. 24 and 1 h before anesthesia) on this IL-8 induced BHR. S-1452 significantly inhibited the BHR dose-dependently (ANOVA P 〈 0.001). PC100 was 94.0 (Gsem 1.19), 137.4 (Gsem 1.17) and 43.0 (Gsem 1.24) μg/ml with S-1452 at doses of 0.01 and 0.1mg/ml and saline, respectively. We conclude that IL-8 causes BHR and airway neutrophil inflammation, and that thromboxane A2 is important in the development of BHR induced by IL-8.

    Notizen: Abstract A 3-oxo-Δ4-steroid 5β-reductase (5β-reductase) deficiency is difficult to diagnose because severe liver damage can result in a similar pattern of metabolite excretion. We investigated the usefulness of immunoblot analysis for diagnosis of 5β-reductase deficiency and quantitatively analysed urinary bile acids by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in a 5-month-old Japanese boy with severe neonatal cholestasis associated with hypertyrosinaemia. A liver sample was examined by immunoblot analysis using monoclonal antibodies against 5β-reductase. Urinary 3-oxo-Δ4 bile acids accounted for 88.3% of total bile acids, 5α-bile acids for 0.9%, and primary bile acids for 9.1%. Immunoblot analysis of the liver tissue showed an indistinct band of 5β-reductase. Conclusions These findings suggest that this patient had a secondary 5β-reductase deficiency due to severe liver damage, even though 3-oxo-Δ4 bile acids constituted more than 70% of total urinary bile acids. However, the patient may possibly have had an inherited 5β-reductase deficiency.

    Notizen: Abstract The effects of NO3 – and BAP on organogenesis in shoot primordia of Utricularia praelonga subcultured in B5 liquid medium were studied. In B5 liquid basal medium supplemented with 24.73 mM KNO3 and 2.0 mg/l BAP the subcultured shoot primordia continuously multiplied into numerous small, globular masses, while with dilution of the KNO3 to 3 mM organogenesis was promoted. Pulse treatment of the shoot primordia with 3 mM KNO3 in B5 liquid medium for 72 h and then transplantation to the B5 basal liquid-medium induced meristemoids in this tissue. When the shoot primordia regenerated meristemoids, they never reverted back into the proliferation cycle. The addition of BAP in the B5 liquid medium with 3 mM KNO3 regulated the differentiation rate of the stems and leaves in the meristemoids induced in the masses of shoot primordia. The control produced 3 parts stems to 1 part leaves; medium with 0.02 mg/l BAP regenerated approximately 2 parts stems and 1 part leaves; that of 0.20 mg/l BAP 1 part stems and 2 parts leaves; and medium with 2.00 mg/l BAP regenerated leaves only.

    Notizen: Abstract Spectrally narrow, pulsed outputs consisting of almost a single mode have been obtained from an optically-pumped high-power (200kW) D2O laser by adopting the injection seeding method, where single-mode radiation (seed pulse) from a low-power, compact D2O laser has been injected into the main D2O laser. Spectrally narrow outputs with high power having spectral widths as narrow as 5 MHz have been obtained, when the seed pulses with frequency tuned to one longitudinal mode of the main D2O laser have been injected at a time sufficiently before the lasing of the main laser took place. The experimental results have been compared with those of numerical simulation modified to include the injection field with varying injection times.
